Terror Slip Past Garnet 5-3
Green Terror junior forward Caitlin Potter (Doylestown, PA / Central Bucks West) scored twice as McDaniel defeated Swarthmore 5-3 in Centennial action on a rainy Friday night on Clothier Field. The Green Terror improve to 8-5 overall and 4-2 in the Centennial and the Garnet fall to 6-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
The Green Terror drew first blood 11:57 into the first half. Potter re-directed a blast from freshman midfielder Brook Dixon ( Clayton, DE / Smyrna) to give McDaniel the early 1-0 lead.
Swarthmore answered with an Abbie Fischer '08 ( Sudbury, MA / Lincoln-Sudbury) goal at 17:28 to even the score 1-1. Forward Heidi Fieselmann '06 ( Bridgewater, NJ / Bridgewater Regional) possessed the ball on the left post and dropped a pass back to the right side. Fischer controlled the pass and flicked a shot past McDaniel goalie Erika Wawzyanick ( Wantage, NJ / High Point Regional). The contest remained tied into the intermission, with the Green Terror leading 6-4 in the shot category.
McDaniel took back the lead early in the second half, scoring four times in the span of 14 minutes. Junior defender Colleen Nugent ( Lancaster, PA / Lampeter Stras.) scored at 38:42 followed by senior forward Dani Unflat (Bear, DE / William Penn) with the eventual game-winner at 38:42. Unflat's goal was her eighth of the season, a team-high.
McDaniel senior midfielder Laura Bagley (Westhampton, NJ / Rancocas Valley) scored at 46:26 and Potter followed with her second goal, re-directing another bullet off Dixon's stick at 48:48.
The Garnet came right back down the field to score. Midfielder Jessica Larson '06 ( Lincolnshire, IL / Stevenson) slammed home her firstgoal of the season at 49:06 to cut the McDaniel lead to 5-2. Fieselmann notched her team-leading 11 th score at 66:25, tipping in a shot from forward Lindsay Roth '07 ( Severna Park, MD / Severn) to complete the scoring.
Wawazyanick made five saves in goal for the Green Terror while junior Karen Lorang ( San Diego, CA / University) recorded three stops for the Garnet.
Swarthmore will travel to Gywnedd-Mercy College for their next game, a 4:00 p.m. contest on Thursday, October 20.
