2006 Seven Sisters Field Hockey Championship



Swarthmore, PA -   Wellesley (3-1) advanced to the championship game of the 23rd annual Seven Sisters Field Hockey Championship for a record 14th time by defeating Mount Holyoke 3-0 in second-round action at Clothier Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  The Blue will meet Wheaton (Ma.), victors over Smith 6-2 in the other semifinal, at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 17 at Clothier Stadium.

First Round

Wheaton 3, Swarthmore 2

Swarthmore College (3-1) suffered its first loss to Wheaton College (5-1) 3-2 in the opening round of Seven Sisters play.  Despite outshooting Wheaton 17 to 10 and a seven save effort by senior captain Karen Lorang, the Lyons earned their fifth victory courtesy of freshman Alex Clock who tapped in the game-winner with 6:25 left in the game.  Senior captain Summer Spicer scored her first goal of the season just 49 seconds into the game for the Garnet.  Also scoring for Swarthmore was sophomore standout Ashley Gunter.  Sara Dimick and Lauren Henderson each added a goal for Wheaton, and goalie Mary Catherine Boll came up with eight saves to seal the victory.  Wheaton advances to the second round to face Smith College.

Wellesley 3, Bryn Mawr 0

In the first round action of the 2006 Seven Sisters Field Hockey Tournament, Wellesley College (2-1) peppered Bryn Mawr College (1-3) with 19 shots on their way to a 3-0 victory.  Beth Kelly opened up the scoring at 6:54, and Katie Sang added a tally at the 10:19 mark.  Both goals were assisted by senior captain Jen Shrull.  Catherine Marchetta scored the third and final goal for Wellesley with just over ten minutes left in the second half.  Caitlin Evans made four saves for the Owls, and Rachel Brady added 12 saves, not allowing any goals in the second half.  Wellesley now moves on to play Mount Holyoke in the second round.

Mount Holyoke 3, Haverford 2 (OT)

Also in the first round, Mount Holyoke (2-0) came from behind to steal a victory from the Fords of Haverford College (1-2).  With all zeros showing on the clock, Jaimie Macari scored the tying goal to send the game into overtime.  Macari struck again 4:17 inot the first overtime, scoring the unassisted game-winner.  Haverford's Sarah Walker and Abby Scattergood each added second-half goals, but it wasn't enough to lift the Fords over the Lyons.  Mount Holyoke netminder Allie Walsh made 24 saves, and Haverford's freshman goalie Grace Bundens put up 13 saves in the losing effort.  Mount Holyoke will face Wellesely in the second round.

Senior forward Linnea Michaels scored off of a Rebecca Capute rebound to send the Pioneers of Smith College (1-2) into the second round of the 2006 Seven Sisters Championship.  Vassar (3-2) fought hard through more than 80 minutes of action with Brewers' goalies Taylor Herman turning away seven overtime shots and Ellie Pomerantz registering three saves.  Margaret Winter earned the shutout for Smith with 10 saves.  Smith will advance to meet Wheaton College in the second round.

Wellesley College (3-1) advanced to the championship game of the 2006 Seven Sisters Tournament by blanking Mount Holyoke (2-1) 3-0 in their second-round game.  Beth Kelley scored the lone first-half goal for the Blue on an cross from Kaite Sang.  Late in the second half the Parzych sisters teamed up to seal the deal for Wellesley, and Lydia Parzych added a third insurance goal as the clock wound down.  Allie Walsh made seven saves for Mount Holyoke, and Emily Hewitt made two saves on her way to her second shutout of the day.

The Wheaton Lyons (7-1)  kept their momentum going in the afternoon, getting a pair of early scores from junior forward Lyndsie Ryalls and two assists and a score from junior forward Sara Dimick on the way to 6-2 victory over Smith.  The Pioneers (1-3) got a pair of goals from midfielder Rebecca Capute while goalie Margaret Winter made 10 saves.

Haverford 2, Bryn Mawr 0

In an early match-up of Centennial Conference foes, Haverford (2-2) scored two second half goals to down the Owls of Bryn Mawr College (1-4) 2-0.  Sarah Walker and Colleen Farrel each scored a goal for the Fords with assists from Abby Scattergood and Jenn Chu, respectively.  Bryn Mawr could only muster two shots on Haverford goalie Rachel Brady, who earned the shutout on a single save.  Haverford will play the winner of the Swarthmore-Vassar game, potentially setting up another early match-up of bitter cross-town rivals.

Swarthmore 2, Vassar 1  2OT

The Garnet (4-1) got back on the winning track, getting a game-winning goal from sophomore Ashley Gunter in the second overtime to defeat Vassar 2-1 in second round play.  Swarthmore got an early score from junior forward Abigail Fischer, her fifth of the season, at 11:22 to assume the early lead on Cunningham Field.  The Brewers answered with a score from Catherine Twardy four minutes later.   The contest remained knotted for another 77 minutes before Gunter put the Garnet into the fifth-place game with Haverford by notching her fifth score of the season in the second overtime.
