2006 Garnet Volleyball Classic
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Five teams kicked off the fourth annual Garnet Classic on Friday afternoon held at Swarthmore College. The University of Redlands (CA) Bulldogs and the Scarlet Raiders from Rutgers-Newark each took home two matches in the first day of competition.
Redlands 3, Swarthmore 0
Redlands senior libero Rachea' Bell amassed 25 digs while senior setter Jessica Walker aided the offensive with 31 assists and three service aces as the Bulldogs took home the win in three straight sets 30-21, 30-28, 30-22. Bulldogs senior middle blocker Lizzy Ford amassed a team-high nine kills while junior outside hitter Lori Nakamura added seven kills for Redlands (5-1). Swarthmore outside hitter Jen Wang '09 led the Garnet with nine kills, 11 digs, and two service aces. Sophomore libero Erin Heaney held up Swarthmore's defensive end, digging out 15 balls while junior captain Katherine Gold had a team-high five blocks.
Rutgers-Newark 3, Cabrini 0
The Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders faced off against the Cabrini Lady Cavaliers, winning in three close sets by scores of 34-32, 30-24, 30-26. Junior hitter Julie Pape and senior hitter Jennifer Snyder lead the Rutgers' offensive with 10 and nine kills, respectively. The Cabrini defense was led by freshman right side Lindsay Martin who dug out 11 balls. Sophomore setter Michelle Mola made a solid contribution with seven digs and six serving aces. The Scarlet Raiders were too much for the Lady Cavaliers - junior Rutgers-Newark setter Nazly Hasanizadeh assisting 30 times, and freshman outside hitter Katlyn Lewis and Pape each serving out four aces.
Redlands 3, Cabrini 0
The Redlands Bulldogs blazed through their second match, besting Cabrini College's Lady Cavaliers 3-0 by scores of 30-16, 30-17, 30-13. Bell and Walker played well again, boasting 19 digs and 15 assists, respectively. Leading the team with five aces, Bell managed to help her team snatch up their fifth victory of the season. Redlands freshmen Kelina Smith and Jackie Beeton dished out a combined 14 kills while Cabrini's Amanda Murphy and Alecia Weaver combined effort produced seven kills.
Rutgers-Newark 3, Kings Point 0
The Scarlet Raiders (10-2) brought home a second victory, this time against the Kings Point Mariners - claiming the win in three straight sets, 30-15, 30-14, 30-15. Rutgers-Newark setter Nazly Hasanizadeh handed out 30 assists to bring her total to 60 for the night. Scarlet Raiders freshman middle hitter Rachel Guyt and freshman Katlyn Lewis each tallied eight kills and Lewis also dug out seven balls. Mariner Jessica Familette '09 totaled nine digs and six kills while freshman outside hitter Patricia Greene added four kills, senior blocker Maria Olson contribute eight digs, and sophomore right side Clea Vragel with totaled 10 assists.
Swarthmore 3, Kings Point 0
The Garnet (5-3) defeated the Mariners 3-0 in the final match of day one by scores of 30-8, 31-29, 30-15. Swarthmore was led by Gold (seven kills) and junior opposite hitter Vanessa Wells (six kills) on the offensive end. Freshman setter Kearney Bangs contributed 14 assists while classmate Monica Joshi added seven assists and a career-best six aces. Swarthmore junior middle blocker Karen Berk topped all defenders with eight blocks in the match. Kings Point (3-5) was led by sophomore Clea Vragel, who handed out 11 assists, posted seven digs, and recorded five aces.
In the 10:00 a.m game on Saturday morning, the Garnet will take on Cabrini while Redlands faces off against Kings Point. The 12:00 p.m. matches will feature Cabrini versus Kings Point on Court 1 and Redlands against Rutgers-Newark on Court 2. The Garnet Classic will conclude with a rubber-match between Swarthmore and Rutgers-Newark - the two schools have faced each other the previous two weekend with the Scarlet Knights winning 3-0 at the Greyhound Premiere Invitational on Sept. 2 and the Garnet exacting revenge in Newark with a 3-2 win.
