Garnet Women’s Soccer Freshmen Honored
Swarthmore, PA—Swarthmore College women's soccer freshmen Katie Kanuka (Oakville, Ontario / Holy Trinity Catholic) and Eileen Earl (Redmond, WA / Inglemoor) were named Centennial Conference Players of the Week for the week of September 17. Kanuka was selected as CC Offensive Player of the Week and Earl was named CC Defensive Player of the Week.
Kanuka scored a pair of game-winning goals in two victories for the Garnet this past week. The freshman forward weaved through three defenders to score the opening goal in Swarthmore's 4-0 win over Philadelphia Bible on Sept. 12 and then posted two more scores in a 2-0 Garnet victory at Franklin & Marshall in the Centennial Conference opener on Sept. 16. Kanuka leads the team with six goals in 2006, including four game-winners.
Earl, a defender, played a strong right side helping the Garnet defense shut out two more opponents this week. Swarthmore has not been scored upon in the last 303:31, the longest such streak since 2001 when the Garnet began the season with five consecutive shutouts (a streak of 486:45).
The Swarthmore women's soccer team has earned five weekly honors this season - sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Walker was selected as Centennial Defensive Player of the Week and E.C.A.C. Goalkeeper of the Week on Sept. 11 and Kanuka was placed on the D3Kicks.com Team of the Week on Sept. 5.
Swarthmore has an overall record of 4-0-1 overall, including a 1-0 Centennial mark.
