GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE. Pa. - Swarthmore junior Brandon Washington had a goal and an assist and classmate Michael Bonesteel notched his second goal leading the Garnet men's soccer team to victory over the visiting Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham (FDU) Devils 2-1 on a soggy Clothier Field Wednesday night.

The start of the game was delayed by just over an hour after heavy traffic on the New Jersey Turnpike delayed FDU's arrival.  Heavy rain ended just before the eventual 8:05 start time.

Bonesteel put the Garnet (8-3) got on the board with 1:04 remaining in the first half.  The junior midfielder took a pass from Washington on the right wing near the edge of the box and lofted the ball just over the head of FDU goalkeeper Jared Drucker and into the upper right corner of the net.

Swarthmore held a 5-2 lead in shots at the half and generally was able to keep the ball away from freshman goalkeeper Zach Weimar, who made one save in the period.

Washington was on the finishing end of Swarthmore's second goal, which came just 5:58 into the second period.  Sophomore Stu Leon passed the ball up-field to classmate Ladule Lako lo Sarah, who touched it through to Washington.  The junior broke past the Devil defensive line, ran onto the ball, and shot it just past Drucker (who had come out the net), banking the ball off the post and into the back of the net.  The goal is Washington's first of the season.

FDU (3-9-1) cut the lead to one at 55:15 on an Alex Malcolm header.  The ball came bouncing towards the goal and Malcolm rose high and put the ball just over the outstretched hands of Weimar.

Swarthmore controlled play down the stretch, denying the Devils any hopes of a comeback.  Junior midfielder Andrew Macurdy was active off the bench, hitting four shots and putting two on goal.

Weimar finished the match with two saves while improving to 4-1 on the year.  Drucker made six stops for the visitors.  Swathmore finished the match with a 16-6 shot advantage.

Swarthmore resumes its Centennial Conference schedule this Saturday, Oct. 14, travelling to 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins for a 4:00 p.m. game.

Bryn Mawr retook the lead, 3-2 at 56:04 when Wallis Romzek fed Caitlyn Clark for her first score of the season.

The Garnet (8-3-1 overall, 4-3 Centennial) rose to the challenge as the rain intensified.  Kanuka knotted the match at 3-3, finishing off a corner kick from senior forward Natalie Negrey at 81:25.

The game appeared to be headed for extra time until Kanuka completed her hat-trick with the game-winner at 88:32.  Kanuka got loose on a breakaway and beat the Owls' goalkeeper to the side for her 13th score of the season.

Swarthmore held a 22-11 shot advantage, including an efficient 14 shots on goal.  Garnet goalkeeper Anna de Regt '09 made six saves, while Bryn Mawr's Collette Pullion stopped ten shots.

Kanuka's hat trick is the first by a Garnet woman since Negrey accomplished the feat against Washington (Md.) on Oct. 4, 2003.  Kanuka now has a Centennial-leading 13 goals on the season, just six shy of the school record of 19 set by Kristen Tucker '90 in 1987..

Second-Half Surge Sends Garnet Past Mules 2-0

October 8th, 2006

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore got second-half goals from sophomore Yoi Tibbetts and junior Michael Bonesteel and three saves from junior goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe as the Garnet (7-3-1, 3-2 CC) took care of the Muhlenberg Mules (5-2-2, 2-2-1 CC) 2-0 on a cool Saturday evening at Clothier Stadium.

The first half saw 11 total shots but few good scoring opportunities.  Tibbetts nearly put the Garnet on the board midway through the period but an offsides call nullified the goal.

Swarthmore finally got on the board with 36:20 left in the second half.  The ball came into the box to Garnet forward Stu Leon '09, who was readying a shot when a Mule defender knocked the ball away.  Unfortunately for the Mules, the ball came right out to Tibbetts, who wasted no time in slamming it home."

The intensity mounted after the goal and, as the referees let the teams play, players from both squads complained about some of the no-calls.  Although Sutcliffe was rarely challenged, defender Darren Johnson '08 came on and blocked a shot by Mule midfielder Jonathan Kliewer in which he stood with one foot inside the goal but caught the ball in front of the endline.

Finally, with 3:40 to play, Bonesteel put the Mules away for the good.  The junior played give-and-go with freshman Andres Freire, who made a pretty backwards pass to Bonesteel, who bent the ball just under the crossbar for his first goal of the season.

The Garnet held a 10-9 shot advantage on the evening.  Sutcliffe and Mule netminder Peter Bennett made three saves a piece.

The win gets the Garnet a measure of revenge over the Mules, who defeated Swarthmore twice last season and eliminated them from the Centennial Conference playoffs.

Swarthmore steps out of conference play for Wednesday night's match with FDU-Florham.  Gametime at Clothier Stadium is 7:00 p.m.

Roth gave the Garnet an early 1-0 lead, taking a pass upfield from midfielder Summer Spicer '07 and beating the goalkeeper with 20:20 left in the first half.  The hosts tied the score eight and a half minutes later when, after a penalty corner, Rachel Miller deflected a Molly Gavin shot past Garnet goalkeeper Karen Lorang '07.  The score remained knotted at one heading into halftime.

Swarthmore retook the lead just 2:31 into the second session when Gunter deflected home a Morrison pass.  But that wrapped up the scoring for the Garnet, as Washington netminder Elena Nicholoff came up big with seven second-half saves (12 in the game).  The hosts tied the game with 17:31 to play on an Amanda Garbart home and got the game-winner from Megan Rainey, who banged a loose ball home with 5:57 remaining.
