Shorewomen Topple Swarthmore 3-2
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Washington College Shorewomen (1-9, 1-4 CC) erased Swarthmore's second-half lead with consecutive goals and went on to defeat the Garnet 3-2. Senior Lindsay Roth and sophomore Ashley Gunter scored for Swarthmore (8-4, 3-2 CC).
Roth gave the Garnet an early 1-0 lead, taking a pass upfield from midfielder Summer Spicer '07 and beating the goalkeeper with 20:20 left in the first half. The hosts tied the score eight and a half minutes later when, after a penalty corner, Rachel Miller deflected a Molly Gavin shot past Garnet goalkeeper Karen Lorang '07. The score remained knotted at one heading into halftime.
Swarthmore retook the lead just 2:31 into the second session when Gunter deflected home a Morrison pass. But that wrapped up the scoring for the Garnet, as Washington netminder Elena Nicholoff came up big with seven second-half saves (12 in the game). The hosts tied the game with 17:31 to play on an Amanda Garbart home and got the game-winner from Megan Rainey, who banged a loose ball home with 5:57 remaining.
The Garnet outshot the hosts 18-9 and took 17 penalty corners to Washington's five. Lorang made four saves on the afternoon.
Gunter's goal ties her with junior Abigail Fischer for the team lead; both are tied for second in the Centennial Conference.
Swarthmore will look to rebound on Wednesday, Oct. 10 when conference foe Ursinus comes to Clothier Field for a 7:00 p.m. contest. The Bears are undefeated in conference play (6-0) and are ranked #6 in the country in Division III.
