Spicer Named Centennial Offensive Player of the Week
Lancaster, PA - Swarthmore College field hockey senior Summer Spicer (Laurel, DE / Laurel) was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week.
Spicer, an art and psychology major, had two goals and two assists, including game-winning goal with 1:00 left in the first overtime leading the Garnet to a 3-2 upset victory over 19th-ranked Johns Hopkins on Oct. 3. Spicer's first shot at 1:27 was tipped in by teammate Abigail Fischer and then she handed Swarthmore the lead again just before the half with a blast from the top of the circle off a penalty corner. Spicer's game-winner in overtime also came off a penalty corner - the senior side-stepped a charging Blue Jay defender and let loose a rocket into the left side of the cage at 89:00. It was the first game-winner of the season for Spicer (third of her career) and her fourth goal of 2006. Spicer also added an assist on Swarthmore's first goal in a 3-2 defeat at Washington on Oct. 7.
Spicer, an All-Centennial selection in 2005, has four goals and four assists this season. She is the second Swarthmore field hockey player to receive a weekly honor from the conference - goalie Karen Lorang was named Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5 and Oct. 4.
Swarthmore has an overall record of 8-4 this season, including a 3-2 Centennial mark.
