Bullets Gun Down Garnet

Mark Rohde '07 posted a double-double with a season-high 11 points and a career-high 10 rebounds to lead three Garnet players in double-figures but Swarthmore (2-12, 1-6) fell to Gettysburg (8-6, 5-2) 57-51 in Centennial Conference action at Tarble Pavilion. David Glaser led the Bullets with a game-high 16 points and Matt Whelan added 15.

Gettysburg jumped out to a 35-25 halftime lead and built a 50-35 advantage with 12:22 remaining in the game. The Garnet did not quit as the defense held the Bullets scoreless for an 8:17 stretch to get back into the game. Swarthmore used a 16-5 run to close to within 55-51 on a Rohde jumper with 14 seconds left.

Ryan Page then hit two free throws with 10 seconds left to ice the game for Gettysburg.

A tough double-team by the Bullet defense held Matt Gustafson '05 to just nine points in the game. The senior has 1,549 points and is now 15 shy of passing Scott Gibbons '92 as Swarthmore men's basketball's all-time leading scorer.

Ian McCormick '08 and Dillon McGrew '07 each added 10 points for the Garnet.

The Garnet travel to Muhlenberg on Wednesday for an 8:00 p.m. Centennial Conference contest.

Hobbs Sets New Mile Mark

It didn't take long for Swarthmore's newest indoor track record to fall as Sarah Hobbs' 06 ran 5:16.73 in the mile at the NYU Invitational to best Carrie Ritter's time of 5:17.4 set last month at a meet in Boston.

NYC Collegiate at NY Armory

The Distance Medley Relay team of Ross Weller, Vernon Chaplin, Tyler Lyson and Eric Sweigard finished in sixth place in a time of 10:52.79 to pace the Garnet at the NYC Collegiate Meet at the New York Armory.

 

Berk, Tide Spook Owls

Karen Berk '08 scored a career-high 14 points while Jen Stevenson '06 and Ali Wolff '05 added nine points apiece to lead Swarthmore to a 64-32 victory over Bryn Mawr in Tarble Pavilion on Thursday night.

Swarthmore held a 12-10 lead with 7:56 remaining in the first half when Stevenson banked in a three-pointer to push the lead to five. Debra Farrelly '06 knocked down a jumper off a feed from Ashley Brandt '07 and Kristen Lee '05 hit a jumper of her own to finish off the quick 7-0 run for a 19-10 Swarthmore lead.

The Garnet, on the strength of five points from Berk, ended the half on a 13-6 run. Erica Lukoski '08 gave Swarthmore a 30-16 lead at intermission by scoring two of her career-high five points on an elbow jumper with 27 seconds left.

Radiance Walters '06 ignited the Garnet offensive attack at the start of the second half, assisting on a Lee lay-up and scoring all of her six points to push the Swarthmore lead to 38-19 with 15:54 remaining.

Amy Johnson scored two of her game-high 17 points to end the Garnet run only to see Swarthmore rattle off 14 unanswered points, pushing the lead to 53-23.

The Garnet scoring consisted of two Stevenson three-pointers, a pair of free throws from Laura Popovics '08, and three buckets from Berk.

Johnson nailed a three-pointer from three feet beyond the arc to end the Bryn Mawr drought. Berk answered with a lay-up, Lukoski sank her first career three-pointer, and Kristen Traband '08 sank two free throws to give Swarthmore a 60-32 lead, their largest of the night.

The Garnet got a career-high nine rebounds from Cara Tigue, making her the first start of her Swarthmore career. The Garnet also got a career-highs in boards from Lee (eight) and Brandt (four)

Swarthmore (6-6, 3-4 CC) lowered their conference-leading scoring defense to 49.1 points allowed per game, good for 13th in the nation. The Garnet held a 55-31 advantage on the boards, increasing their season rebounding margin to 9.8, tops in the Centennial Conference and 11th in Division III.

Up next for Swarthmore will be the Bullets from Gettysburg College. The two squads will square off in Tarble Pavilion at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 15th.

Dips Outlast Tide

Dana Johns scored a game-high 21 points and recorded seven steals to lead Franklin & Marshall to a 57-45 victory over Swarthmore in Lancaster, Pa. on Tuesday night.

Johns helped the Diplomats take a 30-23 halftime lead by sinking two of F&M's five first-half three-pointers. The senior point guard led the Diplomats in applying pressure to the Garnet backcourt, forcing 15 Swarthmore turnovers.

The second half opened with the Garnet using a 13-5 run to get back into the contest. Karen Berk '08 gave the Garnet their only lead of the night by sinking a 15-foot jump shot with 12:20 remaining in the game.

F&M (4-8, 3-4 CC) answered with a run of their own, using the next ten minutes to build a 47-42 lead. The Garnet were unable to answer on consecutive possessions, and the Diplomats sank multiple free throws to ice the game.

Jessica Fuhr '07 led Swarthmore with ten points and five rebounds, while Ali Wolff '05 added nine points and five boards. Berk, in her first collegiate start, had a team-high nine rebounds as the Garnet fell to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the Centennial Conference.

Swarthmore welcomes cross-town rival Bryn Mawr to Tarble Pavilion on Thursday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Garnet Tops Terror to Snap 10-Game Skid

Ian McCormick '08 and Matt Gustafson '05 provided the one-two punch to lead the Garnet (2-10, 1-4 CC) to a 65-62 Centennial Conference victory over McDaniel (3-9, 1-4) at Tarble Pavilion. The victory snaps Swarthmore's 10-game losing skid.

McCormick recorded his first career double-double with 25 points and a career-high 10 rebounds while Gustafson inched closer to becoming the school's all-time leading scorer with 16 points and 12 rebounds. The senior captain needs 32 more points to take the top spot on the Swarthmore scoring leaderboard.

The two squads battled from the start as there were six ties and five lead changes in the first half. The Terror held its largest lead of six at the break as Chris Rutland hit a shot to beat the buzzer giving them a 32-26 advantage at the break.

The Garnet used the long ball to get back into the game as three pointers from Dillon McGrew '07 (2), McCormick, and Matt Kurman '08 sparked an 18-3 run to start the second half, giving the Tide a 44-35 lead with 14:00 remaining.

McDaniel pounded the offensive glass to whittle away at the Garnet lead closing to within 59-58 on a Jemar Daniel put-back at 3:59. Daniel paced McDaniel with seven of the Terror's 28 offensive rebounds.

Gustafson converted two free throws with 1:49 left to give the Garnet a 61-58 lead. Josh McKay countered with a bucket with 1:30 remaining to close the gap to one again. A McCormick layup at 0:56 gave the Tide a 63-60 lead before McKay hit two free throws with 28.9 seconds remaining.

Kurman connected on two free throws with 19 seconds left to give the Garnet the final margin of victory, 65-62.

McCormick could have iced the game with 5 seconds left but missed two free throws. After a Green Terror timeout, Sean McNeely took the inbounds pass, dribbled to the top of the key and launched a three-pointer at the buzzer that rattled off the rim giving the Garnet its first victory since a season opening victory over Connecticut College on November 19.

Kyle O'Connor led the Terror with 13 points, Daniel finished with 12 points and eight rebounds and McKay added 11 points and nine boards. McGrew came of the Garnet bench to contribute 11 points, connectiong on three 3-pointers.

Swarthmore travels to Franklin & Marshall on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. Centennial matchup.

Devils Break Garnet Heart

Patrice Johnson tied the game with a three-pointer from the corner and Megan Shelley sank two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to send Dickinson to a 54-52 victory at Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils used a 8-2 run early in the first half to jump out to a 18-10 lead. Swarthmore chipped away at the lead, finally tying the contest at 23-23 following a three-pointer from Jessica Fuhr '07. Dickinson used a 7-2 run to end the half, leading 30-25.

Karen Berk '08 finished off a feed from Debra Farrelly '06 at 9:03 to give the Garnet a 45-38 lead, their largest of the afternoon. The Devils ran off seven straight points, knotting the game on short jumper by Jessica Howard at 7:37.

Allyson Teatom put Dickinson up by a bucket at 5:46 and then Radiance Walters '06 hit a pair of free throws to tie the score at 49-49.

Teatom missed the front of a one-and-one and Swarthmore took the lead on a lay up by Walters at 2:38. The Garnet forced a turnover and were able to get the ball back inside to Walters. The junior forward put up a shot and got her own rebound, drawing a foul with 55 seconds to go, forcing Dickinson to take a time-out.

Walters sank the first one to give Swarthmore a three-point advantage. The Red Devils rebounded the Walters on the second free throw and pushed the ball up the floor. Dickinson worked the ball around and found Johnson in the corner with time running down on the shot clock. The junior calmly sank her second trey of the game to tie the score at 52.

On the ensuing Garnet possession, the Devils stepped up their pressure and Shelley stepped in front of a Jen Stevenson '06 pass. The senior took the ball the length of the floor and got fouled with 15 seconds remaining.

Shelley sank both shots and the Devils were able to get a piece of senior Alison Wolff's lay-up, sending Dickinson (8-1, 4-1 CC) to victory.

Teatom and Shelley both scored a game-high 15 points while Johnson chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Wolff led Swarthmore (5-5, 2-3 CC) with 13 points, while Walters scored eight points and nine rebounds. Berk came off the bench to score eight points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Garnet travel to Lancaster, Pa. on Tuesday afternoon, when they face Franklin & Marshall in a Centennial Conference match-up at 6:00 p.m.

Red Devils Slip By Garnet

Ian McCormick '08 scored a career-high 27 points but the Garnet fell for the 10th consecutive game, dropping an 86-76 Centennial Conference decision at Dickinson.

McCormick hit 9-of-10 attempts and was 9-of-12 from the line to lead both teams in scoring. The first-year center also pulled down seven rebounds and had three blocked shots.

Swarthmore led 34-33 at the half, extending the lead to six with 10:14 remaining in the game. The Red Devils used a late 19-5 run to pull away from the Garnet.

Matt Gustafson '05 scored 25 points and pulled downsix boards, Matt Kurman '08 chipped in with 15 points and five assists, and Mark Rohde '07 pulled down a career best nine rebounds.

Gustafson moved into second place on the career scoring list with 1,516 points and needs just 48 more to become the College's all-time leading scorer.

Jon Skvarka led Dickinson with 19 points and nine rebounds.

The Garnet fall to 1-10 overall, 0-4 in the Centennial while the Devils move to 6-5, 3-1.

Swarthmore hosts McDaniel on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.

Shoremen Turn Back Tide

Matt Gustafson '05 scored a game-high 18 points and Ian McCormick '08 chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds but the Garnet fell for the ninth consecutive game in an 81-66 Centennial Conference loss at Washington.

Swarthmore scored the first five points of the second half to take a 39-38 advantage but then it was all Shoremen as Washington used a 32-7 run, scoring 20 straight, to blow open the game 70-46. Swarthmore used a 14-0 run late in the game to close to 77-66 with 1:32 remaining but could not get any closer.

For the game, Washington shot 50% hitting 30 of 60 attempts from the floor. It was the third consecutive contest a Garnet opponent shot better than 50%.

Washington used a balance scoring attack as six players reached double figures led by Joe Breslin's 14 points.

The Garnet struggled from the floor in the second half hitting just 9 of 31 attempts and just 1 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Spencer Gray '08 scored a career-high eight points and Brandon Luzar '05, Chris Nana-Sinkam '08 and Steve Wolf '08 also posted career bests with four points each.

The Garnet fall to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial while Washington moves to 5-5, 2-1. Swarthmore travels to Dickinson on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. conference game.

Tide Wash Away Shorewomen

Radiance Walters '06 collected her sixth double-double of the season as Swarthmore benefitted from a large rebounding advantage to defeat Washington College (Md.) 74-51 on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action.

The Garnet took a 13-5 advantage following two free throws by Debra Farrelly '06 with 14:38 remaining in the first half. The Shorewomen fought back to tie the game at 18, knotting the score on a Regina Barrett three-pointer at the 8:23 mark.

The two squads traded the lead three more times before a Karen Berk '08 lay-up and a three-pointer by Jennifer Stevenson '06 gave Swarthmore a 29-24 lead with 2:33 to go in the half.

Barrett sank another trey a minute later, only to see Farrelly answer with a three-pointer of her own to push the Garnet lead back to five. Irene Pastorino converted a lay-up with two seconds remaining to cut the Swarthmore lead to 32-29 at half.

The Garnet came out of the locker room fired up, pouring a 31-6 run on Washington to take a comfortable 63-35 lead following a nifty lay-up by Laura Popovics with 8:59 left in the game.

Swarthmore (5-4, 2-2 CC) enjoyed a 51-24 advantage on the glass for the contest, including a season-high 23 offensive boards. The Garnet defense, tops in the Centennial Conference, put the clamps on the Shorewomen in the second half, giving up only six field goals and forcing 10 Washington turnovers.

Popovics contributed 12 points and four steals, while Farrelly added a season-high 11 points and five assists. Berk finished with 10 points, five boards, and two blocks while fellow front-court mate Alison Wolff '05 added eight points and seven boards. Cara Tigue '06 posted a career-high six points, while grabbing four rebounds and two assists in ten minutes of action.

Swarthmore returns to Tarble Pavilion on Saturday, January 8th when they host Centennial Conference rival Dickinson College in a 2:00 p.m. contest.
