Shoremen Turn Back Tide

Matt Gustafson '05 scored a game-high 18 points and Ian McCormick '08 chipped in 14 points and seven rebounds but the Garnet fell for the ninth consecutive game in an 81-66 Centennial Conference loss at Washington.

Swarthmore scored the first five points of the second half to take a 39-38 advantage but then it was all Shoremen as Washington used a 32-7 run, scoring 20 straight, to blow open the game 70-46. Swarthmore used a 14-0 run late in the game to close to 77-66 with 1:32 remaining but could not get any closer.

For the game, Washington shot 50% hitting 30 of 60 attempts from the floor. It was the third consecutive contest a Garnet opponent shot better than 50%.

Washington used a balance scoring attack as six players reached double figures led by Joe Breslin's 14 points.

The Garnet struggled from the floor in the second half hitting just 9 of 31 attempts and just 1 of 9 from beyond the arc.

Spencer Gray '08 scored a career-high eight points and Brandon Luzar '05, Chris Nana-Sinkam '08 and Steve Wolf '08 also posted career bests with four points each.

The Garnet fall to 1-9 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial while Washington moves to 5-5, 2-1. Swarthmore travels to Dickinson on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. conference game.
