Mintel Starts 2005 With a Bang, Garnet Drop a Pair
Mary Mintel '05 slammed the first pitch she saw in 2005 for a two-run home run, yet Garnet were unable to come away with a win, falling 5-3 to Concordia and 12-3 to Indiana Wesleyan in Orlando, FL.
Mintel, five double and one four-bagger in 2004, gave Swarthmore the early 2-0 advantage by drilling the first offering over the left-field fence.
Marianne Klingamann '07 took the loss for Swarthmore in the first game, going the distance before surrendering a game-winning two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning. Freshman Katie Gold cracked two hits in her collegiate debut for the Garnet.
Swarthmore run into a buzz saw in their afternoon contest, with Emily Remus '06 and Emily Walz '08 giving up six runs apiece. Mary Blair led the Garnet (0-2) with two hits and two RBIs.
The Swarthmore softball team play two more on Tuesday morning, facing Messiah at 8:50 a.m. and then squaring off against U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at 10:40 a.m.
