Garnet Drop Game in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS, Mo -- The University of Dallas shot a sizzling 57% from the field, downing Swarthmore 66-53 Saturday night in the consolation game of the 22nd
annual Lopata Classic on the campus of Washington University of St. Louis.

The Garnet (0-7) were led by sophomore forward Ian McCormick, an All-Tournament selection, who notched his second consecutive double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Sophomore guard Noam Fliegelman hit double figures for the second straight night with 10 points.

Swarthmore struggled at the onset of the game, shooting only 26% in the first half as Dallas ran out to a 27-20 lead at the intermission.

The Garnet cut the lead to three with a lay-up by McCormick and a jumper by Fliegelman at the start of the second half. Dallas responded with a 20-10
run to increase the lead to 47-34 with 11 minutes to go. Dallas nailed 16 out of 28 field goals in the second stanza, shooting 45% for the game.

This is the second All-Tournament selection of the season for McCormick; the sophomore earned honors at the Equinox Classic on Nov. 19.

Swarthmore resumes Centennial Conference play on Tuesday, Dec. 6, traveling to Muhlenberg for a 8:00 p.m. game.

Garnet Shooters Sink St. Joe’s at Seven Sisters

NORTHAMPTON, Ma. - Swarthmore (3-2, 1-1 CC) sank eight shots from behind the arc to roll past St. Joseph's (Ct.) 77-49 at the annual Seven Sisters
Championship on Friday evening on the campus of Smith College. Guard Debbie Farrelly '06 and wing Jessica Fuhr '07 led the Garnet with 13 points apiece
and senior forward Radiance Walters added her second double-double of the season.

Swarthmore will face Wellesley (Ma.) in the semi-finals on Saturday, Dec. 3 at 4:00 p.m.

The Garnet jumped out to a 14-0 lead to start the game, sinking six treys against a St. Joe's zone defense in the first half. Swarthmore entered the
locker room with a 41-22 advantage. The 41 points were the most score in the opening half by a Garnet squad this season.

Swarthmore's hot shooting continued in the second half as the Garnet hit for 42 % (13-31) from the floor. Ten Swarthmore players entered the scoring
column as the Garnet advanced in the winner's bracket for the third time in as many years.

Walters tallied a game-high 11 boards to go along with 11 points, while frontcourt mate Karen Berk '08 added nine points and five rebounds. Freshmen
guards Melissa Grigsby and Kylah Field added nine and seven points, respectively.

Swarthmore Rally Falls Short in Missouri

Garnet guards Noam Fleigelman '08 and Matt Kurman '08 each scored 20 points as Swarthmore fell to Wisconsin Lutheran 84-77 in the 22nd annual Lopata
Classic on the campus of Washington University on St. Louis on Friday evening.

Swarthmore (0-6 overall) will play the University of Dallas at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 3 in the consolation game .

Sophomore forward Ian McCormick tallied his first double-double of the season, scoring 15 points to go along with a game-high 15 rebounds. The Garnet out-rebounded W-L on the evening 41-26, yet committed 26 turnovers to Lutheran's 16.

Swarthmore fought back from a 43-34 halftime deficit to take a 59-58 lead following a Fliegelman lay-up with 9:37 left in the game.

Wisconsin-Lutheran clipped off a 10-3 run to extend the lead back to six, a margin it would maintain for the remainder of the contest.

Fleigelman shot a perfect six for six from the charity stripe on his way to a career-high 20 points. Kurman sank a game-high six triples while contributing six assists and five rebounds for Swarthmore. Junior forward Mark Rohde added ten points, six rebounds, and four assists for the Garnet.

Garnet Rank High In ITA Fall Listing

The Swarthmore women's tennis team, the 2005 Centennial Conference champion, has been ranked 26th in the nation and seventh in the Atlantic South Region, in the final fall rankings released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The ITA ranked the top 30 teams in the nation, as well as the top handful of teams in each region. This spring Swarthmore will play four teams ranked in the top 25, including top-ranked Emory University (GA) and #2 Washington & Lee (VA).

In addition to appearing on both ITA ranking lists, the Garnet women's tennis also had a number of individual players appear on the fall ITA regional rankings. Junior Sonya Reynolds, an ITA All-American selection in 2004, is ranked number 13 in the Atlantic South Region in singles, while freshman Jennie Park is ranked 16th. The doubles team of Reynolds and junior Marissa Matthews are ranked eight in the region.

Reynolds went 18-5 in singles play in 2005, earning an invitation to compete in the 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championship at Kalamazoo College on May 21-23.  Four of her defeats were to fellow Division III All-Americans, with the other coming against a Division I foe.  Reynolds posted an 8-1 record in Centennial Conference matches at No.1 singles and then cruised through the Centennial Individual Championships without dropping a set, becoming the third Garnet woman to capture the singles title.

In the final ITA rankings of 2004, Reynolds finished up 18th in the nation and 7th in the Atlantic South Region.  Reynolds, teamed with Matthews, also earned a No. 15 doubles ranking in the region

Swarthmore Ranked 16th

Swarthmore men's tennis has been ranked 16th in the country and fourth in the Atlantic South region, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Rankings. The ITA fall rankings list the top 30 Division-III teams in the nation and the top handful of teams in each region. The University of California-Santa Cruz leads the national rankings, and Emory University (GA) is ranked first in Swarthmore's region.

The Garnet welcome three Division I opponents to the Faulkner Courts and then will face six top-30 teams this spring, including the top-ranked Banana Slugs on March 6.

Along with its national and regional rankings, Swarthmore had individual players ranked among the top players in the region. In singles, Zach Rodd '06 is ranked fourth, while Jon Reiss '07 is ranked seventh. In the doubles listing, the team of Brian Park '06 and Rodd is ranked fifth.

Blue Jays Fly Past Garnet

Swarthmore, PA - Garnet sophomore center Karen Berk tallied her first double-double of the season, but a huge effort by the Johns Hopkins front court (32 points and 25 rebounds) as the Blue Jays escaped Swarthmore with a 60-57 Centennial Conference victory on Wednesday evening in Tarble Pavilion. Johns Hopkins improves its record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the CC while the Garnet drop to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial.

The visiting Blue Jays jumped out to a 10-4 lead following a jumper by forward Amanda Leese at 16:24. Swarthmore fought back to tie the game at 12-12 as senior guard Jennifer Stevenson (right) sank a three-pointer.

The two teams battled back and forth through the first half, knotting the score 10 separate times. The Blue Jays got consecutive buckets from forward Andrea Dodrill and guard Haley Wojdowski to take a 33-30 lead into the intermission.

The Garnet came out strong in the second half, running off an 8-2 spurt to take a 38-35 lead following another Stevenson jumper with 15:25 remaining.

Johns Hopkins countered with an 11-2 run of their own, capped by a Caitlin Sloan-lay up at 9:31.

The Blue Jays kept a five- and six-point cushion for much of the remainder of the game. Swarthmore made one final push, cutting the lead to two points, 59-57 with fifty-one seconds remaining. A Julie Miller free throw for Hopkins, with nine seconds on the clock, forced the Garnet into a desperation three with time running out. The ball did not fall on this night, and Johns Hopkins skipped town with its fifth straight win over Swarthmore.

Stevenson led all scorers with 15 points and added seven rebounds, while Berk contributed 12 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Freshman wing Melissa Grigsby put home a career-high 10 points in 22 minutes of action.

Miller led a trio of Blue Jay forwards in scoring. The junior had 13 points and eight rebounds while Leese tallied 12 points and a team-high nine boards. Sophomore forward Andrea Dodrill contributed eight points and eight rebounds off the bench for Johns Hopkins.

The Garnet will travel north to Massachusetts for the annual Seven Sisters Tournament this weekend. Swarthmore takes on St. Joseph's (Ct.) in the opening round on Friday, Dec. 2 at 7:00 p.m. on the campus of Smith College. The Garnet have reached the championship game in each of the last two seasons, falling to Mt. Holyoke both times.

Blue Jays Hop Over Swarthmore

Garnet wing Steve Wolf '08 scored a career high 25 points on Wednesday evening, but the Garnet (0-5, 0-2 CC) fell to the visiting Johns Hopkins Blue Jays 75-56 in Centennial Conference action in Tarble Pavilion.

The Blue Jays (3-2, 1-0 CC) jumped out to a quick 11-2 lead before Garnet center Jon Tundel '09, making his first start of the season, nailed a three-pointer to start a Swarthmore run that would soon tie the game at 14. Tundel and frontcourt mate Ian McCormick '08 combined for nine early before points before running into foul trouble; each would play only six minutes in the half.

With the two big men on the bench, the scoring load fell to Wolf, and the sophomore responded by pouring in 18 points, hitting jump shots from inside and out. Swarthmore kept the game close and was within two points at 27-25 with 4:52 remaining before Hopkins closed the half with a 13-4 run, taking a 40-29 lead.

Both teams struggled offensively throughout much of the second half; with 10 minutes remaining, the Blue Jays' lead was 49-37. Two minutes later, a Noam Fliegelman '07 three-pointer brought Swarthmore back within 11 at 51-40, but that was as close as the Garnet would get. A three-pointer by the Blue Jays' Doug Polster capped a 7-0 run that stretched the lead to 18 and the visitors never again led by less than 15.

Strong offensive rebounding was a key to the Johns Hopkins victory; the visitors grabbed nine while holding Swarthmore to four. The Blue Jays also dominated the inside game, outscoring the Garnet 46-14 in the paint.

McCormick led the Swarthmore's second half offense with 13 points on five for seven shooting on his way to 17 points on the evening.

Wolf added seven in the half to finish with a career-high 25 while playing almost 39 minutes. He also grabbed a team-leading eight rebounds. Tundel led the team with three assists, all to McCormick, as the duo flashed a potent high-low game.

Rugged forward Danny Narwocki led the way for the Blue Jays with 17 points.

The Garnet will fly to St. Louis, Mo. tomorrow morning to get ready for the Lopota Classic, hosted by Washington University of St. Louis. Swarthmore faces Wisconsin Lutheran at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2 and will play either Washington or the University of Dallas on Saturday evening. Centennial Conference play returns to Tarble Pavilion next Thursday, December 8, when the Garnet will host defending champion Ursinus at 7:00 p.m.

Garnet Dipped in Lancaster

The visiting Swarthmore Garnet were downed 77-65 by host Franklin & Marshall in Lancaster, Pa. on Sunday afternoon in the opening game of the 2005-06 Centennial Conference schedule. Swarthmore (0-4) was led by 15 points from sophomore forward Ian McCormick and a career-high 13 points from freshman forward Jon Tundel.

Tundel carried the Swarthmore offensive load in the first half, shooting five for nine from the field for 13 first-half points as the Garnet shot 48% from the floor.

The Diplomats (3-1, 1-0 CC) kept pace with 50% shooting (15-30), turning eight first-half steals into a 44-30 lead at the intermission.

McCormick caught fire in the second half, scoring 11 points to keep Swarthmore within striking distance. Fellow sophomores Steve Wolf and Matt Kurman contributed 10 and nine second-half points, respectively, for the Garnet.

The F&M defense limited Swarthmore to 31% shooting (10 for 32) in the second half, while Diplomat guard Brandon Smith turned in 10 points and three assists to send F&M to its second consecutive win.

With the win, F&M head coach Glenn Robinson tallied his 700th career victory, becoming just the 25th coach in college basketball history to achieve the milestone.

Wolf finished with 14 points while Kurman contributed 10 points for Swarthmore. Tundel grabbed a game- and career-high 10 rebounds tally the first double-double of his young collegiate career.

Swarthmore returns to Tarble Pavilion for its next contest. The Garnet will host Centennial rival Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 8:00 p.m.
