3/14: Garnet run past Greyhounds
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Junior midfielder Athena Samaras scored three first-half goals as the Garnet rolled to a 14-0 lead over the Moravian Greyhounds on their way to a 15-5 victory.
Heidi Fieselmann '06, taking over the attack position from the graduated Elle Forbes '05, opened the scoring with an unassisted goal 2:31 into the game. Sophomore midfielder Megan Sanborn captured the ensuing draw, her second of three straight draw controls to open the game. The Garnet would win the next two draws as well and 9 of 12 in the first half, keeping the ball out of Greyhound sticks.
Samaras got on the board at 4:49, converting a Niamh Shortt '06 feed. Shortt picked up a goal of her own just 1:40 later, and juniors Katie Crawford and Lindsay Roth soon found the net as well.
Anna de Regt '09 came off the bench after Roth's tally and quickly made her presence felt, hitting Fieselmann with a nice pass right in front of of the net for a pretty goal. Two minutes later, de Regt picked up a goal of her own off a Shortt feed.
Samaras added two more goals, de Regt converted a free position shot, and Kelsey Hatzell '09 also scored as the Garnet surged to an 11-0 halftime lead.
Goaltender Susannah Blair '08 had a strong half in net, making five saves.
Swarthmore continued the onslaught in the second half, with Crawford, Shortt, and Hatzell adding goals before Moravian got on the board.
The Greyhounds scored the next four goals before Marissa Schaffer '09 scored off a free position with just 3:54 to play. Greyhound midfielder Lindsey Lustrino closed out the scoring with two minutes later, completing a hat trick.
Defender Chloe Lewis '06 acted as a steadying influence in the second half as several Swarthmore reserves saw extended action. The senior tied with Shortt for the team lead in ground balls with three.
Blair finished with nine saves to move to 3-0 on the season.
Moravian (0-1) was opening just its fifth season as a varsity program in Division III.
