Women’s Lacrosse: Garnet Spook Owls

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Anna de Regt tied a career-high with five goals to lead Swarthmore to a 16-6 victory over the visiting Bryn Mawr Owls in Centennial action. Junior Lindsay Roth added a hat trick as the two midfielders to claimed a share of the team lead in goals.

Bryn Mawr's Moriah Scott kicked off the scoring with a goal 5:51 into the match, but the Garnet scored four straight goals to take command. Roth notched a pair of goals four minutes apart, the second coming after a pretty pass from midfielder Katie Crawford '07 11:29 in. Senior Heidi Fieselmann quickly converted a third goal to give the Garnet a 3-1 lead.

Eight minutes passed before another goal was scored as both teams were able to force frequent turnovers. Finally, with 9:50 remaining in the half, Fieselmann took a Kelsey Hatzell '09 feed and found the back of the net, extending the Garnet lead to 4-1.

The Owls controlled the ensuing draw and took the ball right down the field, where Scott picked up her second goal of the game.

From there, it was all de Regt until the end of the first half as the freshman completed a hat trick in under eight minutes of play. Crawford picked up her second assist on de Regt's first goal; the latter two tallies came off of free position attempts, with the final goal coming with just eight seconds left in the half.

Interspersed into de Regt's streak were Owl goals by Jen Lam and Greta Flaherty, limiting Swarthmore's halftime lead to 7-4.

The Owls drew first blood in the second period as Flaherty found the back of the net just over two minutes into the period. Bryn Mawr would not score again, though, until 16:46 had passed and the Garnet had scored eight unanswered goals.

Hatzell got things going, converting a free position attempt just one minute after Flaherty's goal. Sophomores Megan Sanborn (2) and Rachel Jordan, junior Athena Samaras, Roth, de Regt, and Hatzell (for the second time) all tickled the twine during the run.

After Zoe Fuller-Young scored the Owls' final goal, de Regt closed out the scoring with her fifth goal with 5:55 to play.

Roth and de Regt now share the team lead in points (30) and goals (24), with six assists each on the season. Crawford is right behind with 23 goals and five dishes.

The Garnet (11-3, 3-3 CC) aggressively attacked the net, drawing a total of 34 fouls on the Owls, and were highly efficient with their free position attempts, converting eight of twelve.

Sophomore goalie Susannah Blair made nine saves in the victory. Crawford finished with a team-high five ground balls.

Owls net minder Alex Byers made 13 stops for Bryn Mawr (5-9, 0-5 CC) while Flaherty and Scott scored two goals apiece.

Swarthmore welcomes Centennial rival Muhlenberg to Clothier Field on Thursday, April 13 at 5:00 p.m.
