Women’s Tennis: Garnet Slide Past #24 Eagles
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- 25th-ranked Swarthmore swept the doubles' matches and got a pair of wins at the top two singles' positions to earn a 5-4 win at 24th-ranked Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Sonya Reynolds and freshman Jennie Park both won their singles' and doubles' matches to lead the Garnet to victory.
Reyonlds combined with classmate Marissa Matthews to defeat UMW's Natalie Fugate and Kate Miglin, ranked 11th in the Atlantic South region, at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-6. Juniors Sara Sargent and Waverly Lutz downed the Eagles' Rebecca Morse-Karzen and Kelsey Mansmann 8-4 at No. 3s while Park and sophomore Erica Lukoski got past Gayle Smith and Stephanie Kurti 8-6 at No.2s to complete the doubles' sweep.
Reynolds, the fifth-ranked player in the Atlantic South region, made short work of Miglin (ranked 23rd) at No. 1 singles, winning 6-1, 6-4.
Park secured the win for Swarthmore with an easy 6-1, 6-3 win over Fugate at No. 2 singles.
Swarthmore will travel to Allentown, Pa. for a match that could decide first place in the Centennial Conference. The Garnet face off with rival Muhlenberg at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 11 with the Mules' 33-match home winning streak on the line.
