Langley Bounces Shoremen

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Swarthmore freshman midfielder Dylan Langley had an assist and score the game-winning goal as the Garnet (6-2 overall, 2-1 Centennial) defeated Washington (Md.) 2-1 in Centennial men's soccer action Wednesday night.

Swarthmore midfielder Yoi Tibbetts '09 put the Garnet on the board with Swarthmore's first shot of the evening, finishing off a nice cross by Langley flicked on after a throw-in from senior defender Duncan Gromko at 21:38.  It is Tibbetts third goal of the season.

The Shoremen (4-3 overall, 1-2 CC) took advantage of free kick seven minutes later - sophomore midfielder Brian Danver tapped the ball to sophomore midfielder Brian Schultz, who drilled in his team-leading fourth score at 28:11.

The score was tied 1-1 at halftime.

Swarthmore put home the game-winner off a strong corner kick - midfielder J.P. Faunes '08 looped the ball towards the crowd in front of the net and sophomore defender Jeff Kushner re-directed the ball with a header.  The flick found its way to Langley, who put the ball home at 70:00 for his second score of the season and his first collegiate game-winner.

Swarthmore goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe made one save in the first half and freshman Zach Weimar came in for the second half, registering two stops.  Shoremen counterpart Marc Petrucci recorded five saves in net.

Washington held an 11-8 advantage in shots in the game, while Swarthmore maintained a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Garnet have won four in a row over the Shoremen after Washington ran off a streak of eight wins in a row from 1995 to 2002.

Swarthmore returns home for the first time in two and a half weeks, welcoming Franklin & Marshall to Clothier Stadium for a 7:00 p.m. game on Sat, Sept. 30.
