Garnet Cash in Bond with Win over Owls



BRYN MAWR, Pa. - Swarthmore freshman outside hitter Johanna Bond racked up a team-high eight kills and junior middle blocker Karen Berk totaled nine blocks as the Garnet defeated home-standing Bryn Mawr 3-0 in Centennial volleyball action Tuesday night.

Swarthmore improves to 10-4 overall and 3-1 in the Centennial after downing the Owls (7-6 overall, 0-4 CC) by scores of 30-27, 30-25, and 30-18.

The Garnet were sluggish to start game one, using sheer persistence to pull out the close 30-27 win.  The Swarthmore attack got rolling in game two, led by Berk (four blocks) and classmate Katherine Gold (three service aces).

The freshman class controlled the action in game three - Bond put home six kills and setter Kearney Bangs '10 served four aces.  Gold tallied three more kills while Berk tallied four points (two kills, one block, one ace).

Bangs finished night with 20 assists and four aces while Gold contribute four aces of her own.  Sophomore libero Erin Heaney led the defense with 17 digs.

Swarthmore resumes Centennial action this Friday night, Sept. 29 at 7:00 p.m. when the Dickinson Red Devils come to Tarble Pavilion.
