The Garnet men got the historic night rolling with a dominating performance in the 400 medley relay.  Sophomore Douglas Gilchrist-Scott got it started with a 56.30 split in the backstroke, senior Andrew Koczo flew down the lane during the breaststroke in 59.45, Brian Roth '07 kept the four second advantage up with a strong butterfly, and freshly-mohawked Jason Horwitz '07 completed the win with a 49.10 freestyle leg (overall time was 3:40.31).

Frampton rolled to an easy win in the 1,000 free, lapping all the other competitors (except second-place Reid Wilkening '10 - 10:57.09) with a time of 10:27.43.  After Michael Ann '10 (1:48.72) and Stephen Shymon '08  (1:51.37) picked up second and third, respectively in the 200 free, Horwitz made a big turn in the 50 free, rolling to victory in a time of 22.39.  The Garnet upped their lead to 61-32 after picking up three of the top four spots in the 200 IM.

The men continued to pick up large chunks of points, claiming second, third and fourth in the 200 butterfly, the 100 freestyle and the 200 backstroke--Horwitz made a valiant comeback in the backstroke, finishing just a hair out of first (2:09.04) after a thinking a false start had occurred, starting the race late.

The Garnet clinched the dual meet title after the 500 freestyle, taking the top three positions--Shymon (4:59.54) and Frampton (5:00.68) brought home the banner with their traditional neck-and-neck battle.

On the women's side, the Garnet (7-3 overall, 6-1 CC) 400 freestyle relay teams picked up second and third.  Freshman Anne Miller took top honors in the 1,000 with a time of 11:07.52 while Julia Wroeble '10 and Jennie Lewis '08 took second (2:00.56) and third (2:04.35), respectively in the 200 freestyle.

Swarthmore kept the momentum going, sweeping the 50 freestyle, led by Cotcamp (25.53).  Miller picked up her second victory of the night in the 200 butterfly (2:10.93), just beating classmate Casey Osborn (2:11.47) to put the Garnet ahead 61-51.

The Shorewomen pulled ahead, 76-74, after strong efforts in the 100 free and 200 back stroke, but the Garnet forged ahead with a sweep in the 500 freestyle.  Miller collected her third win of the night (5:29.66) with Lewis close behind at (5:31.73).  Swarthmore clinched its seventh win of the season by swimming one-two in the 200 breaststroke--senior Jennie Yeo was first (2:33.53) with classmate Michele Hom close behind in second (2:34.84).

Both teams will train over the next nine days in preparation for the 2007 Centennial Conference Championships, set to take place on Feb. 16-18 at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa.  Fans can follow live action of the Championships via the Centennial Conference site and Franklin & Marshall College.

GAME BOX SCORE

LINCOLN UNIVERSITY, Pa. - Swarthmore junior Karen Berk posted her 16th double-double of the season while Pamela Costello '10 and Melissa Grigsby '09 chipped in 10 points apiece as the Garnet fell at Lincoln 76-57 in non-conference basketball action Tuesday night.

The Lions' Mary Rotimi shot 10 of 13 from the floor and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds while Shanice Nesmith hit 4 of 9 from three-point land for 17 points to lead Lincoln (13-8) to victory.

Swarthmore got off to a good start, opening a 10-4 lead following a triple by junior guard Laura Popovics at the 15:45 mark in the first half.  Freshman forward Pamela Costello kept the good mojo going, hitting her own three-pointer before adding a lay-up to keep the Garnet in front, 15-10 with 11:08 left in the half.

The Lions turned up the perimeter defense and began to work the offensive attack inside to Rotimi, clipping off a 21-6 to close the first half.  Lincoln, on the back of 15 points and eight rebounds from Rotimi, owned a 31-21 lead heading into the locker room.

Lincoln opened up the second half with more pressure, putting a 9-4 up to take a 15-point lead with 16:02 to play.  Berk asserted her presence for Swarthmore, dropping in a jumper and two free throws to cut the deficit to nine.  Lincoln forced the issue once again, turning Swarthmore over 28 times on the night to guarantee their first winning season since 2000.

Berk was 8 of 19 from the floor and 7 of 11 from the charity stripe to total a game-high 23 points, her 24th consecutive game scoring in double figures.  Berk's game-high 16 rebounds gave her 261 on the season, passing her previous career-best of 254.  It is the sixth-best single season total by a Swarthmore woman.

Costello finished the game 3 of 5 from the floor, including 2 of 3 from beyond the arc.  The freshman forward leads the team with 20 triples on the season, hitting at nearly 40 % (20 for 52, 38.5%).

Garnet Outlast McDaniel in Barnburner

February 4th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Swarthmore junior Steve Wolf scored 14 of his 19 points during a critical five-minute stretch late in the second half and the Garnet put up a season-high point total on their way to an 85-75 triumph over visiting McDaniel in a critical Centennial Conference contest.

The Green Terror led 58-51 with 11:08 to play but Swarthmore went on a 26-12 run over the next 6:48 to take a 77-70 lead and did not allow McDaniel to get any closer than three points the rest of the way.

McDaniel center Josh McKay came off the bench early and keyed the visitors to an 14-8 lead with nine quick points.  Swarthmore quickly cut the lead to 14-12 and the Terror maintained their small edge until freshman guard Matt Allen found sophomore forward Raul Ordonez under the basket on an inbounds play to give the hosts a 24-23 lead with 5:23 left in the half.  Four more lead changes occurred before Ordonez returned the favor with seven seconds remaining, finding an open Allen beyond the arc for three and a 34-30 Garnet advantage.

The story of the half was the inspired play of the Garnet reserves.  With Wolf and classmate Ian McCormick on the bench with foul trouble, Ordonez went 4-7 from the field, picking up eight points, four rebounds, and two steals in 13 minutes of action.  Allen scored his six points on a pair of threes in 10 minutes of action, senior Dillon McGrew scored five points, and classmate Mark Rohde converted a pair of free throws.

The Terror bench, led by McKay, were also productive; all in all, 37 of the 64 points scored in the period came from reserves.

McDaniel opened the second half with a 7-2 spurt, but four McCormick points sandwiched around McGrew's second trey put the Garnet back up by five, 44-39.  Play became fast, furious, and physical.  The quick Terror guards tried to speed the game up, while the bigger Garnet looked to exploit mismatches inside, often with success; McDaniel was called for 28 fouls on the afternoon.

From 15:57 remaining to 11:39, neither team led by more than three as three lead changes and two ties occurred.  Finally, at 11:39, Terror guard Ryan Brandenburg converted an old-fashioned three-point play and followed up with three more from beyond the arc on the visitors' next possession to give them their largest lead at 58-51.

The lead was six when, on consecutive possessions, Garnet junior Matt Kurman hit from downtown and Wolf converted an and-one to tie the game at 59 with 9:43 to go.  McDaniel came back with five straight points, including Joseph Hunter's third trifecta of the day, but Wolf was just getting into gear.  The junior converted another and-one to tie the game at 66 with 8:13 left, and after McDaniel re-took the lead, tied it again when Allen found him wide open by the basket for a lay-up.

Wolf returned the favor a few possessions later, finding Allen for the freshman's third trey of the day and a 71-68 Swarthmore lead.  The duo kept it going on the next possession, when Allen fed Wolf for another lay-up, forcing a McDaniel timeout with 6:15 to play and the margin 73-68.

McCormick entered for Wolf with 5:06 remaining and scored the Garnet's next three points, stretching the lead to 78-70.  A Finch lay-up and another three-ball from Hunter cut the lead to three, but McCormick responded with a jumper in the paint and Swarthmore made five of six free throws down the stretch to clinch the victory.

Wolf made seven of eight from the line on his way to a game-high 19 points and also grabbed six rebounds.  McCormick added 13 points, Allen 11, and Kurman 10.  Freshman Matt Turner grabbed a team-high eight boards, and Allen and senior Chris Casey dished out five assists each.

Casey neutralized Brandenburg, McDaniel's leading scorer, nearly all afternoon, holding him to 12 points on 3-13 shooting from the floor.

Hunter led five Terror players in double figures with 14 points.  Rugged forward Chad Arrington led everybody with 15 rebounds.

After today's win by Gettysburg and losses by Franklin & Marshall and Haverford, Swarthmore remains tied for fourth (with the Bullets) in the Centennial at 7-7.  Haverford is in third at 8-6, F&M is a game back at 6-8, and the Green Terror slip to 5-8 in CC play.

Swarthmore will look to avenge an early-season loss when they travel to Allentown, Pa. on Wednesday evening to take on the Muhlenberg Mules.  Game time is 8:00 p.m.

#25 McDaniel Runs Past Swarthmore

February 4th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Garnet junior forward Karen Berk put up 23 points and pulled down 15 rebounds against #25 ranked McDaniel but it wasn't enough as Swarthmore fell 80-54 in Tarble Pavilion Saturday afternoon.  The Green Terror's 39 points
from the bench and 60% shooting from the field helped them win their 14th game in a row.

McDaniel's well balanced scoring was led by the senior trio of forward Allison Biggs (12 points), center Theresa Hess (12 points), and guard Katy Powell.  Powell had 10 points to move within six points of 1,000 for her career.

McDaniel (18-2, 12-1 CC) got off to an early lead with high-pressure defense and quick transitions.  At the 6:16 mark in the first half, Swarthmore senior forward Jess Fuhr hit two free throws to cut McDaniel's lead to five but a Green Terror surge spread the margin to 11 at the half.

The Garnet looked for answers to McDaniel's 56% FG shooting in the first half allowing only two points off the fast break in the second.  Despite that McDaniel's hot hands got hotter as they continued to improve their shooting in the second half going 64% from the field.

Garnet sophomore guard Melissa Grigsby had a strong second half for Swarthmore.  She hit a pair of free throws at the 8:13 mark to bring the game back to 10.  The mounting comeback was squelched when Berk missed a layup and commited her 5th foul leaving the game for good.

McDaniel used this opportunity to close the door and go on a 16-0 run with some tough Defense, shooting 8 of 11 from the field in the remaining six minutes.  During that span, McDaniel allowed only one more field goal by the Garnet.

A bright spot for the Garnet was their ability to get to the line and convert shooting 88% as a team--15 for17--free throws for the game.

Berk hit double figures for the 23rd straight game and picked up her 14th double-double of the season.  Grigsby reached double digits for the fourth consecutive game, shooting 4 of 7 for 12 points.

The Swarthmore women (4-16, 1-14 CC) travel to Lincoln University on Tues., Feb. 6 for a 7:00 p.m. game.  The Garnet resume Centennial action on Saturday, Feb. 10 with a 2:00 p.m. game at Gettysburg.

Garnet Narrowly Miss Upset of #20 Johns Hopkins

February 1st, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Swarthmore got 20 points from junior Ian McCormick and a double-double from Steve Wolf '08 as the Garnet just missed pulling a huge upset over visiting Johns Hopkins.  The Blue Jays (18-2, 12-1 CC), ranked 20th in all of Division III, overcame a 13-point second half deficit to win 63-59 on Wednesday night in Tarble Pavilion.

Johns Hopkins senior forward Matt Griffin led all scorers with 21 points, shooting 7 of 7 from the free throw line, while T.J. Valerio added 10 points.

The Garnet got the jump on the Blue Jays in the first half, taking a 9-8 lead after a short jumper in the lane by freshman Matt Turner at 13:56.  Swarthmore looked to force the ball inside, but the JHU defense stood strong, picking up eight first-half blocks.

The contest featured the top two pairs of forwards in the Centennial - the Garnet have McCormick and Wolf (combined 27.2 points per game and 15.6 rebounds per game coming into the game) while Hopkins counters with Griffin and senior Danny Nawrocki (29.3 ppg and 16.0 rpg).

Swarthmore remained persistent inside, with McCormick's left hook in the lane at 9:45 conpleted an 8-4 run to put the home team up 17-12.  Johns Hopkins used a 7-2 spurt of its own to tie the score at 19-apiece.  A two-handed jam by Griffin and a three-pointer from guard Doug Polster sparked the Blue Jays' surge.

Wolf knocked down a three-pointer from the far corner at 2:19 and a Matt Kurman '08 triple 24 second later put Swarthmore out front 29-23.

A JHU turnover with six seconds left in the half allowed Swarthmore to set up one final play.  Kurman raced across the mid-court stripe and lost his footing; the junior tossed the ball over his shoulder to senior guard Chris Casey who let it fly from 40 feet between two taller defenders.  The ball fell from the rafters and kissed high off the window, spinning on the cylinder for a brief second before dropping in to send Swarthmore to the locker room with a 34-24 lead.

McCormick led all scorers with 11 points while Wolf chipped in 10 points and nine boards.  Swarthmore held a commanding 25-15 lead on the glass.

The Garnet maintained its edge for the first ten minutes of the second half—Turner opened up the stanza by knifing through the lane for a lay-up.

Valerio made two free throws at 11:58 to cut the lead to 46-37 Swat.  Garnet sophomore forward Raul Ordonez muscled in a bucket on the next Swarthmore possession and Kurman hit a fall-away jumper on the left wing to put the home team in front, 50-37, forcing a Blue Jays' timeout at 10:47.

The wheels continued to fall off the Johns Hopkins' wagon - the team was called for two technical fouls in one possession.  Swarthmore was awarded four free throws and possession, yet could only come up with a single point.

A free throw contest ensued over the next ten minutes.  Physical from the start of the second half, the two teams were whistled for 34 fouls and put up 49 free throws.  Neither team was terribly accurate—each side shot 65 % in the second half (JHU 19 of 29, Swarthmore 13 of 20).

Wolf, Kurman, and McCormick combined to hit five of six from the line, putting Swarthmore up ten, 59-49, with 3:26 to play.  McCormick's first of two, awarded after Nawrocki's fifth and final foul, would be the last point the Garnet scored on the night.

Forced to go to a quicker line-up, Johns Hopkins employed a successful full-court press, turning Swarthmore over six times in the three minutes and change.  Griffin's lay-up at 1:12 tied the score at 59-all and after a Swarthmore miss, Blue Jays senior Chris Morley put the visitors on top with a lay-in with 24 seconds left.  Another Swarthmore turnover and two Griffin free throws sealed the seventh consecutive win for Johns Hopkins.

The Garnet held a 42-36 edge on the boards while Hopkins won the turnover battle, 21-14.

Wolf was 8 of 10 from the line for 16 points and tied his career-high with 14 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season.  McCormick hit double figures for the 10th consecutive game, increasing his scoring career total to 942.  He picked up two blocked shots to move into sole possession of ninth place all-time in the Centennial (113).

Swarthmore resume its push for a Centennial Conference playoff bid on Saturday, February 3 with a 4:00 p.m. home game against McDaniel.  The Garnet sit in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Conference with Gettysburg (6-7) and Franklin & Marshall (6-7).  Don't forget the annual Swarthmore Alumni Game takes place this Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Tarble Pavilion.
