SWARTHMORE, Pa. -  Garnet junior forward Karen Berk dropped in 17 points and senior captain Jess Fuhr added 11 points with five blocks yet the visiting Johns Hopkins Blue Jays (11-7, 9-4 CC) used a 53-24 edge on the glass to defeat Swarthmore 70-53 in Centennial women's basketball action Tuesday night in Tarble Pavilion.

John Hopkins forwards Kristin Phillips and Andrea Dodrill each picked up double-doubles while senior guard Whitney Davis scored a game-high 22 points on 4 of 8 shooting from three-point land.

Both teams were hot from outside to start the night--the Blue Jays took an early 6-3 lead following Davis' first triple at 17:27.  Swarthmore grabbed the lead three minutes later when freshman forward Pamela Costello hit three-pointers on consecutive possessions, pushing the home team in front, 11-8, at the 14:01 mark.

Johns Hopkins countered with a pair of three-pointers by sophomore guard Caitlin Sloane to re-claim the lead, 16-13, with 11:40 left in the first half.  Senior wing Haley Wojdowski hit a triple of her own and scored on a nice backdoor pass from Dodrill to increase the Blue Jays' lead to 23-17 at 8:10.  A Berk jumper and another three-pointer by Costello brought Swarthmore within one, 23-22, at the 7:07 spot.

Johns Hopkins clicked off a 9-0 spurt, going up by 10 after two Phillips' free throws with 3:47 left in the half.  Fuhr dropped in a jumper and Berk put in two lay-ups to bring Swarthmore within four, 32-28, at the intermission.

Berk led all scorers with 10 points and Costello chipped in nine points, while Phillips scored nine points to go along with eight rebounds.

Hopkins out-rebounded Swarthmore 25-9 in the first half, but the Garnet kept the game close by shooting 47.8% from the field.

The Blue Jays used a 16-7 run over the first 8:44 of the second half to build a 13-point lead, 48-35.  Swarthmore would only get as close as 11 (following a Fuhr jumper at 1:51) the rest of the way.

Berk was 7 of 9 from the free throw line, scoring in double digits for the 21st consecutive game.  Fuhr and Grigsby combined to shoot 10 for 17 from the floor—Grigsby added a team-high four assists while Fuhr tied her career-best mark for blocks.

Phillips finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds (13 offensive) for Johns Hopkins while Dodrill dropped in 10 points to go along with a game-high 16 rebounds.  Wojdowski filled up the stat sheet with eight points, six rebounds, six assists, and a game-high four steals.

McCormick Named Centennial Player of the Week

January 30th, 2007

LANCASTER, Pa.  - Swarthmore forward Ian McCormick (Seattle, WA / University Prep) has been named Player of the Week by the Centennial Conference for the week of Jan. 22-28, as announced by Executive Director Steve Ulrich on Monday afternoon.

McCormick, a junior, averaged 22.5 points and 14.5 rebounds per game in leading the Garnet to a pair of victories this past week.  He set career-highs with 29 points and 19 rebounds in the 83-78 win at Washington on Jan. 24 and followed that effort with a 16-point, 10-rebound afternoon in a 66-60 win over Dickinson on Jan. 27.

McCormick could become the sixth Swarthmore man in the 1,000 point-500 rebound club.

McCormick, an economics major, has scored double figures in nine straight games and has eight double-doubles to his credit this season.  He leads the team in points per game (14.3), rebounds per game (9.3), blocks per game (2.2), and field goal percentage (48.3%).  McCormick ranks second in the conference in blocks per game and is also third in rebounds per game.

McCormick has appeared in 60 games in just over two and-a-half seasons at Swarthmore, tallying 922 points and 504 rebounds.  He is the 12th Swarthmore man to enter the 500-rebound club, and with his 1,000th point, will become just the sixth Garnet player to collect both 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.  His 111 career blocks place him second all-time at Swarthmore and are tied for ninth-best in Conference history.

The last Swarthmore male to earn CC Player of the Week honors was current assistant coach Matt Gustafson '05, who garnered the honor on Nov. 11, 2004.

Swarthmore (9-10 overall, 6-6 Centennial) has won five out of its last seven games to pull into a three-way tie for fourth place in the Conference and will host 22nd-ranked Johns Hopkins on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m.

January 28th, 2007

COMPLETE MEET RESULTS

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Swarthmore swim teams took their undefeated Centennial records to Gettysburg and the men came home with a 113-92 win while the women suffered a 132-73 loss.  Sophomore Stephen Shymon led the men with two individual wins while freshman Casey Osborn picked up a pair of victories for the women.

Both teams will return to Ware Pool on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a Centennial meet with Dickinson College.  The first event is set to start at 2:00 p.m.

Berk Tops 1,000 Points, Red Devils Defeat Swarthmore

January 28th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Garnet junior forward Karen Berk scored a team-high 20 points, including the 1,000th point of her career, yet visiting Dickinson used 44 points from forwards Ally Teatom and Piper Etess to defeat Swarthmore 79-58 in Centennial women's basketball action Saturday afternoon in Tarble Pavilion.

Berk, averaging a Centennial-leading 17.5 points per game, needed just nine points entering this afternoon's affair; she scored the milestone basket on a short jumper form the left block at the 11:33 mark in the first half.  Berk becomes the sixth Swarthmore woman to score 1,000 points, joining Heather Kile '02 (Centennial-record 1,965 points), Michele Fowler '86 (1,738), Katie Robinson '04 (1,682), Liz Clarke '90 (1,300) and Jen Truscott '88 (1,095).

The first half of the game was a tight affair—Teatom rebound a miss by guard Carly Okontz and put it back for a 19-14 Dickinson lead with eleven minutes left in the half.  The bucket sparked a 9-2 run as the Red Devils extended their lead to 26-16 after a triple by senior guard Jessica Howard at 7:23.

The Garnet made a surge of their own, getting six points from sophomore guard Melissa Grigsby on an 11-2 run that brought the home team within one, 28-27, at 3:12.

Dickinson (15-3, 10-2 CC) closed the half with five straight points to take a 33-27 lead into the intermission.

Berk led all scorers at half with 16 points while Teatom countered with 12 points for the Red Devils.

Dickinson grabbed control of the game after the break, using nine points from Teatom to build a 50-36 lead at the 13:03 mark.  Teatom and Etess continued to control the play inside as the Red Devils lead grew as large as 26 points.

Teatom shot 13 of 19 from the floor on the way to a game-high 29 points to go along with nine rebounds.  Etess was 9 of 10 from the free throw line for 15 points while Howard added seven points and three assists.

The Red Devils out-scored the Garnet 40-18 in the paint while holding a 39-22 edge in the rebound category.

Berk hit double figures for the 20th straight game but saw her double-double streak end at six consecutive.  Grigsby had her best game to-date, shooting 7 of 13 for a career-high 17 points while having only two turnovers in 37 minutes against the best pressure defense team in the Centennial.  Freshman forward Pamela Costello also had a strong game, tying her career-high with 16 points on 5 of 7 shooting (3 of 4 from three-point land).

The Swarthmore women (4-14, 1-12 CC)will host Johns Hopkins in another Centennial game on Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 7:00 p.m.

Garnet Grind Out Win Over Dickinson

January 28th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - Swarthmore junior forward Steve Wolf scored 21 points and freshman Matt Turner added a career-high 16 as the Garnet moved into a tie for fourth place in the Centennial Conference with a 66-60 victory over the visiting Dickinson Red Devils.

Turner was hot early, busting Dickinson's attempts to play a zone defense by setting up in the high post and knocking down open jumpers.  Both teams spent much of the first half trying to get the ball inside to their respective big men—Ian McCormick '08 for Swarthmore and Tom Leszczynski for Dickinson—but the defenses were winning most of the early battles and the score was just 24-20 in favor of Swarthmore at halftime.

Wolf led with nine first-half points and seven rebounds while Turner chipped in eight points.

Turner dropped in two baskets to open the second half and McCormick sank a 17-footer from the wing as the Garnet pushed their lead to 30-24 with 17:30 to go. Dickinson responded with a 7-2 spurt to cut it to a one-point contest, 32-31, after a driving lay-up by guard Kizmahr Grell.

That would be as close as the visitors would get with Swarthmore taking advantage of frequent trips to the free throw line to keep Dickinson at bay.   The Garnet took 30 free throws in the second half alone, dropping in 17 to pick up their fifth win in seven games.

It was a banner day for the Swarthmore frontcourt—Wolf, Turner, and McCormick accounted for a combined 53 of the team's 66 points.  Only one Swarthmore field goal was accounted for by a Garnet guard—freshman Matt Allen drilled a three-pointer from the top of the circle at 12;24 left in the game.

Wolf was 8 of 16 from the floor and 4 of 6 at the line to hit 20-plus points for the fourth time this season.  Turner shot 7 of 11 from the field to easily top his previous high of 11 points—the lanky freshman also drew a timely charge on Grell, extending his school-record total to 20 on the season.

Swarthmore senior guard Chris Casey continued his march up the all-time assists list, handing out a game-high five dimes to bring his career total to 236.  Casey is now fourth all-time at Swarthmore, trailing Matt Kennel '91 who had 239 career helpers.

McCormick put together his second consecutive double-double with 16 points and a game-high 10 boards.  The junior now has eight double-doubles on the season, second-best in the Conference, and extends his double-figure scoring streak to nine in a row.

Leszczynski dropped in 21 points for Dickinson (5-13, 3-9 CC) while Grell added 12 points and three assists.  The Red Devils shot 19 of 20 from the line but were out-rebounded by Swarthmore 38-34.

Swarthmore has a big Centennial game on Wed., Jan. 31 when first-place Johns Hopkins comes to Tarble Pavilion for a 7:30 p.m. game.  The Garnet sit in a three-way tie for fourth place in the Conference with McDaniel (5-5) and Franklin & Marshall (6-6) and are only one game behind Haverford (7-5).

McCormick Dominates Shoremen, Garnet Hold On For Win

January 25th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

CHESTERTOWN, Md.  - Swarthmore junior center Ian McCormick set career-highs with 29 points and 19 rebounds while classmate Matt Kurman dropped in 17 points as the visiting Garnet (8-10 overall, 5-6 CC) held off Washington (Md.) 83-78 in Centennial men's basketball action Wednesday night.

Todd Green scored a career-high 21 points for the Shoremen (3-13 overall, 2-8 CC) while Joey Breslin added 17 points and Tim Kohlrus chipped in 11 points and career-best five blocks.

Washington came into the night having won four of the last five contests between the two schools.  Always an exciting match-up, the winning team has scored over 80 points in nine of the 15 meetings.  Three times in the three seasons the Swarthmore-Washington game in Tarble Pavilion has headed to double overtime, with the Garnet coming out on top, 87-86, in the most recent extra-period affair in 2005.

The Garnet worked the ball inside in the early going on Wednesday night, getting eight points from McCormick to grab an early 15-12 lead with 13:21 left in the half.  Kolhrus dropped in a jumper for the Shoremen at 8:31 to make it 24-22.  Swarthmore answered with a 9-2 run over the next two minutes; taking a 33-25 lead following two free throws by Wolf.

Washington continued the see-saw action, scoring eight of the next 10 points to make it a two-point game.  Green dropped in a jumper and a three-pointer to bring WAC within 35-33 with 5:11 to go in the half.  The Swarthmore juniors put the Garnet back out front by eight points--guard Noam Fliegelman, Kurman, and McCormick all scored along the way.

Garnet freshman Matt Allen scored a lay-up at the 1:04 mark to put the visitors up by 10, its largest lead of the half, and Swarthmore held a 47-38 lead into the intermission.

McCormick led the Garnet with 12 points and nine rebounds while Kurman added 10 points and three assists.  Swarthmore shot 55% (21 of 38) from the floor and out-rebounded Washington 23-16.  Green dropped in 15 first-half points for the Shoremen while Green added 14 points and three helpers.

The Shoremen busted out of the gate to start the second half, scoring the first five points to make it a four-point game after a three-pointer by Breslin.  McCormick put Swarthmore on the board with a jumper at 17:25 and extended the lead back to six, 51-45, with a pair of free throws.

Washington scored the next six points to take its first lead, 52-51, since the 15:16 mark in the first half.  Staying the back-and-forth course, the Garnet checked off six straight markers of its own to re-claim a five-point spread.  Swarthmore junior Steve Wolf nailed a jumper, freshman Matt Turner hit double figures with a bucket of his own, and senior Chris Casey converted a lay-up to put Swarthmore up 57-52 with 11:42 to go.

McCormick took over the game in the middle of the half, scoring nine of Swarthmore's next 11 points, to help the visitors hold a 72-65 lead at the 5:38 mark.

The Garnet headed to the line 17 times over the next four minutes, sealing its third straight Centennial road victory by hitting 11 of the attempts.  A point of emphasis lately, Swarthmore hit 21 of 34 (61.8%) from the charity stripe on the night, out-performing Washington (13 of 23, 56.5%).

For the first time in 170 games, the Garnet did not make a three-point basket (0 for 4 on the night).  The streak dates back to a 78-61 home loss vs. Drew on Feb. 7, 2000.

McCormick's 19 rebounds are the most by a Garnet player since Joe Culley, Jr. '00 grabbed 19 vs. Moravian on January 7, 2000.

Since returning from Texas after New Year's, McCormick has hit double figures in eight consecutive games and picked up four double-doubles.  McCormick now has 906 career points, inching him closer to becoming the 16th Swarthmore man to accumulate 1,000 points in a career.  The Seattle, Wa.-native is also just six rebounds from joining the 500-rebound club—only five other Garnet men have collected 1,000 points and 500 rebounds during their career at Swarthmore.

Swarthmore will return home on Sat., Jan. 27 when Centennial-foe Dickinson comes to Tarble Pavilion for a 4:00 p.m. game.

Berk Hits 20-20 as Garnet Rally Falls Short

January 24th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

BRYN MAWR, Pa. - Swarthmore junior Karen Berk had 21 points and a season-high 20 rebounds yet the Garnet could not overcome a 16-point second half deficit as Bryn Mawr  defeated the Garnet 53-50 in Centennial women's basketball Tuesday evening.  Owls senior Amy Johnson led the way with 12 points while sophomore Jessica Allen added 11 points and eight rebounds.

The Owls (4-12 overall, 1-9 CC) took a 40-24 lead following a Johnson jumper with 15:59 left in the second half.  Swarthmore (4-13 overall, 1-11 CC) scored the next 13 points to cut it to 40-37.  An old-fashioned three-point play by Garnet senior Jessica Fuhr with 12:30 left and a free throw by junior guard Laura Popovics at 12:11 brought Swarthmore within 10 and forced a Bryn Mawr time-out.  After a Bryn Mawr miss, sophomore guard Melissa Grigsby sank a big three-pointer from the wing at 11:26 and added another corner jumper at 9:21 to cut the Owl lead to 40-37.

The teams traded free throws before Johnson hit a three-pointer at 7:46 to put the Owls back ahead by six, 44-38.  Two free throws by Driscoll pushed the Bryn Mawr advantage back to 46-38 before Berk muscled in a basket at 5:25.  The junior center banked in a shot off transition to bring Swarthmore within three, 46-43, at 4:20.

Allen found freshman Shanika Bridges-King under the basket for an easy bucket at 3:33, then hit a cutting Johnson at 3:01, and finally grabbed an offensive rebound before hitting an open Bridges-King  as the Owls took a comfortable 52-43 lead with 1:30 left in the game.

Berk made two lay-ups and the Owls missed the front end of two one-and-ones to make it a five-point game with 26.5 showing on the clock.  Popovics hit a step-back three at 14.7 to bring Swarthmore within 52-50.  Garnet immediately fouled, sending Driscoll to the line with 13.9 left.  Driscoll made the first and missed the second, and Swarthmore raced up the court.  Unfortunately, two desperation heaves missed their mark as the Owls broke a 28-game losing streak to the Garnet.

A low-scoring game to start, two free throws by Allen opened the game and sophomore Katie Kent made a baseline jumper at 16:12 to make it 4-0 Owls.  Garnet freshman guard Lisa Schumacher got Swarthmore on the board with a bank shot from the top of the key at 15:15.

Kent made a strong move on the baseline to push Bryn Mawr's lead to six but Berk answered with a bucket in the paint at 12:50.   Grigsby clicked in two from the charity stripe to make the score 8-6 at 12:18.  Berk put back her own miss at 11:07 to knot the score at 8-all.  Bryn Mawr ripped off a 5-0 run to take a 13-8 lead at 9:30--a free throw by Allen, a short jumper by Andrea Zambetti and a lay-up by Bridges-King accounted for the scoring.  Berk brought an end to the run with another strong move in the paint at 9:19.

Kent extended the lead to 17-10 at 7:34 by sinking a jumper from the left wing.  Grigsby drilled a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to cut the Owls advantage to four but Bryn Mawr's Shannon McPherson responded with a triple of her own at 5:47.

The Owls pushed their advantage to as much as 10 points, 28-18, following a pair of successful free throws by Johnson with 1:17 left.  Swarthmore freshman forward Pam Costello made a lay-up with 38 seconds left and Schumacher finished off a drive in the lane as the Garnet cut the lead to 28-22 at the intermission.

Berk led Swarthmore with eight points and 10 rebounds at half while Kent paced the Owls with six points and Johnson added five points, all at the charity stripe.

Allen opened up the second for the Owls with seven points to put the home team up 35-24 at 17:53.  After a Garnet turnover, Driscoll added to the Bryn Mawr lead with a three-pointer 15 seconds later and Johnson dropped in her first field goal at 15:40 to give the Owls a 40-24 lead.

Berk finished the night 10 of 23 from the floor, hitting double figures for 20th consecutive game.  It is her 14th double-double of the season and sixth consecutive; it was the second time she has picked up 20 rebounds in a game (career-best is 22 boards vs. Alvernia on Feb. 16, 2006).  Berk now has 991 career points and will look to become the seventh Garnet woman to break the 1,000-point barrier on Saturday in Tarble Pavilion.

For the Owls, Driscoll finished with a double-double, racking up 10 points and 10 rebounds, making 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Driscoll, Johnson, and Allen combined to shoot 18 of 24 from the line on the night.

The Swarthmore women return to action at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 27 when the Dickinson Red Devils come to Tarble Pavilion.
