Garnet Cruise Into Second Round of NCAAs
LEXINGTON, Va. -- The Swarthmore women's tennis team, ranked 17th in the nation, advanced to the second round of the 2007 NCAA Division III Tennis Championships with a 5-0 victory over Cabrini at Washington & Lee University on Friday morning.
The Garnet (13-6) cruised to an early 3-0 lead after the doubles' round. Swarthmore's All-America doubles' pair, seniors Sonya Reynolds and Sara Sargent, rolled to an 8-0 win at No. 1 while Marissa Matthews '07 and Erica Lukoski '08 won their ninth straight match by the score of 8-1. Rachel Wallwork '10 and Waverly Lutz '07 completed the sweep with an 8-1 win at No.3.
Reynolds, selected to play at the 2007 NCAA Division III Individual Championships on May 15-21, improved her record to 17-5 with an easy 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles while Sargent wrapped up the match for the Garnet with a 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4.
Swarthmore advances to the second round where fourth-ranked Washington & Lee awaits for a 10:00 a.m. match on Saturday, May 5.
