Garnet Set PR at Penn Relays, Chaplin Tramps in 1,500 at TCNJ
The Swarthmore men's 4x400 meter relay team ran a 3:28.91 in the Pop Haddleton MAC late on Friday afternoon in the Penn Relays at historic Franklin Field. Swarthmore's time was good for eighth place out of twelve teams present, including five Centennial Conference schools.
Senior Matt Schiller ran the first leg before handing the baton off to classmate Dillon McGrew, junior Michael Bonesteel, and senior Vernon Chaplin.
The Pop Haddleton is named for the longtime cross-country coach at Haverford College.

EWING, N.J. -- Vernon Chaplin '07's season-low time in the 1500 meters, Lauren Deluca '10's personal-best time in the 800m, and Jennifer Yee '07's Centennial Conference championship-qualifying time in the 5000 highlighted Swarthmore's trip to the Lions Invitational at the College of New Jersey on Saturday afternoon.
Chaplin completed the 1500 in 4:02.97, good for third place and just 0.65 seconds back of the winning time. The senior will look to challenge his 2006 CC championship time of 4:01.00 at the 2007 championships next weekend. Right behind were junior Ross Weller (9th--4:06.62), and sophomore Dan Hodson (20th--4:12.60).
Deluca circled the track twice in 2:27.55, putting her in 14th place out of 49 runners. The freshman beat her previous collegiate best time by 4.88 seconds and will challenge for a spot in the final heat at championships. Sophomore Faith Pampel finished nine spots behind Deluca with a time of 2:34.95.
Yee, the lone Garnet competitor in the 5k, finished with a 22:12.87 to earn a spot in next week's championships.
Senior Sam Graffeo finished in the top half of the field in the women's shot put with a distance of 10.68 meters. Sophomore Matt Turner did the same in the men's long jump, leaping 6.55 meters to place sixth overall.
Swarthmore will now gear up for next weekend's Centennial Conference Championships, to be held next Friday-Sunday at Haverford College.
