NYU Swims Past Garnet; Miller and Duncan Clock Two Season Bests

RESULTS

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Senior Anne Miller swam for two season bests and missed the B cut (2:09.12) in the 200 fly by less than a second but it wasn't enough as a perfect NYU (5-0) defeated the Swarthmore (2-2) women 120-79.  Daniel Duncan continued his stellar freshman campaign, touching the wall first in the 200-yard fly and 200-yard free for two of his own season bests Saturday afternoon from Ware Pool.  The men lost 112-93.

Freshman Will Gates Nets 18, but Garnet Fall to Kenyon 71-56 in Equinox Classic

Second-Half Slump Dooms Garnet in 69-43 Season-Opening Loss to TCNJ

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior Kathryn Stockbower scored 18 points and pulled down 14 rebounds, but a 30-2 run over a 12-minute stretch in the second half was enough to help visiting TCNJ break open a tight game as the Lions defeated the homestanding Garnet 69-43 in the first game of the 2009 Swarthmore Tip-Off Tournament from Tarble Pavilion on Saturday afternoon. Garnet Fight Hard, Fall to Middlebury 65-57 in Season Opener

Swarthmore Ousted From NCAA Tournament by Transylvania in Shootout

PITTSBURGH – Junior Gage Newman scored the game-tying goal against Transylvania (15-3-2) in the 85th minute of play to send the game into overtime at 1-1, but Swarthmore’s (16-2-3) quest for an appearance in the NCAA Division III men's soccer Final Four was halted when the Garnet fell to the Pioneers 4-1 in penalty kicks.

Badminton Opens Season With Split

Swarthmore badminton split their first two matches of the 2009-10 season, falling 6-3 to Division I Drexel and defeating Bryn Mawr 5-4.  Kim Kramer '10 and Maithili Parikh '11 led the team in both efforts.

The dynamic duo achieved the only wins against Drexel, winning their no. 1 doubles match 21-9, 21-14, as well as dominating their No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches.  Kramer won at No. 1 21-9, 21-5, while Parikh defeated her opponent 21-3, 21-7.

The Garnet found more success against Bryn Mawr.  Kramer and Parikh cruised in their No. 1 doubles match 21-9, 21-9, and the No. 2 doubles pair of Alice Xiang '10 and Corinne Englebert '13 won 21-18, 21-17.  Kramer and Parikh continued their dominance this season, with Kramer winning no. 1 singles 21-11, 21-7 and Parikh streaking by her No. 2 singles opponent 21-7. 21-7.  Xiang clinched the team win with a 21-9, 19-21, 21-17 win in no. 3 singles.

Swarthmore more badminton now has a break for some intense training.  They continue their season January 23, 2010 at the Main Line Doubles Tournament at Bryn Mawr.

Junior Philippe Celestin, Swarthmore Soccer Featured in Philadelphia Inquirer

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Junior Philippe Celestin and No. 7 Swarthmore College men's soccer team were the subject of a feature story in Thursday's Philadelphia Inquirer. The story focuses on the balancing act that Celestin - who scored the Garnet's game-winning goal on Sunday and performed a stomp music piece at the College's Rhythm and Motion performance - and many Swarthmore students face on a dialy basis, as well as the recent success of the men's soccer team. SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Men's soccer head coach Eric Wagner was recently interviewed by KYW 1060's Matt Leon about the Garnet's remarkable run to the NCAA Sweet 16. Fans can listen to the podcast by following this link.

The Garnet (16-2-2) will face Transylvania on Friday at 5:00 p.m. from Carnegie Mellon University for the chance to move on the Elite Eight on Saturday. Swarthmore Athletes Named to the All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team

LANCASTER, Pa.—Six Swarthmore student-athletes were named to the fall All-Centennial Conference Sportsmanship Team today. The Centennial's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee created the team to emphasize sportsmanship within the Conference. All institutions elected one member from their team who displays good sportsmanship throughout the season to be a member of the All-Centennial team.

The following is a list of Swarthmore student-athletes named to the Sportsmanship Team this fall; their sports are listed alphabetically.

Men’s Cross Country

Andrew Van Buren ’10 (Hudson, OH/Western Reserve Academy)

Led the Garnet in the Centennial Conference Championships, finishing in a time of 30:38.53.

Women’s Cross Country

Lauren DeLuca ’10 (Audubon, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick)

Placed in the top-30 out of a field of more than 100 in the 2009 Centennial Conference Championship.

Field Hockey

Joslyn Young ’10 (Ann Arbor, MI/Community)

Named to the 2009 Second Team All-Centennial Conference. Finished the season with four goals and two assists and had the highest shooting percentage (.444) for the Garnet.

Men’s Soccer

Micah Rose ’12 (Williston, VT/Champlain Valley Union)

The sophomore midfielder started all twenty games for the Garnet, helping the Sweet-16 bound team with three goals and two assists.

Women’s Soccer

Monica Cody ’10 (Torrance, CA/Marymount)

The senior midfielder helped the Women’s soccer squad to a third straight ECAC title.

Volleyball

Sarah Lambert '11(Beaver Falls, PA/Blackhawk)

The Junior outside hitter was amongst the top of the Centennial in service aces (48), aiding the Garnet to the best year in Swarthmore volleyball’s history.

Garnet Men Basketball Preview

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The 2009-2010 edition of the Garnet should be much improved over last year (3-21 overall, 2-16 conference,) when they suffered from a numbers problem and lack of experience, exacerbated by an unusual rash of injuries and sickness.  The loss of its only senior, center Raul Ordonez, will certainly be felt.  He finished in the top ten in the Centennial Conference in both scoring (12.7 ppg.) and rebounding (8.3 rpg.), and tied the Swarthmore single-season record of taking charges (22). But the return of four starters and a promising group of freshmen have the Garnet thinking improvement in 2009-10.
