Freshman Will Gates Nets 18, but Garnet Fall to Kenyon 71-56 in Equinox Classic
HAVERFORD, Pa. - Freshman Will Gates - playing in just his second game at Swarthmore College - scored a team-high 18 points, but it was not enough for the Garnet (0-2), who fell to Kenyon College 71-56 in the second game of the 18th Annual Equinox Classic from Gooding Arena at Haverford College on Saturday afternoon.
For his efforts, Gates was named the to Equinox Classic All-Tournament team.
J.T. Knight scored a game-high of 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Lords (1-2), while Dave Knapke added 17 points for the victors.
For the second consecutive game, the Garnet fought hard and were competitive for all 40 minutes, but could never quite get within striking distance of the Lords. Keyed by a 14-0 run early in the first half, the Lords built a comfortable lead with the Garnet unable to mount any kind of rally - never getting closer than eights points of the Lords in the second half.
Senior captain Matt Allen added 10 points for the Garnet, while junior Ryan Carmichael added five points and three blocks. Freshmen stood out once again for Swat, as guard Jordan Martinez pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Poor shooting doomed the Garnet once again, as Swarthmore finished shooting just 26% from the field and 3-of-13 from beyond the arc. The Lords finished shooting 46% for the game.
Swarthmore returns to action on Tuesday, November 24 when the Garnet travel to Arcadia in a non-conference battle.
