Fighting Scots Charge Past Garnet

March 10th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa.-- Visiting Wooster scored four goals in the second half to defeat Swarthmore 9-6 in non-conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Clothier Stadium.  The Fighting Scots improve to 3-0 on the season while the Garnet drop to 1-1.

Sophomore Tim Lee scored two goals in the first 5:37 of the final period--the first an unassisted shot from the left wing, and the second coming on an extra-man opportunity at 9:51.  Wooster senior attack Hisham Hassan followed with one of his two goals 59 second later, finishing off a pass from sophomore Chris Gatsch at 8:52 to give the visitors a commanding 8-5 lead.

Swarthmore's Will Predun '09 had a goal and an assist while Jay Charles '07, Todd Friedman '09, Kyle Wilson '09, Ryan McKenna '07 and Gavin Musynske '10 all scored goals for Swarthmore.

Hassan led Wooster with two goals and two assists while sophomores Lee and Mark Weschler also scored twice.  Senior Chris Vaccaro and Gatsch added a goal and an assist apiece for the Fighting Scots.

Mark Beister made 19 saves in goal for Wooster while Garnet goalie Frank Mazzucco made eight stops on the afternoon.

Swarthmore lit the lamp at the onset of the contest when captain Charles notched his first goal of the season at 13:26.  The midfielder made a cut to the left side of the net and cashed in a pass from sophomore Stelios Wilson.  The action began to see-saw as Hassan put Wooster on the board with his first goal of the day at 11:24.  Swarthmore came back with Wilson's first career goal, an unassisted shot to the lower right side of the cage, at 1:04.  The Fighting Scots tied the score at 2-2 with five seconds left in the first period, as Hassan lofted a pass over the top of the cage which Vaccaro one-timed into the net.

The Garnet scored the lone goal of the second period at 6:09--Predun took an outlet pass from the Swarthmore defense and streaked down the field.  The sophomore continued undeterred to the front of the Wooster net and dished off to Musynske, who beat Biester on the left shelf for his collegiate goal.  The Garnet held the 3-2 lead into the intermission.

Swarthmore controlled play early in the third period, and Musynske and Friedman each got good shots off, but Biester stopped both, keeping the Garnet lead at one.  Finally, with just over nine minutes to go, Gatsch ran the ball over to the right wing and shot the equalizer just to Mazzucco's left and into the goal.  Soon, the Scots took a 4-3 lead when, after a Swarthmore penalty, Ben Abbott took a Hassan feed just inside the yellow line and launched the ball straight into the net.

The Wooster lead proved to be short-lived.  Swarthmore won the ensuing face-off, and soon Friedman had the ball to the right of the goal with one man to beat.  The sophomore juked the defender right off his feet, took a few steps, and put it home.  A few minutes later, Predun bounced a shot over Biester's stick and into the top of the net, putting Swarthmore back on top at 5-4 with 40 seconds to go, but the Scots stormed back, tying the score with five seconds left when, off of a dead ball, Vaccarro lobbed the ball over the net to Weschler, who put it home for the 5-all tie.

The Garnet held a 38-21 shot advantage and collected 23 groundballs to 20 for the Fighting Scots, but were hurt by seven Wooster extra-man opportunities (two of which the Scots scored on).  The Garnet won nine of the 17 face-offs with Charles going 4-of-8, Friedman 3-of-7, and Adam Miller '08 2-of-2.  John McVarish took all of the face-offs for Wooster, winning 8-of-17.

Swarthmore travels to New Haven, Conn. for its next game, a 12:00 p.m. contest against Amherst on the campus of Yale University.  The Garnet return home on Wed., March 21 for a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference contest with Urinus.

Kramer teamed up with Young Lou of Boston University in the mixed doubles draw; the pair advanced to the semifinals.

The state title completes Swarthmore's regular season.  Kramer and Cherk will make a trip to the 2007 National Collegiate Badminton Championships will be held at the University of California at Berkeley on March 24-25.

Mazzucco Named CC Defensive Player of the Week

March 6th, 2007

LANCASTER, Pa. -- Swarthmore junior goalkeeper Frank Mazzucco (Redding, CT / Joel Barlow) has been named the Centennial Conference's first Defensive Player of the Week of the 2007 season.

Mazzucco, a team captain, made a number of tough saves in the Garnet's 5-4 double-overtime victory over Goucher College on Saturday, March 3, keeping the game close until the Garnet offense rallied to tie the match with three goals in the final 15:04 of regulation.  The junior made a pair of saves in overtime before Swarthmore freshman Tyler Bradshaw scored the game-winner with 0:31 left in the second overtime period.  The win was Swarthmore's second straight multiple-overtime win over the Gophers.

For the afternoon, Mazzucco made 14 saves in 18 attempts and grabbed a ground ball while facing a total of 38 shots.  His .778 save percentage is tops in the Centennial.

Mazzucco is the first Garnet player to win Player of the Week honors since Andy Place '96 earned the same award for the week ending on March 25, 1996.  2007 is the first season in which the conference has awarded separate offensive and defensive POW awards.

Mazzucco and the Garnet play at Drew University on Wed, March 7 and return home to face the College of Wooster on Sat., March 10 before traveling to Yale University in New Haven, Conn. to face Amherst College on Sat., March 17.  It will be a homecoming of sorts for Mazzucco and three teammates, who also hail from Connecticut.

Bradshaw Completes Comeback for Garnet

March 3rd, 2007

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Freshman attack Tyler Bradshaw's first collegiate goal concluded another exciting chapter in the Swarthmore/Goucher men's lacrosse rivalry, lifting the hometown Garnet to a 5-4 season-opening comeback win in double overtime at blustery Clothier Field Saturday afternoon.

Swarthmore's game-winner started in its own defensive end when sophomore Jacob Metzger knocked the ball free from the stick of Goucher's Brian Hoge.  Garnet midfielder Todd Friedman '09, seemingly in the middle of every big hit on Saturday, picked up the loose ball with 33 second left in the second overtime and streaked into the Swarthmore offensive zone.  Friedman appeared determined to reach the goal and three Gopher defenders step up to stop his momentum, leaving Bradshaw open on the far post.  Friedman dumped the ball to Bradshaw who one-timed the ball over the shoulder of Goucher goalie Austin Main, setting off a large celebration by the Garnet faithful.

It is the third time the Gophers (0-2) and Swarthmore (1-0) have gone to extra time in the past five seasons.  Current Garnet captain Jay Charles netted a game-winner in Towson, Md. in 2006 to propel Swarthmore to an 8-7 victory in the third overtime in the most recent affair.

The Garnet were in a hole early as Goucher took a 2-0 lead after the first period.  Ross Nochumowitz scored the Gophers' first goal off a feed from Dam Flamholz at 14:12 and Dave Duff put up an unassisted score with 12 seconds remaining.

Garnet junior attack Chris Harman put the home team on the board at 11:33 in the second period, finishing off a pass from sophomore Will Predun.  The Gophers assumed a 3-1 lead at the intermission when Flamholz scored his first goal of the season at 2:38.  The visitors extended the lead out to three goals when Alan Tiet put home his second goal after receiving an offering from Sam Fitzpatrick at 4:20 in the third period.

Swarthmore began its comeback at the end of the third period as Bradshaw lofted a pass to sophomore Stelios Wilson in front of the Gophers' cage.  Wilson out-leaped a Goucher defender and slam-dunked the ball into the net with four seconds remaining in the period.

The Garnet energy continued to build in the fourth period; senior Ryan McKenna scored right out of a Swarthmore time-out off an assist from Ben Young '09 at 11:20 and classmate Gavin Nurick tied the game at 4-4 with his first goal of the season at 1:31.

The two teams traded great scoring chances at the start of the first overtime, but Main and Swarthmore netminder Frank Mazzucco '08 made a pair of saves to preserve the tie.  Mazzucco finished the afternoon with 14 saves while Main tallied 11 stops for the Gophers.

Goucher dominated the face-offs as Jerod Richardson won 10 of 13 for the Gophers.  Goucher also led in the shot category 38-34 while the Garnet picked up 24 ground balls to Goucher's 21.

Swarthmore continues its non-conference slate on Wednesday, March 7 with a 7:00 p.m. game at Drew University.  The Garnet return home on Saturday, March 10 for a 1:00 p.m. contest with the College of Wooster.

2007 Season Preview

February 27th, 2007

CENTENNIAL CONFERENCE COACHES PRE-SEASON POLL

The Swarthmore women's lacrosse team has good reason to be excited for the 2007 season, following the best performance in program history during the 2006 campaign.

The Garnet set a school record for wins in a season with 14 and qualified for the Centennial Conference playoffs for the first time. The 2007 team looks get off to a fast start, echoing the 8-0 start last year, which included winning the championship trophy at the 2006 Seven Sisters' Tournament held right here at Swarthmore. The loss of a strong senior class will be the first obstacle for the Garnet women to overcome, yet head Karen Borbee's squad returns several established veterans in the midfield as well as a collection youthful impact players on defense.

Two-time All-Centennial selection Lindsay Roth '07 leads the Swarthmore offensive attack.

Senior captain and midfielder Lindsay Roth returns to lead a Swarthmore attack that tallied 213 goals in 2006, fifth-best in the Conference.  Roth, a two-time All-Centennial performer, scored 30 or more goals in three consecutive seasons.  At the end of the 2006 season, Roth became the 12th player in the program's history to reach the 100-goal milestone while making second-team All-Centennial. Roth was second on the team with 45 ground balls and third in points (38) and goals (31).  She also scored 17 goals in Centennial action—tops on the team.

Swarthmore's X-factor is the hustle and grit of junior midfielder Megan Sanborn, the team's leader in draw controls (54), assists (11) and caused turnovers (33) in 2006.  Sanborn was named Most Valuable Player of the 15th annual Seven Sisters Lacrosse Championship after scoring a goal and causing five turnovers in 11-8 Garnet championship game win over Wellesley (Ma.) on March 19.  She was subsequently named Centennial Conference Player of the Week after tallying five goals, nine draws, and seven caused turnovers in three games.  Look for the Garnet good fortunes to begin with Sanborn holding the ball in her pocket.

The Garnet got a career-best performance from senior captain Catherine Crawford in 2006.  The speedy midfielder tied for the team-lead with 35 goals (double her previous career-high), finishing 11th in the Centennial with 1.94 scores per game.  Her game-winning goal at McDaniel on March 25 completed 16-15 comeback win for Swarthmore.  Crawford netted four goals in two separate games, led the team with eight free-position scores, and was tied for third with seven assists—she will be looked to provide more of the same offensive fireworks in 2007.  Fellow captain Athena Samaras '07 was also one of eight Garnet women to score at least 10 goals, registering a career-high 17 scores while making 18 starts in the midfield.

Midfielder Anna de Regt '09 tied for the team-lead with 35 goals in 2006.

Swarthmore freshman Anna de Regt was viable spark of the bench in 2006, leading the squad in points despite starting only four games. Her 35 goals tied Crawford for the team lead and her eight assists were good for second-best. De Regt, a midfielder, is very accurate with the ball, led the 2006 team in shot percentage (.455) while putting almost 64% of her shots on net.  Her goals came in bunches, scoring five goals on three different occasions—at Widener on March 30, vs. Bryn Mawr on April 11 and against Rosemont on April 25.

The Swarthmore defense ranked fourth in goals-against average in 2006 and took quite a hit from graduation, losing two seniors including All-Region and three-time All-Centennial defender Cara Tigue and fellow captain Chole Lewis (team-high with 56 ground balls in 2006).  The 2007 Garnet defense looks to sophomore Melissa Grigsby to take Tigue's place as the number-one lockdown defender and senior captain Paige Gentry (third on team with 45 ground balls) to provide a consistent force in front of junior goalie Susannah Blair.  Blair finished fourth in the Centennial with a 9.14 goals-against average while posting one of only two shutouts in the Conference—a 14-0 victory over Elms in the opening round of the Seven Sisters Championship on March 18.

The 2007 season begins at Rosemont at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3. The first Swarthmore home game will be on March 22 when defending Centennial champion and pre-season #2-rankedt Gettysburg visits Clothier Field for a 5:00 p.m. contest.

#16 Garnet Blow Past NYU

February 25th, 2007

COMPLETE MATCH RESULTS

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Garnet women's tennis team hosted NYU at the Mullan Center Saturday in their inaugural match-up of the 2007 spring season. Swarthmore (1-0) etched in their first win with a 7-2 victory over the Violets (3-3)--seniors Sonya Reynolds and Sara Sargent, and freshman Rachel Wallwork led Swarthmore, each reeling in wins in singles and doubles action.

Reynolds, ranked sixth in the Atlantic South region, battled the Violets' Stephanie Tu to a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles. Reynolds chased down every shot and forced her opponent to commit innumerable errors. The highlight of the match-up came when she sprinted from the baseline after a tough corner shot to hit a running volley.

Reynolds' doubles play was just as solid, pairing up with Sargent to defeat NYU's Erika Olson and Katie Lee 8-5 at No.1 doubles. Reynolds and Sargent are the second-ranked doubles' pair in the region and earned All-America status after winning the Wilson ITA Southeast Regional in September.

Sargent survived an up-and-down match at No. 4 singles, besting Lee 6-4, 4-6 (10-5).

A heavy forehand and cool composure granted Wallwork a swift 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles over NYU's Maggie Smith. Hitting beautiful shots down the line and dishing out forced errors illustrated that she is a force to be reckoned with in her first year.  Wallwork teamed up with Waverly Lutz '07 to down NYU's Jaclyn Manning and Bianca Nicoletti 8-1 in No. 3 doubles.

Swarthmore sophomore Jennie Park showed unrelenting effort as she rallied back from a 4-2 deficit in the first set to take the No. 2 singles match 6-4, 7-5 from NYU's Erika Olson--securing the Garnet victory.  Jamie Midyette '08 tallied Swarthmore other win, coming back after dropping the first set to defeat Manning 3-6, 6-1 (10-3).

The Garnet will see their next action during Spring Break, traveling to Claremont, Calif. to contest against Claremont College, Carnegie Mellon, and University of the South. Swarthmore will put its 30-match Centennial Conference win streak on the line on Saturday, March 21 at 3:30 p.m. when they travel just around the corner to Bryn Mawr.
