Sanborn, Schaffer Pace Garnet Past Greyhounds 19-8
BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Swarthmore midfielders Megan Sanborn '08 and Marissa Schaffer '09 scored four goals apiece and senior captain Catherine Crawford added five points as the Garnet opened the 2007 season with a resounding 19-8 win at Moravian Saturday afternoon.
Schaffer scored the first goal of the afternoon off a pass from freshman Alex Gilbert-Bono at 4:59 as Swarthmore scored six of the first seven goals. Senior attack Athena Samaras put in a free-position score, her second on the day, to give the visitors the 6-1 at the 16:22 mark. Swarthmore out-shot the Greyhounds 27-9 in the first 30 minutes, holding a commanding 11-4 lead at the intermission.
The second half began with more Garnet fireworks—Swarthmore put up for more scores, two from Schaffer and one apiece from Sanborn and Crawford, in the first 4:15 to extend their lead to 15-4.
Crawford finished the afternoon with three goals and two assists while Schaffer set a career-high with the four goals. Sanborn added four draw controls, two caused turnovers and two assists to her four goals while sophomore Anna de Regt contributed three goals.
Garnet goalie Susannah Blair made three saves in just under 35 minutes of action while freshman Allison Grein notched six saves in a relief of Blair.
The Garnet (1-0) out-shot the Greyhounds (0-1) 39-23 on the afternoon while collecting 26 ground balls to Moravian's 19.
Swarthmore will head to Colorado this week for their annual spring break trip. The Garnet open up the week with a 2:00 p.m. contest against the University of Dallas at Colorado College on Tues., March 13. Swarthmore takes on host Colorado College on Thursday, March 15 at 2:00 p.m. before concluding the trip with a 2:00 p.m. game at Regis College on Saturday, March 17.
