Garnet Second-Half Comeback Falls Short

April 8th, 2007

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Swarthmore women's lacrosse team rallied from a five-goal deficit in the second half, but fell short in their comeback attempt as visiting McDaniel won 9-8 in Centennial Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at chilly Clothier Field.

The Green Terror (8-2 overall, 2-2 CC) held an 8-3 lead after junior attack Kerrie Wuenschel scored her second goal of the afternoon with 26:33 left in the second half.  Swarthmore picked up two quick goals, one from junior midfielder Megan Sanborn and the other from sophomore midfielder Anna de Regt, to cut the deficit to 8-5 with 21:53 left.

The two teams went the next 15 minutes without a score before Garnet sophomore Marissa Schaffer finished off a pass from de Regt on a free-position opportunity.  Schaffer one-timed the ball over the shoulder of Terror backup goaltender Sarah White for her team-leading 27th goal of the season.

Green Terror attack Jennifer Stone tallied her second score of the afternoon at 6:03, giving McDaniel a 9-6 lead.  Swarthmore pressed hard to pull the come-back off (in 2006 Swarthmore rallied down five goals to defeat McDaniel in Westminster, Md.) as de Regt scored her second goal—a free-position score with 4:54 left.  The final Garnet score came at 1:22 when freshman Abbe Muller found classmate Alex Gilbert-Bono in front of the net.  It was Gilbert-Bono's 18th goal of the season.

McDaniel won the ensuing draw control, running valuable time of the clock and forced a final Swarthmore turnover to claim the victory.

Swarthmore senior Lindsay Roth, Schaffer, and de Regt all had two scores for the Garnet.  Freshman goalie Allison Grein made seven saves in her first collegiate start.

Stone, Wuenschel, and Erinn Hopkins scored two goals apiece for McDaniel while Meagan Mattson tallied two assists.   Megan Millhausen made four saves in goal during the first half while White made ten saves in final 30 minutes.

Swarthmore held a 29-20 shot advantage, including an 18-7 margin in the second half and edged out the Green Terror in the draw control category (10-9).

Swarthmore will play consecutive home games for the first time in 2007, facing off against Washington College in Centennial Conference action on Tuesday, April 10 at 7:00 p.m.

Resilient Garnet Fall in Overtime

April 8th, 2007

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- McDaniel's Brad Baer scored the game-winning goal with 1:59 to go in the overtime period to lift the visiting Terror to a 7-6 win over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.

Swarthmore (4-4, 2-3 CC) controlled play for a large part of the game, and went into the fourth quarter up two goals before McDaniel (6-3, 1-2 CC) came on strong, scoring three goals in the period to reclaim the lead at 6-5.

The last minute of the game was a crazy one, with sticks and bodies flying as Swarthmore desperately tried to get the ball back from the McDaniel attack. Garnet goalkeeper Frank Mazzucco '08 stuffed a Terror shot with an impressive save in the last minute to keep the Garnet within striking distance.

Swarthmore's Ben Young '09 was called for a pushing penalty with 0:23 remaining in the game and the Garnet were a man down before McDaniel was called for a delay of game, a penalty which not only evened the sides but gave the Garnet the ball back.

Swarthmore took advantage of this final possession, as midfielder Ryan McKenna '07 found attack Stelios Wilson '09 and Wilson put the ball away to send the game into overtime. Although Swarthmore's Adam Miller '08 won the face-off to start overtime, McDaniel got the ball back and was able to convert to hand the Garnet a heartbreaking loss.

McKenna led the Garnet offense with three points on two assists and a goal.  Sophomore attack Kyle Wilson scored his team-leading thirteenth goal of the season, and also registered an assist.  Todd Freidman '09, Will Predun '09, and Gavin Musynske '10 also had goals for Swarthmore.

Mazzucco continued to impress in net, and recorded fourteen saves in the losing effort. He also picked up five ground balls.

Swarthmore begins the toughest stretch of their schedule when they travel to Chestertown, MD on Wednesday to face off against Washington College in a Centennial Conference match-up. Three of the Garnet's next four opponents are currently ranked in the top-20 nationally: Washington currently stands at #11, Gettysburg at #3, and Haverford is #15.

Garnet Deal with the Devils, Split with Dickinson

April 8th, 2007

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Garnet freshman Kathryn Riley continued to dazzle, smacking her team-leading third home run of the season and picking up her fifth victory on a chilly Saturday afternoon as Swarthmore began Centennial Conference play at Clothier Fields. The Garnet split a doubleheader with the Red Devils of Dickinson College, losing 10-2 in the first contest but rebounding with a 3-2 victory in the nightcap.

The Garnet (11-7, 1-1 CC) found offense early in the first contest, as Riley hit a towering shot over the right-centerfield fence in the first inning to give the Garnet an early lead.

Sophomore hurler Alexandra Zelaski (3-2) took the loss for the Garnet, surrendering six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Zelaski appeared to be cruising early in the game, until the Dickinson bats got to her in the third inning. With one out, nine consecutive Red Devil batters reached base safely, as they were able to string together five consecutive singles to start the rally. After six runs had already crossed the plate, Marianne Klingaman '07 entered the game, yielding two more runs on a double by junior catcher Theresa Souza. When the dust cleared, the Red Devils had pieced together an eight-run inning on nine hits, including two 2-RBI doubles.

Dickinson (8-9, 1-3 CC) tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning when Devils' freshman starter Allison Jordan helped herself even more with a two-run home run, giving the Red Devils a 10-1 lead. Klingaman finished the game giving up four runs on three hits and two walks in 2.2 innings of relief duty.

That run support was all Jordan (5-4) needed for the complete-game victory. The only Garnet threat came in the fourth inning. Following a one-out walk by Katherine Gold '08, senior Kelly Siano singled to left and Kristin Caspar '09 singled to centerfield, knocking in Gold. Besides Riley's home run, these were the only other hits that the Garnet bats could muster against Jordan in the first contest.

Jordan finished the game only surrendering two runs on three hits, registering five strikeouts in the process. At the plate, Jordan was two-for-three with a single, home run, two RBIs, and two runs scored. Senior infielder Alex Speace also led the Dickinson offensive attack, going two-for-two with an RBI single, double, walk, and a run scored.

The tides turned in the day's second contest, though, as the Garnet pulled out a 3-2 victory in a pitcher's duel with Riley coming out on top.

As in Game 1, the Garnet took an early lead in the contest. In the bottom of the first inning, the first five batters in the Garnet lineup reached base. Sophomore centerfielder Lauren Walker led off the game with a walk, advancing to second on a single by Ashley Brandt '07 and to third on an errant throw. After Riley walked, Christine Sendelsky '09 was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, bringing in Walker. Gold followed with an RBI single to centerfield, scoring Brandt to cap off a two-run opening frame.

The Red Devils chipped away at the Garnet lead with a run in the fourth inning. Junior Kaitlyn McDonaldled off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch, to third on a sacrifice bunt by first baseman Lisa Biddle, and scored on a fielding error.

Dickinson tied the game up in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Speace, scoring Eve Massa'08 who had led the inning off with a single.

The Garnet kept the game tied at two with a clutch defensive play in the sixth inning. After a lead-off single by Biddle to centerfield, Jordan smoked a line drive. Senior third baseman Melissa LaVan snagged the shot, though, and turned the solid play into a gem when she fired the ball to second to get the snoozing Biddle out on a double play.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Garnet took the lead. Following a single to leftfield by freshman catcher Michele Perch, Caspar followed with a sacrifice bunt, advancing pinch-runner Monica Cody '10 to second. An infield single by LaVan found a hole in the Dickinson defense, scoring Cody on the play.

This run proved to be the difference, as Riley put down the Dickinson batters in order in the seventh to secure the one-run victory for the Garnet. Riley (5-0) finished the contest surrendering two runs on five hits, with five strikeouts. She remains unbeaten this season, yielding an impressive 0.74 ERA.

Riley also continues to lead the Garnet offensively, going two-for-five with a single, home run, walk, and RBI on the day. Gold and Caspar both finished the day one-for-four at the plate with RBI singles.

These contests begin a stretch in which the Garnet will play eight Centennial Conference games in seven days, including games against perennial playoff contenders Muhlenberg, Ursinus, and Gettysburg. Swarthmore will begin this difficult stretch with a doubleheader against Muhlenberg at Clothier Fields scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m., seeking to avenge a sweep by the Mules last year in Allentown.

#10 Eagles Edge #14 Swarthmore

April 7th, 2007

MATCH RESULTS

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  -- The 14th-ranked Swarthmore women's tennis team came up just short in their attempt to knock off another nationally-ranked opponent in the Atlantic South region.  This time it was the No. 10 University of Mary Washington Eagles that came on to campus and left with a 5-4 victory Friday afternoon at the Michael Mullan Tennis Center.

The Garnet (6-4 overall) picked up a 2-1 lead after the doubles' competition; Waverly Lutz '07 and Rachel Wallwork '10 picked up their third win in a row, defeating UMW's Katie Miglin and Natalia Fugate (the 13th-ranked pair in the region) 9-7 at No. 2 while Marissa Matthews '07 and Erica Lukoski '08 won 8-3 at No. 3 over Amy Sheetz and Priscilla Jamison.

Swarthmore increased its lead to 4-2 after the first round of singles play—only three matches could take place at once as the cold weather outside forced the action to the indoor courts.  Garnet senior Sonya Reyonlds, the fifth-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South, defeated Stephanie Kurti (ranked 18th regionally) 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 in No. 1 singles.  Wallwork, the 29th-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South, picked up her third victory over a regionally-ranked opponent, fighting past Miglin 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2.

The Eagles (12-2) rallied to win the final three singles matches to remain undefeated in away matches.

Swarthmore was scheduled to play Centennial-opponent McDaniel on Saturday, April 7 but forecasted cold weather has forced the match to be re-scheduled for April 22 in Westminster, Md.  The Garnet will take the week off to prepare for Centennial-rival Muhlenberg College—the two schools will face off in Allentown, Pa. on April 14 at 12:00 p.m.

Garnet Women Run Away from Bears

April 5th, 2007

MATCH RESULTS

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  -- The 14th ranked Garnet (6-3, 4-1 CC) dominated their afternoon match-up against the Ursinus Bears (2-7, 1-3 CC), clinching a 9-0 victory. Regionally-ranked players Sara Sargent '07 and Waverly Lutz '07 reeled in wins in both doubles and singles, as did Jamie Midyette '08, Marissa Lee '09, Rebecca Commito '10, and Kearney Bangs '10.

At No.1 doubles, Lutz and Sonya Reynolds '07 thrashed Ursinus' Jenna Hope and Jill Alspach, by a score of 8-0. Midyette and Lee displayed similar skill as they took the No. 2 doubles by the count 8-1. Freshman pair Commito and Bangs claimed the No.3 doubles match with a commanding 8-3 finish.

In single's action, Sargent's quick, smart tennis bought her a 6-0, 6-0 victory, as she failed to give up a single game. Lutz, Midyette, Lee, Commito, and Bangs all played impressive tennis, as they managed to cede a mere seven games collectively.

The Garnet will take a break from conference action and host #10 Mary Washington on Frirday, April 6. The match will commence at 3:00 p.m.

Frank is Mazz-nificant, Garnet Beat Seahawks

April 4th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- The Garnet defense, led by junior captain Frank Mazzuco's 18 saves, controlled the action and sophomore attack Kyle Wilson provided the necessary offense as Swarthmore defeated visiting St. Mary's College (MD) in a thrilling 5-4 victory. Wilson scored his team-leading twelfth goal with just 0:23 remaining in the fourth quarter to lift the Garnet over the Seahawks in a non-conference men's lacrosse action Tuesday night at Clothier Field.

St. Mary's (7-4, 3-2 CAC) jumped out to an early lead, scoring two goals in the first quarter before Wilson put Swarthmore (4-3, 2-2 CC) on the board with his first goal of the evening early in the second. Seahawks attack Pat Oliphart countered with a goal just over two minutes later, before Swarthmore stormed back to tie the score before the half. Chris Harman '08 tallied his second goal of the season to cut the lead to 3-2, and defenseman Drew Bonessa '08 cut his way through the St. Mary's defense to score a fast break goal with just 47 second remaining in the half.

The third quarter featured little offense as both teams' defense locked down. Mazzuco made eight saves in the period, as St. Mary's midfielder Stu Wright scored with 2:10 remaining in the quarter to give the Seahawaks the lead going into the fourth.

Todd Freidman '09 scored his second goal of the season to tie the game with just over nine minutes left.  The game looked as if it might go into overtime, with both teams struggling to find any offensive punch, before Wilson took his man to the net and scored to win it for Swarthmore.

Mazzuco's 18 stops is the second-best in his career (he made 20 stops vs. Goucher on March 5, 2005). Junior defenseman Dan Sartori caused three Seahawk turnovers and picked up three ground balls.

The Garnet return to action Saturday afternoon when they face McDaniel in a key Centennial Conference match-up. The game, which will be played on Clothier Field, is scheduled to start at 12:00 p.m with the Swarthmore women's lacrosse team facing off against McDaniel at 3:00 in the second game of a doubleheader.

Sweet Marissa Flies Garnet Past Eagles

April 4th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

ST. DAVID'S, Pa. -- Sophomore Marissa Schaffer scored four goals and Swarthmore held off a late rally by the Eastern Eagles to earn a gritty 13-11 road victory.  The Garnet snapped a two-game skid with the win and improve to 6-5 on the season.

Swarthmore led 13-8 with 6:12 to play after Schaffer converted a Katie Crawford '07 feed.  Eastern scored with 4:17 remaining to cut the lead to four, and found the back of the net twice in rapid succession with 1:36 and 0:55 remaining but came up two goals short.

Eastern scored two of the game's first three goals before the Garnet ripped off three straight in a span of 3:27, with senior Lindsay Roth notching two of the tallies and assisting freshman Abbe Muller on the other.  The game then went scoreless for over six minutes before Eastern went on a run of their own, scoring four straight to take a 6-4 lead.  Kate Hoy, the Eagle scoring leader, picked up her 27th and 28th goals of the year during the stretch.  Swarthmore regrouped and tied the score before halftime when Megan Sanborn '08 found Roth for a goal with 1:22 remaining and, just nine seconds later, Muller put home a feed from fellow first-year Alex Gilbert-Bono.

Eastern neutralized any momentum Swarthmore may have had coming out of the break, and the second half was scoreless for the first five minutes.  Finally, Crawford put the Garnet back on top with an unassisted goal with 24:40 to go.  Amy Norman scored for Eastern to re-tie the score, and Swarthmore junior netminder Susannah Blair was injured on the play and had to leave the game in favor of first-year Allison Grein.

There was no reason to panic, though, as Grein allowed just one goal in her first 19 minutes of action, and Schaffer came up with consecutive goals to put the Garnet ahead for good.  Gilbert-Bono assisted on the second of those tallies, which came with 18:53 showing on the clock.  Hoy scored her fourth goal of the game to cut the lead to 9-8, but Swarthmore then went on a game-deciding run.

Just 30 seconds after Hoy's goal, the Garnet again flashed their quick-strike prowess when Sanborn scored without an assist.  54 seconds later, Gilbert-Bono picked up her third assist of the game by finding senior Athena Samaras.  Sanborn picked up another goal before Schaffer extended the lead to 13-8.

Eastern rallied to score the game's final three goals, with Hoy picking up her fifth score of the game and 30th of the season along the way, but the five-goal lead was too much to overcome.

Grein acquitted herself well in emergency duty, making six saves in 22:12 of action.  Since she entered with the game tied at 7-7, the first-year picked up her first collegiate victory.  Blair made six saves in the first 37:48.

In addition to Schaffer's four goals, Swarthmore was led on offense by Roth's three scores.  It was a breakout game for Roth, a 2006 all-Centennial Conference selection who has been slowed by injury through much of 2007.

Sanborn and Muller put home two goals apiece, while Gilbert-Bono's three assists were a team high.

Senior Paige Gentry led the Garnet defense with six ground balls and four caused turnovers.  Junior Abigail Fischer was right behind with five GB's and three CT's off the bench.

Jenn Van Ness made 13 saves in goal for the Eagles.

Swarthmore will now get ready for a key Centennial Conference match-up on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Stadium; McDaniel comes to town for a 3:00 p.m. match. The Green Terror are ranked #14 in Division III, but fell to the Garnet 16-15 in a thriller last March 25th.

Swarthmore Silences Ramblers

April 4th, 2007

GAME ONE BOX

GAME TWO BOX

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  -- Garnet freshman Kathryn Riley had two hits and four RBIs while classmate Michele Perch scored three runs as Swarthmore hit the double-digit victory total by sweeping Rosemont in non-conference softball action Tuesday afternoon at Clothier Fields.

The Garnet (10-6 overall) scored five times in the fifth to edge the Ramblers 7-5 in game one and then rode junior pitcher Emily Walz to a 6-2 win in the second game.

In game one, Swarthmore picked up two early runs for senior starter Marianne Klingaman, using two hits and two Rosemont errors to take the 2-0 lead.  Sophomore outfielder Lauren Walker reached on a miscue by the Ramblers third baseman and immediately stole second.  Perch lined a rocket off the Rosemont hurler and the Ramblers infield threw the ball away, allowing Walker to cross with the game's first run.  Perch, who went to second on the error, moved to third on sophomore Christine Sendeslky's line drive and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Sophomore left fielder Kristin Caspar made a spectacular diving catch to lead off the second, taking away a drive by Alicia Clayton.

The Ramblers came back to tie the game in the top of the third, as Janelle Clark and Anne Blessington came around to score on Jess Stefanik's two-out single to left.

The Garnet exploded for five runs in the decisive fifth inning to build a 7-2 advantage.  Senior Julie Monaghan led off the inning with a single and after two Ramblers errors, scored on Walker's sacrifice fly to centerfield.  Perch walked to load the bases up again and Riley brought home two runs with a single to right.  Sendelsky followed with an RBI ground out to make it 6-2 before shortstop Katherine Gold '08 lined a single to center, plating Riley with Swarthmore's seventh run.

Klingaman struggled with her command in the seventh, loading the bases after hitting two Ramblers and Sharyn Cieszynski singled in a run for Rosemont to make it 7-3 Swarthmore.  Gold charged a slow moving grounder by Stefanik and cut down the lead runner at the plate for the second out.  With the bases still loaded, a wild pitch brought in one run and a throwing error by Swarthmore allowed Cieszynski to score as well.  Klingaman induced Clayton pop out to Riley to seal the win for the Garnet.

Klingaman (1-3) struck out five batters, allowing only three earned runs, for her first win of 2007.

Monaghan led the Garnet with two hits and a run scored while Riley added a hit and two RBIs.

The Garnet benefited from a five-run second inning in the nightcap, started by senior Melissa LaVan's single to center and capped Riley's towering two-run double to left field.

Swarthmore added an insurance run in the fourth when Walker drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on Perch's single.

Walz (2-2) had it on cruise control, allowing only two runs on two hits while striking out six for the complete-game victory.

Swarthmore has double-digit wins for the fourth consecutive season and begins Centennial Conference play this Thursday, April 5 at Ursinus College.  First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
