Ursinus Chills Swarthmore
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- Ursinus starter Mike Stangroom spread five hits over seven innings and the Bears collected 20 base hits on their way to a 13-3 Centennial win over the Garnet on a chilly Friday afternoon at Clothier Fields.
The Bears (14-6 overall, 5-1 CC) got a big day from senior shortstop Tommy Herrmann, who went 3-for-5 including a home run to lead off the game. Hermann also scored three times and drove in two other runs while Brett Umstead also went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.
Swarthmore freshman Jimmy Gill led the Garnet (2-14 overall, 0-6 CC) with a double and a run scored while also striking out one in a single scoreless inning of relief on the mound. Grant Yoshitsu '09 picked up a hit for the fifth time in six games while Thomas Nakamura '10, Conor Casey '09, Kevin Kooi '09, and Wiley Archibald '10 also registered base hits for the Garnet.
Sean Varaslona '09 (1-3) took the loss for Swarthmore, allowing four earned runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings of work.
Swarthmore travels to Lancaster, Pa. on Saturday, April 7 to face defending Centennial-champion Franklin & Marshall in a 12:30 p.m. twinbill.
