Swat Swimmers Roll to Sweep of Green Terror

November 5th, 2006

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore swimmers won the first eleven events on their way to a sweep of McDaniel in the Centennial Conference opener for the Garnet on Saturday afternoon.  The Swarthmore women (2-0 overall, 1-0 CC) downed the Green Terror (1-1 overall, 1-1 CC) 117-95 while the Garnet men (2-0 overall, 1-0 CC) cruised by a score of 146-87.

Sarah Cotcamp '07 and Anne Miller '10 each brought in four winners for the Garnet women while Franny Zhang '08 and Allie Jordan '09 captured three events apiece - Swarthmore clinched the victory after Cotcamp (57.67) and Claire Shelden '10 (1:00.62) took the top two spots in the 100 yard freestyle.  The Garnet women swam the remaining events in exhibition.

The Swarthmore men also enjoyed success in the pool this afternoon -  sophomore Stephen Shymon was the first to touch in the 200 yard freestyle, the 200 yard backstroke, and the 200 yard medley while classmate Douglas Gilchrist-Scott took top honors in the 100 backstroke and swam the lead leg on the winning 200 medley relay.

The Garnet are off for a week until Centennial powerhouse Franklin & Marshall comes to Ware Pool for a 2:00 p.m. meet on Saturday, Nov. 11.

Diplomats Advance Past Garnet in CC Semifinal

November 5th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

BALTIMORE, Md.  - Franklin & Marshall forward Matt McCall scored in the 70th minute to advance the Diplomats to the Centennial Conference Championship game with a 1-0 win over third-seed Swarthmore on Saturday night at Homewood Field.

The second-seed Diplomats (13-2-3) will face top-seed Johns Hopkins for the Centennial Championship on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.  The Blue Jays advanced past semifinal opponent Gettysburg 5-3 in penalty kicks after a 1-1 through 110 minutes of action.

The F&M/Swarthmore game figured to be a low-scoring affair - six of the last eight match-ups have ended 1-0.  This match developed much the same way, remaining scoreless at halftime with the Diplomats on top in the shot-category, 4-2.

F&M finally broke the through with a goal in at 69:29 - sophomore forward Bobby Condray sent a cross to the left side of the box where McCall was all alone.  The junior forward settled the ball at his feet and beat Garnet goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe '08 on the right corner for his sixth goal of the season.

The Garnet came back down the field with a great chance in the next minute, but sophomore Ladule Lako Lo Sarah's header sailed high over the bar. Swarthmore made one final rush in the 90th minute, getting a throw-in on the left side - junior Michael Bonesteel's header among a large crowd missed the net high.

Statistically-speaking, the game was as close as it could get - both teams had eight shots with F&M taking three corners to Swarthmore's two.

Diplomats' netminder Ed Stelz made a pair of saves while Sutcliffe posted three stops for the Garnet.

Swarthmore dips to 12-5-1 overall yet stands a good chance to earn its third consecutive berth into the ECAC South Region Championship.  The selections for the 2006 edition will be made on Monday afternoon.

Maggie, Garnet Got Something To Say to You

November 4th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

BALTIMORE, Md.  - Garnet freshman midfielder Maggie DeLorme scored the only goal of the night as the Swarthmore women's soccer team advanced to its first Centennial Conference Championship game ever with a 1-0 win over second-seeded Gettysburg at Homewood Field on the campus of Johns Hopkins University on Friday night.

Swarthmore (14-3-1 overall), winners of seven in a row, will continue its magical season on Sunday, November 5, facing top-seed Johns Hopkins at 1:00 p.m. in Baltimore.  The Blue Jays won the opening semifinal 3-1 over fourth-seed Muhlenberg, getting a goal and an assist from junior Kim Lane to advance to its fifth Centennial Conference Championship match.

On this chilly evening in Charm City, the Garnet avenged a 3-2 loss at Gettysburg on Sept. 24, downing the Bullets for just the third time since 1988 (3-16-1).

The Garnet scored the game's lone goal off a well-executed corner kick in the 21st minute.  Senior Natalie Negrey put the ball in the place where DeLorme excels - the air.  The pony-tailed first-year headed in the offering inside the near post at 20:37 for a 1-0 lead.  It was DeLorme's second goal of the season and Negrey's Centennial-leading sixth assist of the year.

Swarthmore took the 1-0 lead into the intermission with the shot count knotted at five a side.

Kanuka had a great chance to add to the lead in the 52nd minute, touching the ball away from the Bullets' goalkeeper Danielle St. Pierre towards the left end line.  The freshman forward's attempt at the open net rolled along the goal line and out the other side.

The Bullets almost tied the score in the 56th minute when a long service got over the Garnet defense and Gettysburg forward Katie Myers ran onto the ball 12 yards out.  Swarthmore goalkeeper Lauren Walker met Myers at the ball and knocked the scoring attempt clear.

Kanuka had another golden opportunity in the 65th minute when her chip from 22 yards out nailed the right post.  She got loose on a breakaway in the 81st minute and tried to make a move left but St. Pierre lunged at the ball, stopping the Swarthmore scoring opportunity.  The Garnet backline thwarted a pair of Bullets corner kicks late in the match, posting the team's ninth shut-out of the year.

Walker made five saves for her seventh shutout of the season; St. Pierre posted four saves as Gettysburg slips to 12-6-1.

Swarthmore second-year coach Todd Anckaitis is the sixth Garnet head coach to win a Centennial playoff game, joining Renee Clarke (softball - 2006), Lee Wimberly (men's basketball - 1997), Karen Borbee (field hockey - 2000), Adrienne Shibles (women's basketball - 2001, '02, '05), and Jeremy Loomis (women's tennis - 2006).

The men's affair was a closer contest - super sophomore Shymon followed up the Garnet victory in the 400 medley relay with 15-second win in the 1000 freestyle (10:35.01).  Junior Andrew Frampton swam a strong final split (27.56) to catch Widener's Kevin Carson at the wall for the victory in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:49.77.

2006-07 Preview

November 1st, 2006

Coming off a third-place Centennial Conference finish in the 2005-2006 season, Swarthmore women's swimming will look to further recent success, attempting a run at the third Centennial Conference Championship in school history.  The Garnet will turn to an established set of experienced upperclassmen as well as the promise of successful showings from last year's underclassmen and five promising freshman to challenge for the Conference Championship this season.

In 2005-06, the team finished 7-4 overall and 5-2 within the conference and swam strong at the season-ending Centennial Conference Championships.  This season, the 32nd under long-time head coach Sue Davis, the team will compete in ten dual meets and one two-day tournament at Franklin & Marshall, as well as embarking on a ten-day training trip to Puerto Rico. The team concludes the regular season at the Centennial Conference Championships, hosted by Franklin & Marshall.

The Garnet will look to an experienced roster that includes seven returning Centennial Conference Championship medal winners in hopes of achieving a conference title.  Among the returning swimmers is senior standout Sarah Cotcamp.  After racking up an array of victories during the regular season, Cotcamp captured four medals at the last Conference Championship, including the bronze medal in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.05.  Teaming up with Martyna Pospierzalska '06, Michelle Hom '07, and Jennie Lewis '08, Cotcamp was able to secure the silver medal in the 200 yard medley relay by swimming the fourth fastest time in school history with a time of 1:52.40.

Joining Cotcamp as a premier swimmer in the conference are juniors Franny Zhang and Jennie Lewis. Both had numerous victories throughout the regular season as well as three medals apiece in the Conference Championship meet.  Lewis, a butterfly specialist, took home the bronze in the 100 yard butterfly at Conference Championships with a time of 1:00.14.

Zhang displayed an astonishing amount of athleticism by successfully competing in a diversity of events.  Over the course of the season, she recorded victories in events that ranged from the 100 yard butterfly to the 1000 yard freestyle.  More often than not, she would win multiple events in a meet, leading her team to seven victories over the year.  Lewis, Zhang, and Cotcamp were part of the 400 yard freestyle relay team that set the school record time of 3:37.12 back in 2005.

With one more year of experience under their belts the Swarthmore women's swimming team has a vast amount of potential and will be a force to be reckoned with this year in the conference.  The Garnet open the 2006-07 season with three consecutive home meets, beginning with a non-conference dual meet with local rival Widener on Wed., Nov. 1 at 6:30 p.m.  The Centennial Conference portion of the schedule begins on Sat., Nov. 4 when McDaniel visits Ware Pool at 2:00 p.m.

Garnet Alum Qualifies for Olympic Trials

October 31st, 2006

Swarthmore alum Marc Jeuland '01 qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials after running a 2:20:33 at the Chicago Marathon this past Sunday, October 22.  His time breaks down to an average of 5:21 per mile over the 26.2 miles.

In preparation for the marathon, Jeuland ran roughly 60 to 70 miles per week, doing one day of pace work on the track and a weekly 10-mile tempo run (at race pace), before tapering down to 45 miles in the last two weeks before the event.  Five weeks prior to the race, he worked up to a 24 mile run.  Jeuland indicates the key to his training is the weekly long run of at least 15 miles, a tribute to the style of training he did under current Swarthmore head coach Peter Carroll.  He points to Carroll's experienced coaching as where he "learned how to put together a consistent, smart, and effective training program."

While at Swarthmore, he was a two-time All-American runner, captaining the cross country, as well as the indoor and outdoor track & field teams his senior year, Jeuland was also a two-time Centennial Conference champion and holds College records in the indoor 5,000 meters and the outdoor 10,000 meters events.  Jeuland graduated from Swarthmore with a degree in Honors Engineering and a minor in Chemistry.

Currently, Jeuland is a third-year doctoral student in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  After graduation, he did Peace Corps service in Bamako, Mali, where he became interested in his current PhD research topics, looking at water and sanitation issues in developing countries and international water resources planning and managing.

Looking back at his time in Swarthmore, Jeuland remembers "that Swarthmore was the training ground that taught me how to balance competitive running and academics.  My senior year I struggled to balance honors exams and the NCAA National Championships, but the school made my participation in both possible, flying me back and forth between races and oral exams. I am very grateful for that support."

The Olympic trial will be run in New York City; the date and time have yet to be announced.

Bonesteel Named CC Offensive Player of the Week

October 30th, 2006

Lancaster, PA - Swarthmore College men's soccer midfielder Michael Bonesteel was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week on October 30.

Bonesteel, a junior, scored two goals in a 2-0 week for Swarthmore, including the game-winner in a 1-0 Garnet victory at Ursinus on Oct. 25.  The junior put in his second score of the week in a 3-0 win over Haverford in the season finale on Oct. 28, giving him four goals on the season.

Bonesteel, a mathematics and education double major, has 14 goals and six assists in his three-year career at Swarthmore, helping the Garnet win 36 games over that span.

Swarthmore concluded the 2006 season with an overall record of 12-4-1 and a 6-3 mark in the Centennial, earning the No. 3 seed in this weekend's Centennial Conference Championships - Swarthmore will take on No. 2 seed Franklin & Marshall on Nov. 4 at 7:30 p.m.  It is the third consecutive year the Garnet have accumulated a double-digit win total - the last time occurred in 1993-94-95.

Bonesteel is the second Garnet player to be recognized by the Centennial this season - junior goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5.

2006-07 Team Preview

October 30th, 2006

Coming off a third-place Centennial Conference finish in the 2005-2006 season, Swarthmore men's swimming will look to an established set of experienced upperclassmen as well as the promise of successful showings from last year's rookies to challenge for the Centennial Conference Championship this season.

In 2005-06, the team finished 4-6 overall and 4-2 within the conference and swam strong by winning six medals at the season-ending Centennial Conference Championships.  This season, head coach Sue Davis has the team competing in nine dual meets and one two-day tournament at Franklin & Marshall, as well as embarking on a 10-day training trip to Puerto Rico. The team concludes the regular season at the Centennial Conference Championships, hosted in Lancaster, Pa. by Franklin & Marshall.

Returning to lead the Garnet will be a pair of record-setting sophomores: Douglas Gilchrist-Scott and Stephen Shymon.  Gilchrist-Scott, a freestyle and backstroke sprinter, set a school record last season in the 100 freestyle at 47.67, less than a second from the national B cut time of 46.78.  He also secured the second fastest time for the 50 freestyle in school history at 21.95. At the Conference Championships he was a member of the silver medal-winning 400 medley relay team, the bronze medal-winning 200 medley team, and also won the silver in the 100 backstroke.  In 2006-07, look for Gilchrist-Scott to be a strong contributor both as an individual and in the medley relay.

Shymon is a distance specialist, setting school records in the 1650, 1000, and 500 freestyles last season with times of 16:22.47, 9:59.17, and 4:42.80, respectively.  He was able to secure a bronze medal in the 400 IM at the Centennial Conference Championships, and during the time trials, made the national B cut in the 1650 Freestyle with his school record time.

Swarthmore boasts two of the top freestyle distance swimmers in the Centennial - Shymon and junior Andrew Frampton.  Frampton took down a nine-year old mark in the 1000 freestyle (10:02.75) in 2004-05 and then shaved 11 seconds off a seven-year old record in the 1650 freestyle (16:43.60) later in the season.  Shymon has since lowered those marks, but the two are sure to lock horns in practice and at meets, pushing each other to set lower times.

Swarthmore also returns the entire 200 yard medley team consisting of Gilchrist-Scott '09, Andrew Koczo '07, Brian Roth '09, and Jon Augat '07 - the four men brought home the bronze at the CC Championships with a time of 1:38.36, a heart-beat away from a top-five time in the school record books.  The top 400 yard medley relay is also returning; Gilchrist-Scott, Koczo, Roth, and Jason Horwitz '07 combined efforts to deliver a silver medal (3:34.18) at the Championships, a mere three seconds off the lead.
