OFFICIAL ALL-CENTENNIAL RELEASE (pdf)
Lancaster, PA - Swarthmore College field hockey players Summer Spicer (Laurel, DE / Laurel), Karen Lorang (San Diego, CA / University), and Anna Baeth (Frederick, MD / Frederick) have been named to the 2006 All-Centennial Conference list. Spicer is a first-team selection while Lorang and Baeth were named to the second team, as voted on by the conference head coaches.
Spicer, a senior midfielder, started all 17 games this year and finished third on the team in points (13) after scoring four goals and handing out a team-high five assists. Spicer, an art and psychology double major, finished tied for seventh in the Centennial for assists and assists per game (0.29). Spicer was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 9 after scoring a pair of goals, one of which was the overtime game-winner, in a 3-2 upset of #19 Johns Hopkins on Oct. 4. She was also named to the Seven Sisters All-Tournament team on Sept. 17 for the second consecutive year.
Spicer, a team captain, earned second team All-Centennial honors last year as a junior. She is the 21st Swarthmore player to make first-team All-Centennial, and the first since 2001 when Katie Tarr '01 and Kim Cariello '01 were selected.
Lorang, a senior goalie, started 12 games in 2006, posting a 1.62 goals against average (GAA) and a save percentage of .793, both good for second-best in the Centennial. Lorang, an economics major and team captain, was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 5 and Oct. 2. She is one of nine Centennial field hockey players also named to the Conference Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are key performers and have a 3.40 cumulative grade point average or higher.
This is the third second-team All-Centennial honor for Lorang - she was also selected in 2003 and 2005.
Baeth, a sophomore defender, started all 17 games for Swarthmore this year leading a Swarthmore defense that was tied for third in the Centennial in goals allowed per game (1.71). Baeth, a sociology and anthropology double major, played a large role on a Garnet defense that posted three shutouts in 2006.
Swarthmore completed the 2006 season with an overall record of 9-8, including a 4-6 mark in Centennial play.
