Swarthmore Splits Meet in Gettysburg
GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Swarthmore swim teams took their undefeated Centennial records to Gettysburg and the men came home with a 113-92 win while the women suffered a 132-73 loss. Sophomore Stephen Shymon led the men with two individual wins while freshman Casey Osborn picked up a pair of victories for the women.
It is the first time since 1989 the Garnet men have defeated the Bullet men (Gettyburg has won eight of the 12 Centennial Championships).
The Garnet men (5-2 overall, 4-0 CC) won six events in their first action of the second semester. Swarthmore opened up the meet with a win in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:43.16, the best time of the season for the quartet of Douglas Gilchrist-Scott '09, Andrew Koczo '07, Brian Roth '09, and Jason Horwitz '07. Shymon picked up his win of the day in the next event, the 1000 freestyle (10:33.75), and would later out-touch teammate Andrew Frampton '08 (5:02.91) to take top honors in the 500 free style with a time of 5:02.08. Freshman Michael Ann just held off Gettysburg's Peter Levin and Frampton to win the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:51.41.
Swarthmore took one-two in the 200 backstroke as well; Gilchrist-Scott was first in a time of 2:05.38 while freshman Reid Wilkening was second at 2:10.23. Koczo won the final individual event of the day, the 200 breaststroke, with a time of 2:19.38.
Osborn highlighted the women's side, picking up back-to-back victories in the 200 IM (2:18.09) and the 200 butterfly (2:13.59). Junior Jennie Lewis followed Osborn to the wall in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:16.31. The other Garnet victory came in the 50 free, where senior Sarah Cotcamp won a showdown with Bullets' Demery Close, taking top prize with a time of 25.43.
Both teams will return to Ware Pool on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a Centennial meet with Dickinson College. The first event is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
