January 12th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa.  - Visiting Gettysburg shot 15 for 18 from the free throw line in the second half to nip Swarthmore 52-49 in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Thursday afternoon in Tarble Pavilion.

Swarthmore junior center Ian McCormick had a strong game in the post, putting up his fifth double-double of the season with a game-high 18 points and 12 rebounds.  The Seattle, Wash. native hit 6 of 8 from the line and 6 of 14 from the floor while also picking up five blocks.

Corey Dorsey led Gettysburg with 17 points, including a perfect 8 of 8 at the line, with seven rebounds and five blocks.

The Bullets (4-9 overall, 2-5 CC) blocked three Swarthmore shots in the final minute and scored on a backdoor lay-up by senior Brian Sateja with 24 seconds left.  The Garnet came up the floor looking for a quick bucket but the Bullets' Joe Speirenburg swatted another shot, his sixth of the game, and Swarthmore was forced to foul.

Gettysburg guard Dan Capkin, a 73% free throw shooter coming into the game, missed both shots with four second left and Swarthmore rushed up the floor with a chance to tie.  Speedy Garnet guard Chris Casey found Matt Kurman on the left wing - the junior took one dribble and launched from 25 feet.  Unfortunately for Swarthmore, the shot rimmed out as the horn sounded and the Bullets left campus with the win.

The Bullets clawed through a grueling first half, building an eight-point lead with 2:36 to go after a three-pointer from Corey Dorsey.  Swarthmore freshman guard Matt Allen sank an off-balance three-pointer with seconds remaining to cut Gettysburg's lead at halftime to 22-17.

Dorsey led all scorers with nine points at the break while McCormick paced the Garnet with six points.  The two teams combined to shoot just 16 for 60 (26.7%) and were dead-even on the boards with 22 apiece.

The offense picked up in the second half with Gettysburg pushing its lead back to nine, 28-19, following a Capkin triple at 15:30.  Swarthmore began to knock down shots, both on the floor and at the line, opening up a 13-4 run that tied the game at 32-32 after a Matt Turner jumper in traffic at 10:54.

The contest was tied four different times in the next four minutes.  Swarthmore junior forward Steve Wolf banked in a shot at 6:25 and then stole the ball.  Allen finished off the possession with a huge three-pointer from the wing and the Garnet now led 45-40 at 5:53.  Two more free throws by Allen at 4:37 kept the Swarthmore lead at five.

Six straight free throws by Gettysburg put the visitors up one, 50-49, setting up another riveting Centennial finish in the final minute.

Allen finished with eight points in just 11 minutes while Kurman added seven points and two assists.

The Garnet travel to Lancaster, Pa. this Saturday to take on Franklin & Marshall at 4:00 p.m.  Swarthmore will return home on Wed., Jan. 17 when historical rival Haverford comes to Tarble for a 8:00 p.m. game.

Johnson Delivers Road Win for Swarthmore

January 10th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

WESTMINSTER, Md.  -  Swarthmore freshman guard Sean Johnson sank a three-pointer with 8.2 seconds left to send the Garnet to a 66-63 Centennial victory over hometown McDaniel in the Gill Center Tuesday night.

McDaniel's Joseph Hunter tied the game at 63-63 with a three-pointer from the top of the key as 13.4 showed on the clock.  The Garnet came right up the floor and Johnson drilled the game-winner from the left wing.  The Green Terror got one more look but Hunter's shot came up short as Swarthmore won in Westminster for just the third time in 13 seasons (McDaniel had won the last three meetings between the schools).

Junior guard Matt Kurman led Swarthmore (5-8 ovreall, 2-4 CC) with 12 points while classmate Ian McCormick added 11 points in 19 minutes of action.  Freshman forward Matt Turner continued his strong play, collecting 11 points and tied for game-high honors with eight rebounds.  Johnson was 4 for 5 in the second half, scoring all nine of his points in the final 20 minutes.

Strong shooting and efficient rebounding by the Green Terror helped the home team build a 27-18 lead in the first half.  Chad Arrington finished off a dunk at 6:48 top put McDaniel up by nine and ignited a 7-0 run that put the Green Terror in front, 32-18, with 4:51 left in the half.  Turner put a stop the run by sinking a free throw at 2:41.

A three-pointer by Swarthmore first-year guard Matt Allen and two more Turner free throws cut McDaniel's lead to 10 at halftime

Brett Foelber led McDaniel with nine first-half points while Steve Wolf '08 was high-man for the Garnet with six points.  The Green Terror held a 28-18 advantage on the backboards while shooting 42.4% from the field and holding the Garnet to just 28.6% from the floor.

Turner made consecutive baskets to force an early McDaniel time-out at the start of the second half.  A jumper by Wolf, a three-pointer by Kurman, and a basket by Johnson capped an 11-0 Swarthmore run to put Garnet in front for the first time, 37-36 with 15:15 left.

McDaniel's Chris Prior cut the run short with a jumper but Johnson kept the Swarthmore momentum rolling with a lay-up at 14:45.  The Garnet pushed their lead to six, 48-42, following a triple by Allen at 11:42.

The Green Terror responded with a 10-3 run to re-take the lead, 52-51, after a pair of free throws by Arrington at 8:46.  The game saw limited action until the final minutes when Turner broke a 59-59 tie with a steal and a fast-break lay-up at 3:21.  Following a free throw by McDaniel's Josh McKay at 1:43, Kurman found McCormick inside for an easy bucket and a three-point lead, 63-60, at 1:25.  This set up the shoot-out between Hunter and Johnson, with the Swarthmore lefty coming out on top.

The Garnet won their third game of the second semester despite being out-rebounded (45-36) and struggling at the free-throw line (9 of 19).  Swarthmore was able to overcome all of that by shooting almost 55% from the floor in the second half—the team's best showing of the season.

Foelber led McDaniel (6-6 overall, 3-3 CC) with 14 points while Arrington added 12 points and eight rebounds.

The Garnet hit the Tarble Pavilion floor on Thursday, January 11 when Centennial-rival Gettysburg College comes to town for a 4:00 p.m. game. It is the first time in 35 days Swarthmore will play at home, where it posted a 2-2 record in the first semester.

Terror Lock Down Garnet

January 10th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Hometown McDaniel scored 41 points in the second half, and handed out 18 assists on the night, in a 66-37 win over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference women's basketball Tuesday night.  Twelve different women scored for the Green Terror (9-2 overall, 3-1 CC), led by Danielle Fraider and Allison Biggs with nine points apiece.

Swarthmore junior center Karen Berk tallied her conference-leading ninth double-double with game highs in points (13) and rebounds (17).

The Garnet (4-8 overall, 1-6 CC) scored the first two baskets of the game, one each by Berk and freshman Lisa Schumacher.  The Green Terror's Heather Thompson put in a lay-up to make it 4-2 Swarthmore at 16:38 and the two teams went another three minutes without scoring.  A pair of free throws by Berk at 11:53 gave the Garnet a 9-6 edge.

A sloppy first half saw the teams combine for 27 turnovers and a 22.8 (13 for 57) shooting percentage.  McDaniel took its first lead of the night at 9:49 on Jamie Morningstar's free throw but Garnet junior guard Laura Popovics drained a jumper in the paint to put Swarthmore back on top, 11-10, at the 9:03 mark.  The Green Terror used a 15-4 run to finish the half with a 25-15 lead.

McDaniel's Courtney Gogolinski led all scorers at the intermission with seven points while Berk contributed six points for Swarthmore.

The Green Terror came out firing in the second half, banging out an 8-3 run to grab the 33-18 lead following a Biggs lay-up at 17:30.  McDaniel continued to surge ahead, using strong free throw shooting to extend their lead to 47-27—the Green Terror shot 44.1% in the second half on their way to the ninth victory of the season.

It was just not Swarthmore's night on the offensive end as the team shot just 20% from the floor and 13.6 % (3 of 22) from beyond the arc.

Berk's 17 boards (nine offensive) tied for the second-most by a Garnet women's player this season—Berk grabbed 19 rebounds vs. St. Joseph's (Ct.) on December 1.  The junior leads the Centennial with 12.0 rebounds per game and is in the top five with 16.1 points per game.

Popovics and Schumacher added eight points apiece while senior Jess Fuhr registered a game-high five blocks.

The Garnet return to Tarble Pavilion this coming Thursday, Jan. 11, taking on Centennial-rival Gettysburg at 2:00 p.m.

Forward Ian McCormick '08 picked up his fourth double-double of the season for Swarthmore (4-8 overall, 1-4 CC) while classmate Matt Kurman added 12 points and a game-high five assists.

The Red Devils (3-8 overall, 1-4 CC) raced to a commanding 17-4 lead at the start of the game as Kenny hit for eight points.  The Garnet used a 14-0 run to come all the way back to take a 26-24 lead on a Dillon McGrew '07 three-pointer at 3:54.  Much of the run consisted of strong free throw shooting by Swarthmore; the Garnet hit 13 of 17 from the charity stripe in the first half.  McCormick went a perfect six of six while freshman Matt Turner shot five of six on his way to nine first-half points.

Swarthmore's defense limited Dickinson to a single point in the final 10:21 of the first half and forced 11 Red Devil turnovers to take a 32-25 lead into the intermission.

McCormick scored on the first possession of the second half off a feed from Garnet freshman guard Sean Johnson but Dickinson reeled off eight straight points, the last coming on a Leszczynski lay-in, to make the score 34-33 Swarthmore.

Leszczynski hit a three-pointer at 11:53 to give the Red Devils a 42-39 lead (their first since mid-way through the first half).  Swarthmore sophomore Raul Ordonez hit one of two from the line and Kurman dropped in his second three-pointer of the day to hand the lead back to the Garnet.

The Dickinson lead swelled to as many as eight points (57-49 at 4:29) as they took their turn walking to the foul line (13 of 21 in the second half).  Swarthmore got as close as two, 61-59, after Kurman finished a lay-up.  The potential game-tying three-pointer from Johnson did not fall with 14 seconds left and Kenny hit another pair from the line to send the Red Devils to its third win of the season.

January 7th, 2007

GAME BOX SCORE

CARLISLE, Pa. - Dickinson guard Brooke Muller sank five three-pointers to lead the Lady Devils to a 57-41 home win against visiting Swarthmore Saturday afternoon.  The Garnet were led by junior Karen Berk's 13 points in the first game of the second semester for both squads.

Swarthmore jumped out to an 8-3 lead at 13:25 with successful jump shots by guards Lisa Schumacher '10 and Melissa Grigsby '09.  Dickinson (8-2 overall, 4-1 CC) tied the game up at 8-8 as guard Carly Onkotz sank a three-pointer and forward Laura Houseal finished off her third try in the paint.

Houseal found pay-dirt again a minute later, but Garnet junior guard Laura Popovics rained in triple at 11:07 to put Swarthmore back in front, 11-10.  It was the first shot attempt of the season for Popovics, who returned from a semester abroad and is currently eighth all-time with 56 career triples.

A pair of free throws by Berk increased the Swarthmore lead to 13-10 but the hometown Devils pushed out a 10-2 run to assume a five-point lead at 7:12.   The Garnet would come back to tie the game at 22-22 on a Schumacher three-pointer with 4:44 and tightened up the defense in the later stages of the half.  Grigsby clicked in a jumper with 36 seconds left to grab the momentum and send the Swarthmore women into the intermission ahead, 26-25.

The Garnet shot 50% (11 of 22) from the floor in the first half while holding a slight 18-16 edge on the boards.  Dickinson was limited to just 31 % from the floor (10 of 32).

Tigers Claw Past Garnet

December 31st, 2006

GEORGETOWN, Tex. - Trinity (TX) guard Brandon York came off the bench to score 13 points and center Mike Glib added 11 points as the Tigers defeated Swarthmore 57-41 in second round action at the Holiday Hoops Classic on Saturday evening in central Texas.

Garnet junior forward Steve Wolf led Swarthmore (3-7) with 12 points and nine rebounds while classmate Ian McCormick grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

The Tigers (6-5) have earned a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament each of the past four seasons—they are the third team Swarthmore faced this season that played in the 2006 NCAA Tournament (Wittenberg and Ursinus are the other two).

The start of tonight's game was unlike Friday night's game against Southwestern where 20 days without competition showed in the low shooting percentages on both sides.

Wolf opened the game with his patented up-and-under move in the post and Tigers' guard Charles Johnson responded with an elbow jumper to knot the game at 2-2.  Fliegelman's runner in the lane as the shot clock expired gave the Garnet an early 7-4 lead at 15:01.  The Tigers clipped off a 12-2 run, led by eight points from York, to assume a 14-9 lead at the 11:41 mark.

Swarthmore freshman Sean Johnson's three-pointer from the corner at 11:32 brought the Garnet within 16-12 and Wolf's lay-up 90 seconds later cut the deficit to 18-14 with 9:45.  The Garnet got within three points, 24-21, after freshman Matt Allen's 50-foot outlet found Wolf wide-open on the fast break at 4:29 left in the half.  Wolf kissed a short jumper off the glass at 1:55 to cut it to 24-23, but the Tigers' Polidgroff finished off a move inside and then found cutting teammate Jonathan Lewis for the hoop and the foul, pushing Trinity's lead back to six.

The Tigers took the 29-23 lead into the locker room, forcing 12 Garnet turnovers while holding a slight rebounding edge (17-15).   York led Trinity with eight points while Lewis dropped in seven—the Tigers bench tallied 23 of the 26 points in the first 20 minutes.

Wolf led all scorers with 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting while McCormick contributed seven rebounds and two blocks as Swarthmore shot 45.5% from the floor in the first half.

Trinity opened up the second half by attacking the interior Swarthmore defense, dropping a 9-5 run to open a 38-28 lead.  The Garnet responded with three-pointer from Matt Kurman '08 and then McCormick split the double-team and found Johnson open under the rim to cut the deficit to 38-33 at the 10:38 mark.

Glib pushed Trinity's lead back to 43-34 with a lay-up inside at 8:31.  York scored his 10th point of the night a minute later and Glib put in another score to push the Tigers' lead to 12 at 6:30.

Garnet first-year Matt Turner's jumper and lay-up by McCormick bookend another Glib bucket as the Garnet got within 10 points, 49-39, with four minutes remaining.

The Trinity defense was able to turn up Garnet turnovers (25 on the night) and late foul shooting kept Swarthmore at bay.  Both teams struggled from the line overall—Swarthmore was 6 of 13 (46%) while the Tigers were not much better at 11 of 21 (52%).

York finished 5 of 11, including two three-pointers, to held send Trinity to a third consecutive win.  Glib contributed many of his points late, hitting 5 of 6 while picking up three boards and a steal.

Turner contributed nine points on the night for the Garnet while senior guard Chris Casey handed out five assists for the second straight game.  Casey is tops in the Centennial in assist-to-turnover ratio (2.80) and is third in the Centennial in assists per game (3.70).

McCormick's pair of blocks gives the Seattle-native a team-high 21 on the season and moves the junior into second place all-time at Swarthmore with 93 career swats.

Swarthmore returns to Philadelphia on January 3 for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Philadelphia Bible and will resume Centennial Conference action on January 6 at Dickinson.  The Garnet hit the Tarble Pavilion floor on January when Centennial-rival Gettysburg College comes to town for a 4:00 p.m. game.

Garnet Open Second Semester in Texas

December 30th, 2006

GEORGETOWN, Tx. -- Swarthmore junior guard Noam Fliegelman (#22) made four free throws in the final minute as the Garnet men's basketball team held on to defeat host Southwestern University 55-53 in opening round action at the Holiday Hoops Classic Friday evening.

Garnet junior guard Matt Kurman led Swarthmore (3-6) with 10 points while freshmen Matt Turner and Sean Johnson chipped in eight points apiece as nine different Swarthmore players found the scoring column.

Swarthmore arrived in San Antonio, Texas on Wednesday afternoon following 20 days off for final examinations and the holidays.  The team traveled north to Round Rock and held two practices on the campus of Southwestern University before facing the home-standing Pirates on Friday night.

Both teams were cold to start the game, combining to shoot just 4 of 18 in the first six minutes. Turner finished a feed from Kurman at 13:54 to knot the score at 4-4 and then Johnson sank a triple from the left side a minute later to extend the Garnet lead to 7-4.

Swarthmore was forced to play the majority of the first half with its top-two leading scorers; juniors Steve Wolf and Ian McCormick were saddled with foul trouble and only combined for ten minutes of action.

Two free throws by Southwestern's Matt Caplan at 10:30 cut the Swarthmore lead to 7-6 and guard Mike Powell's triple gave the hometown team its first lead of the night, 9-7, at 10:06.  Garnet freshman guard Aaron Sweeney picked off a Pirates' cross-court pass and cruised in for an uncontested lay-up at 9:07 to tie the game at 9-9.  It was the first points of the Los Angeles-native's young college career.

The Southwestern zone defense gave the Garnet fits in the first half; Swarthmore made just one of its first 12 attempts from beyond the arc.  Senior guard Dillon McGrew put an end to the streak at 3:56, putting the Garnet ahead 16-12.  The Pirates then clipped off an 8-2 run, capped by a triple from Ben Sanders, ending the half with a 20-18 lead.

The two teams struggled to get going, both shooting 27% from the floor in the first half.  Turner was all over the floor for Swarthmore, drawing three charges while adding four points, three rebounds, and two steals.

The Pirates picked up six points from the free throw stripe (6 of 8) and held a 23-17 edge on the glass.  Casey Gorder led Southwestern with four points and six rebounds while Caplan and Sanders contributed four points each.

Turner gave the Garnet an energetic lift at the start of the second half, picking up two steals and a fast-break lay-in at 19:00 to tie the game at 20-20.  Powell answered on the next Pirates' possession, curling off a double-screen to sink his second triple of the night.  Swarthmore built on Turner's energy, converting on three consecutive possessions (a Johnson triple, a Chris Casey '07 three-pointer, and a pull up jumper by Kurman) to put the Garnet ahead 26-22 at the 16:02 mark.

The Pirates' Goran Stojcic tracked down an air-ball at 13:55 and scored a basket plus a free throw as Southwestern got within 30-29.  Kurman and Johnson hit back to back jumpers to push the Swarthmore lead back to five points, 34-29.  Wolf's jump-hook in the lane at 12:10 gave the Garnet a nine-point lead and forced Southwestern to take a time-out.

The Swarthmore offensive surge continued; two McCormick free throws and a pair of deep Kurman triples put Swarthmore up 44-29 with nine minutes to go.  The 28-11 run to start the half gave the Garnet its largest margin—15 points--after McCormick finished in traffic at 8:40 for a 46-31 Swarthmore lead.

The Pirates proceeded cut the deficit in half, 48-41, by busting out a 9-2 run over the next four minutes.  Out of a Garnet time-out, Wolf sank a jumper with the shot clock winding down to push the lead back to nine, 50-41, with 3:41 remaining.

Southwestern switched to full-court pressure, stopping the Garnet on three different possessions.  Pirates' Ben Schleif came up empty on a three-point try and Swarthmore ran a play for Wolf.  The junior forward drew a foul and converted one of the two free throws to give the Garnet a six-point advantage with 1:25 showing on the clock.  Powell put home a pair of free throws for Southwestern at 1:13 before Fliegelman broke the Pirates' press and converted two foul shots from the charity stripe.

After a Southwestern miss, an off-the-ball foul by Kurman with 45 seconds left gave the Pirates the ball back and Caplan hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 53-49 with 31 seconds.  The Southwestern press forced another Swarthmore turn over and Schleif hit tea-drop runner in the lane with 27 seconds left to make it 53-51.  Fliegelman got the ensuing in-bounds pass and streaked across half-court, wasting valuable seconds before Southwestern could committ a foul.  Fleigelman put in both attempts from the line with 20 seconds left and two Pirates' attempts missed the target before Caplan's jumper at the buzzer sounded made the final margin.

The Swarthmore offense showed efficiency in the second half, hitting for 50% (12 of 24) from the floor and 82% (9 of 11) from the free throw line.  The Garnet defense held the Pirates to 28% shooting on the night and picked up a season-high nine blocks (a career-high six by McCormick).

Caplain and Gorder led Southwestern (5-5) with 12 points apiece with Gorder collecting a game-high 11 rebounds.  Powell added 11 points and two steals for the Pirates.

The Garnet (CC) will take on Trinity (TX) tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. in second round action of the Southwestern Classic--Trinity defeated Pitt-Greensburg 82-71 in earlier action.  Swarthmore returns home on January 3 for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game at Philadelphia Bible and will resume Centennial Conference action on January 6 at Dickinson.

Four Garnet Hit Double Digits, Swarthmore Downs Bryn Mawr

December 13th, 2006

GAME BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Garnet women picked up the first Centennial win of the season and put a three-game skid to bed as defeating visiting Bryn Mawr 60-50 Tuesday night in Tarble Pavilion.  Four Garnet women scored double-digit points to send Swarthmore (4-6 overall, 1-4 CC) to its 30th consecutive win over the Owls (2-7 overall, 0-4 CC).

Garnet junior Karen Berk posted a game-high 18 points with 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season while fellow forward Pamela Costello added 12 points and eight rebounds.  Melissa Grigsby contributed 11 points for Swarthmore while junior Kristen Traband posted a new career-high with 10 points off the bench.

Bryn Mawr opened the game with four straight points and held the Garnet without a shot attempt for the first 1:51 and without a point for the first 3:25.  After Grigsby got the Garnet on the board with a 15-footer, a Katie Driscoll three-pointer with 16:02 remaining in the half gave the Owls their largest lead, 7-2.  Costello led her team back into the game, tying it once at 7-7 with a trey and again at 9-9 with a lay-up before Traband gave the Garnet their first lead of the game, 11-9 with a short jumper with 12:49 to play.

The Garnet remained in control for the rest of the half.  Costello led the way with 12 points and seven rebounds, while frontcourt mate Berk added eight points and five boards.   Freshman guard Lisa Schumacher capped things off with a three-pointer from the top of the key with 22 seconds left to give the hosts their largest lead of the evening at 35-21.

Both teams struggled to find points to start the second half--Berk scored her fourth point of the half to put Swarthmore up 39-24 at 11:29.  Traband converted an old-fashioned three-point play after a nice feed from Grigsby at 9:32 and the Garnet had the largest lead of the night, 42-25, at 9:32.  From that point it became a free-throw competition and Swarthmore, ranked second in the Centennial at 84.6% coming into the night, sank 10 of 14 to maintain at least an eight-point edge for the rest of the game.  On the other side, the Owls hit only six of 14, finishing eight of 21 on the night.

Driscoll was a perfect 4 for 4 from beyond the arc to led Bryn Mawr with 14 points.  Sophomore Jessica Allen had a game-high 14 rebounds and senior Amy Johnson added 13 rebounds.  Sophomore wing Julia Harris tied her season-high with seven steals.

Swarthmore is off for 25 days to take final examinations and a holiday break—its next game will be at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 6 at Dickinson.
