Sutcliffe All-Conference Player of the Week

September 11th, 2007

Swarthmore senior Ryan Sutcliffe (Milford, Del. / Milford) was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10, as announced by the Conference office.

Sutcliffe, a goalkeeper, spent 220 minutes in between the goal posts for the Garnet (3-0-2) this past week, without allowing an opponent to score. He made four saves in a double overtime 0-0 tie at Arcadia on Sept. 7, including a key sliding stop on a Knight breakaway.

Sutcliffe made his next start against Montclair State, ranked 11th in the latest National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCA), on Sept. 8, blanking the Red Hawks in 0-0 tie through two overtimes. He recorded three saves to lower his goals-against average to 0.25, fourth in the Centennial.

Sutcliffe has three shutouts in four starts this season, improving his career goals-against average to 0.53, best in school history.

This is Sutcliffe's second CC Defensive Player of the Week award; he received the honor on Sept. 6, 2005. Sutcliffe is the third Swarthmore athlete to receive a CC Player of the Week in 2007, joining two members of the Swarthmore women's soccer team (goalkeeper Lauren Walker '09 and forward Danielle Tocchet '08).

Sutcliffe, a psychology major, is pointed towards a law career, having interned at Tunnell & Raysor two summers ago. He is a McCabe Scholar and has served on the McCabe Scholars' Leadership Committee.

Garnet Remain Undefeated, Tie #11 Red Hawks

September 9th, 2007

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Swarthmore passed its biggest test of the season to date, taking it to the #11 Montclair State Red Hawks all afternoon long before settling for a 0-0 tie. The Garnet remain undefeated on the season at 3-0-2.

Montclair State (3-0-1) went 20-1-1 in 2006 and is currently ranked #11 in the country. The Garnet saw the day's match as an excellent opportunity to prepare for next Saturday's faceoff with #9 Johns Hopkins. After their performance against the Red Hawks, the Garnet have guaranteed that Saturday's match will be as highly-anticipated as any on the 2007 Centennial slate.

Active ball pressure from Garnet forwards Michael Bonesteel '08 (Clifton Park, N.Y. / LaSalle Institute) and Evan Nesterak '09 (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) forced an early turnover in the Red Hawks' end, leading to a corner kick and the team's first scoring opportunity.

The match's first good scoring chance came in the 28th minute, when Montclair's John Esposito played a diagonal ball backwards to a wide-open, Mike Krol, who scorched the ball just inches wide of the net from 20 yards out.

Swarthmore made good use of its depth, as 16 players saw first-half action without any drop-off in quality of play. Overall, the Garnet used 18 players to Montclair's 14.

A Montclair turnover led to a 3-on-2 opportunity for the Garnet in the 42nd minute, but skillful play from a Red Hawk defender forced a goal kick. Later, with just seconds on the clock, Swarthmore junior defender Rory Stackpole (Sanford, Maine / Sanford) sent a free kick into the box, but Mele grabbed the ball just over the head of junior Ladule Lako Lo Sarah (Davis, Calif. / Claremont).

Montclair opened the second half on the attack, culminating in Nick Masterson's too-high shot at 46:39 before the Red Hawks finally cleared the ball in the 3rd minute.

Swarthmore nearly got on the board five minutes later when a bouncing ball came to Nesterak in the box, but Mele came out in time to force an awkward shot that flew over the goal. In the 12th, minute, freshman Toby Resch (Darmstadt, Germany / Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium) ran onto a free ball about 25 yards out but his shot was also too high. More scoring chances followed, as the Garnet attack continued to gather momentum.

The intensity escalated into more extracurricular activity in the 72th minute, resulting in a Montclair free kick and eventually a Krol bicycle kick shot that went well wide.

In the 83rd minute, Montclair's Owen Nichols found the post with a shot from just inside the box. The ball came out to Red Hawk Mike Vermes, but Garnet goalkeeper Ryan Sutcliffe (Milford, Del. / Milford) sprinted to the ball in time to cut off Vermes's angle and made the save.

The fast and furious play continued right to the end-of-half horn, when Garnet senior midfielder Andrew Macurdy (Lumberton, N.J. / Rancocas Valley) forced Mele to make yet another save from 30 yards out.

Swarthmore nearly ended the game in beautiful fashion after sophomore forward Andres Freire (Philadelpia, Pa. / Central) fed a beautiful pass to Nesterak through traffic. Nesterak dribbled around one more defender and got off a good shot, but it went just wide. Two Garnet corner kicks followed, but the Red Hawks finally cleared the ball with just over four minutes on the clock.

With 1:36 on the clock, Swarthmore junior Stu Leon (Wrentham, Mass. / King Phillip Regional) went down hard and had to be helped off the field. The remaining seconds passed largely uneventfully, and the thrilling match continued into a second extra session.

Montclair's Owen Nichols one-touched a powerful shot in traffic near the goal just over three minutes in, but the ball went right into the waiting arms of Sutcliffe, who went down to his knees to secure the save.

Swarthmore had all the chances as the clock ticked down, forcing Mele to touch the ball three times in the final minute, but could not get a shot off before time expired.

All of the statistics favored Swarthmore, who had a 20-13 shot advantage and a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. Mele made nine saves for the Red Hawks; Sutcliffe had to make just three for the Garnet in his third shutout of the season.

The Garnet defense played perhaps their best match of the season, getting significant minutes from senior Darren Johnson (Lexington, Va. / Rockbridge County). Five games into the season-a span of eight hours and ten minutes--Swarthmore has let in just one goal.

Swarthmore has one more non-conference test--at the perennially strong Seahawks of St. Mary's (Md.)--before the aforementioned barnburner against Johns Hopkins. The Centennial Conference season-opening match is the second half of next Saturday's soccer doubleheader at Clothier Stadium. Game time is 7:00 p.m.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -The Swarthmore volleyball team made its 2007 Tarble Pavilion-debut, splitting a pair of matches with Neumann and Marymount (Md.) on a steamy Saturday afternoon.

The Garnet (2-4) jumped on Neumann (4-2)  in the early match, claiming the first game 30-26. The Knights re-grouped and pushed past Swarthmore by sweeping the final three games by scores of 30-17, 30-24, 30-28.

Swarthmore came out firing in the afternoon match with Marymount (1-2), using a strong middle attack to claim a 3-0 victory by scores of 30-23, 30-8, 30-25. Fischer King in Garnet Home Opener

September 9th, 2007

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -Swarthmore senior forward Abbie Fischer (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) score two goals to lead the Garnet to a 2-0 win over visiting Neumann in the 2007 home opener on Saturday afternoon.

Fischer, the team leader with three goals this season, notched her first score at 11:45, taking a feed from sophomore Hoa Pham (East Lansdowne, Pa. / Penn Wood). It is Pham's fifth point of the young season, placing her just behind Fischer among the team leaders.

Fischer added an insurance goal for the Garnet (2-1) late in the second half, tallying her 18th career goal at 57:24.

Swarthmore's offensive attack came fast and furious at the Knights (1-2), out-shooting the visitors 32-3 while holding a 15-3 edge in penalty corners.

Garnet first-year goalie Katie Ashmore (Princeton, N.J. / Princeton) made three saves for her first career shutout. The Knights' goalie, Chelsea Ward (Willingboro, N.J. / Rancocas Valley) posted 15 saves for the visitors.

Swarthmore Rides Ladule to Win Over Thoroughbreds

September 8th, 2007

SARATOGA, N.Y. -- Swarthmore junior Ladule Lako Lo Sarah (Davis, Calif./ Claremont High School) continued his breakout year with a pair of first-half goals, leading the Garnet (3-0-1) to a 2-0 lead over Skidmore (0-3) on a warm Friday evening.

Skidmore was the aggressor early on, blasting a pair of shots high and wide in the first five minutes. The Garnet began to have more offensive success by frequently changing the point of attack. In the 18th minute, junior Evan Nesterak (Parker, Colo./ Ponderosa) found freshman Toby Resch (Darmstadt, Germany/ Ludwig-Georgs-Gymnasium) just outside the 18-yard line, but Resch's attempt was saved by Thoroughbred goalkeeper Jake Densen (Summit, N.J./Summit).

Both goalkeepers were active on balls coming into the box; Swarthmore's  Zach Weimar (Rutledge, Pa./ Friends Central) grabbed a pair of long throw-ins, while Densen picked off a free kick, reaching over the top of several Garnet heads.

With 18:15 on the clock, Skidmore was whistled for a foul just outside the box on the right side. Just off the bench, Lo Sarah took the direct kick left-footed and snuck a low, bending ball between Densen and the near post. Densen was injured on the play and was replaced by Steve Vazquez (Central Falls, RI/Moses Brown School).

Just under three minutes later, the ball came free at the edge of the Skidmore box. Vazquez and Garnet freshman Morgan Langley (Honolulu, Hawaii/ Iolani School) raced to the ball, and Vazquez arrived just in time to deny Langley's shot attempt. The ball ricocheted to the left to a wide-open Lo Sarah, who wasted no time in hitting, a high, arcing shot into the empty net for his second tally of the match.

Skidmore nearly got on the board in the 38th minute after a pretty cross found freshman Shane Minte (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) in traffic right in front of the goal, but Weimar held his ground and came up with the save. Weimar completed a very solid half by boxing away another long throw-in with two minutes to go.

Lo Sarah nearly completed the hat trick with five minutes left in the half but saw his shot sail just high, and Swarthmore settled for a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

Denson reentered at the start of the second half to a barrage of Garnet shots. Junior defender Rory Stackpole (Sanford, Maine/ Sanford High School) nearly scored first career goal from 35 yards out, putting the ball just under the crossbar, but Denson punched it away. Senior forward Michael Bonesteel (Clifton Park , N.Y./ LaSalle Institute) got a clean look a few minutes later, but his attempt sailed wide.

Play became markedly more physical as the clock wound below 20 minutes. Swarthmore consistently controlled the ball through this period, stymieing any Skidmore thoughts of a comeback; the Thoroughbreds would wind up taking just three second-half shots.

Two Skidmore players nearly got a breakaway with seven minutes to play, but Garnet junior defender Jeff Kushner (Norristown, Pa./ Methacton) turned on the jets, got to the ball first, and kicked it safely away. The Thoroughbreds once again nearly got on the board in the waning minutes after miscommunication between Weimar and Kushner led to Skidmore's Albert Ottati (Richmond, Va./ MLW Governor) getting a shot at an open net from 30 yards out, but the attempt sailed well over the goal mouth.

Lo Sarah took five shots, leading the team for the third time in four games on the season. The junior, who tied for the team lead in assists as a freshman and entered the year with more assists (7) than goals (5), continued to emerge as a big-time scoring threat.

A number of Garnet first-years saw significant action in the second half, led by Andreas Lagos '11 (Dunedin, Fla./ Palm Harbor University High School), who played active soccer at the forward position.

The Garnet finished the match with a 16-10 shot advantage. Weimar finished with four saves en route to his first victory and shutout of the season.

Swarthmore will spend the night in Saratoga and will return to Wachenheim Field tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m. to face Montclair State.

September 7th, 2007

BOX SCORE

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener senior Jamie Carr (Norristown, Pa. / Kennedy-Kenrick) scored three goals as the hometown Pride defeated Swarthmore 6-2 in non-conference field hockey action Thursday evening.

The Pride (1-0) controlled the action in the opening ten minutes, getting a pair of scores from Carr. Carr's first two goals were identical-she waited on the far side of the cage for a rebound effort to fall at her feet, calmly depositing the ball. Her first score came at 2:55 while the second was registered at 7:09.

Widener added a third goal in the 16th minute off one of their eight penalty corner opportunities. Ellen Etzweiler (Landisville, Pa. / Philadelphia Univ.) started the set play, feeding to senior captain Colleen Guile (Springfield, Pa. / Springfield) on the short side. Guile took one touch and blasted the ball in the cage at 15:29.

Swarthmore got on the board late in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Joslyn Young (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Community) sent a hard pass at the front of the cage and senior forward Abbie Fischer (Sudbury, Mass. / Lincoln-Sudbury Regional) tipped it through at 29:36 to cut the score to 3-1.

The Pride responded with another goal before the half, as sophomore Kelly Eash (Glenolden, Pa. / Marple Newtown) finished off her own rebound at 33:03. The home team held a 15-7 shot advantage at the intermission.

Forward Erica Rose (Plymouth Meeting, Pa. / Kennedy-Kenrick) gave Widener a 5-1 lead at the start of the second half, taking a feed from Eash and walking it across the goal line at 42:00.

Garnet sophomore forward Hoa Pham (East Lansdowne, Pa. / Penn Wood) tallied a second score for the visitors, cashing in with a well-placed shot from the right side of the Pride cage at 53:00.

Carr completed her hat-trick just as she notched her other two scores-the senior collected a rebound and finished the goal at 58:13.

Widener goalie Kate Jensen (Center Valley, Pa. / Southern Lehigh) posted three saves in almost 60 minutes of action. Swarthmore starter Katie Ashmore '11 (Freehold, N.J. / Freehold) made nine saves in the first half while sophomore Gina Grubb (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Oakland Catholic) posted four stops in the second stanza.
