Sutcliffe All-Conference Player of the Week

Swarthmore senior Ryan Sutcliffe (Milford, Del. / Milford) was named Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 10, as announced by the Conference office.

Sutcliffe, a goalkeeper, spent 220 minutes in between the goal posts for the Garnet (3-0-2) this past week, without allowing an opponent to score. He made four saves in a double overtime 0-0 tie at Arcadia on Sept. 7, including a key sliding stop on a Knight breakaway.

Sutcliffe made his next start against Montclair State, ranked 11th in the latest National Soccer Coaches of America (NSCA), on Sept. 8, blanking the Red Hawks in 0-0 tie through two overtimes. He recorded three saves to lower his goals-against average to 0.25, fourth in the Centennial.

Sutcliffe has three shutouts in four starts this season, improving his career goals-against average to 0.53, best in school history.

This is Sutcliffe's second CC Defensive Player of the Week award; he received the honor on Sept. 6, 2005. Sutcliffe is the third Swarthmore athlete to receive a CC Player of the Week in 2007, joining two members of the Swarthmore women's soccer team (goalkeeper Lauren Walker '09 and forward Danielle Tocchet '08).

Sutcliffe, a psychology major, is pointed towards a law career, having interned at Tunnell & Raysor two summers ago. He is a McCabe Scholar and has served on the McCabe Scholars' Leadership Committee.
