Avenging Angels Sweep Garnet to Conclude Spring Trip

RALEIGH, N.C. – It was a sour ending to the North Carolina Spring Break trip for the Swarthmore College softball team (2-6), as Meredith (10-6) pitchers held the Garnet offense to just one run over two games, as the Avenging Angels defeated Swat 2-0 and 5-1 on Friday evening.

Senior Kathryn Riley pitched well despite not picking up a win on the day, allowing just one earned run while tossing 10.2 innings on the day. Riley also got it done at the plate for the Garnet, finishing the day 3-of-5 from the plate.

LANCASTER, Pa. – Senior Kathryn Riley of the Swarthmore College softball team has been named the Centennial Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.

Strong Pitching Leads Swarthmore Baseball To Season-Opening Sweep of Presentation from Desert Classic

BOULDER CREEK, Ariz. – Fantastic pitching performances from sophomores Neil Mejia and Kyle Crawford highlighted the Swarthmore College baseball team’s season-opening sweep of Presentation (S.D.) in the first day of the Desert Classic. The Garnet (2-0) won the first game 5-3 – thanks in part to a three-run rally in the top of seventh inning – while dominating the second game 6-0.

Mejia and Crawford were both outstanding on the mound to propel the Garnet to victories; Mejia (1-0) won the first game with a seven-strikeout performance, while Crawford (1-0) followed with seven strikeouts of his own to pick up his first career shutout.

Garnet Lax Opens Season With 21-2 Rout of Neumann to Highlight Tri-Co Invitational

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The Swarthmore women’s lacrosse team (1-0) opened the 2010 season in dominating fashion, defeating Neumann 21-2 in the second game of the Tri-Co Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Clothier Field.

Sophomore Annalise Mowry (5) and junior Amy Vachal (4) were the stars for the Garnet, combining for 10 of the Swarthmore’s 21 goals.

Garnet Lax Doubled-Up By Widener, 12-6

CHESTER, Pa. – Senior Tyler Bradshaw scored three goals on four shots while adding an assist, but it wasn’t enough to erase a seven-goal first period by homestanding Widener, as the Pride defeated the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team 12-6 on Saturday afternoon from Leslie Quick Jr. Stadium.

2010 Season Preview: Softball Looks To Bounce Back

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Following a 2009 season that was derailed by injuries and just plain bad luck, the Swarthmore College softball team has high hopes that it can quickly rebound in 2010 and continue its recent run of success on the softball diamond.

Head coach Renee Clarke, who enters her seventh season with the Garnet, will be looking to improve the upon last year’s 5-11 record in the Centennial Conference and maintains optimism that this squad has what it takes to return to the postseason.

Swarthmore Women Down Oberlin 8-1

Kenyetta Givans Earns Two Golds, Breaks School Record to Pace Swarthmore Indoor Track at Centennial Championships

HAVERFORD, Pa. – It was quite a day for sophomore Kenyetta Givans.

Givans earned two golds, taking first place in the women’s 55m hurdles (8.44) and women’s 55 meter dash (7.47) – breaking the school record and earning an NCAA provisional time in the 55m hurdles – to pace the Swarthmore College indoor track teams at the Centennial Conference Championships from Haverford College on Saturday evening.

The Swat women’s 4×800 relay team – consisting of senior Lauren DeLuca, senior Mariel Feigen, sophomore Margret Lenfest, and freshman Rebecca Hammond – also earned a medal and made history, taking second-place with a school-record time of 9:41.47.

Garnet Men Open Lax Season With Convincing 8-2 Win Over Eastern

A strong defensive performance and a balanced scoring attack led the way for the Swarthmore College men’s lacrosse team (1-0), which christened the 2010 season with an 8-2 victory over Eastern (0-1) on a frigid Saturday night from Clothier Field.

Senior Tyler Bradshaw and sophomore Zach Belden each netted two goals apiece, while senior Gavin Musynske, senior Anthony Phalen , sophomore John Bukawyn and freshman Wes Marcik also added goals to pace the Garnet attack.

Senior captain goalkeeper Kevin Friedenberg was outstanding in net for the Garnet, making 13 saves to lead a ferocious Swat defensive performance; the two goals allowed is the least by a Swat opponent since the 2008 season-opener against Randolph-Macon (3/1/08). Senior captain Max Wilson led the defense with three caused turnovers.

Swimmer Travis Pollen Breaks American Paralympic Record in 100 Freestyle

LANCASTER, Pa. – Swarthmore College men’s swimmer Travis Pollen ’12 broke the paralympic S9 American record in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.80 while competing for the Garnet at the Centennial Conference Championships on Sunday evening from Franklin & Marshall College.
