Garnet Lax Doubled-Up By Widener, 12-6
CHESTER, Pa. - Senior Tyler Bradshaw scored three goals on four shots while adding an assist, but it wasn't enough to erase a seven-goal first period by homestanding Widener, as the Pride defeated the Swarthmore College men's lacrosse team 12-6 on Saturday afternoon from Leslie Quick Jr. Stadium.
Widener's Nate Meyer scored three goals on three shots in the first quarter to propel the Pride to the early 7-1 lead in the first quarter, building a six-goal deficit that Swat (1-1) could never recover from.
Meyer opened the scoring just :58 seconds into the game, while extending the lead to 4-0 on his second goal. Widener's Cory Malampy may have put the dagger into the Garnet early, scoring his first of three goals with :42 seconds left in the first stanza, giving the a Pride a commanding 7-1 lead.
Swarthmore countered with three goals in the second quarter, including one by freshman Wes Marcik with just :01 left to cut the lead to 7-4 at halftime, giving new life to a Garnet comeback.
But that would be as close as the Garnet would get, as the Pride scored the next five goals of the game to put Swat out of reach.
Senior captain goalkeeper Kevin Friedenberg - the reigning Centennial Conference Defensive Player of the Week - made seven saves for the Garnet.
Marcik also added an assist for the Garnet. Senior Gavin Musynske and sophomore Max Hubbard also hit the back of net for Swat. Zach Belden and John Bukawyn both recorded assists.
Swarthmore will now head south to take on Lynchburg (Va.) on Wednesday.
