Avenging Angels Sweep Garnet to Conclude Spring Trip
RALEIGH, N.C. - It was a sour ending to the North Carolina Spring Break trip for the Swarthmore College softball team (2-6), as Meredith (10-6) pitchers held the Garnet offense to just one run over two games, as the Avenging Angels defeated Swat 2-0 and 5-1 on Friday evening.
Senior Kathryn Riley pitched well despite not picking up a win on the day, allowing just one earned run while tossing 10.2 innings on the day. Riley also got it done at the plate for the Garnet, finishing the day 3-of-5 from the plate.
Riley allowed just one earned run in over 10 innings of work.
In the first game, the difference was the pivotal third inning; Meredith used a one-out triple from Kristin Morris and a bases-loaded walk from Ashley Braswell to score the only two runs of the game. Swat out-hit the Avenging Angel 5-4 for the game - fueled by two hits from junior Krista Schierer - but couldn't get the runs across the board, losing by a 2-0 final.
In game two, Swarthmore got on the board first, as freshman Erin Curtis came home thanks to a wild pitch, giving the Garnet 1-0 lead.
The Avenging Angels responded with two runs in the bottom of the frame, scoring two runs on three singles to take back the lead at 2-1.
From there, the Garnet offense failed to register the big hit in crucial situations, picking up four hits over the next four innings but leaving six runners on base. Meanwhile, the Avenging Angels scored runs in bottom of the fifth and sixth innings to bring the game to the 5-1 final.
Freshman Isabel Sanchez took the loss on the mound for the Garnet in game two, surrendering two runs in 1.2 innings of work.
Swarthmore returns home from North Carolina and will return to action from Clothier Fields on Tuesday against Penn-State Abington (3:00 p.m.)
