Volleyball Splits at Neumann

Aston, Pa. – Reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week Genny Pezzola combined for 33 kills and 27 digs as the Swarthmore volleyball team split a pair of games at the Neumann Tri-Meet, topping the host Knights 3-1 (16-25, 26-24, 25-12, 25-20) but falling to local rival Widener 3-1 (22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25) on Saturday afternoon.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – TCNJ’s Casey Caruso scored in the 26th minute and Alexa Rozzi put the game away in the 87th as the No. 8 Lions defeated No. 15 Swarthmore 2-0 from Clothier Field Stadium on a chilly Wednesday night. The loss is the Garnet’s (5-1) first of the 2009 season. Sophomore goalkeeper Marie Mutryn tied a career-high with 12 saves for the Garnet.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – After receiving praise and accolades all week after the upset of then-No. 2 Stevens Tech, the No. 9 Swarthmore men’s soccer team certainly lived up to its new-found hype, overwhelming local-rival Widener 4-0 from Clothier Field Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore Fabian Castro netted two goals while junior Morgan Langley and sophomore David Sterngold also found the back of the net for the streaking Garnet (5-0).

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – After winning five straight matches, the Garnet fell to the Stevens Tech Ducks 3-1 in a hard fought battle on Wednesday night from Tarble Pavilion. Sophomore Genny Pezzola put away 11 kills and 14 digs to lead the home team.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior goalie Katie Ashmore made nine saves while facing pressure all game long, but three second-half goals by Elizabethtown proved to be the difference as the Blue Jays earned a 3-0 victory over the Garnet (2-3, 1-0) on Tuesday afternoon from Clothier Field Stadium.

Garnet Soccer Teams Soar To New Heights in National Rankings

KANSAS CITY, MO. – Both the Swarthmore men’s (4-0) and women’s (5-0) soccer teams are still unbeaten – and both are still climbing the national rankings. Fresh off its 1-0 upset of previously No. 2 Stevens, the Garnet men climbed two spots in the national poll to No. 9. Not to be outdone, the women’s team – coming off thrilling victories over Eastern (2-1) and Elizabethtown (1-0 OT) – moved up eight spots to No. 15, the highest ranking in program history. Regionally, both the men and women are ranked No. 2 in the Mid-Atlantic region – with each trailing No. 1 Messiah respectively.
