Volleyball Splits at Neumann

Aston, Pa. - Reigning Centennial Conference Player of the Week Genny Pezzola combined for 33 kills and 27 digs as the Swarthmore volleyball team split a pair of games at the Neumann Tri-Meet, topping the host Knights 3-1 (16-25, 26-24, 25-12, 25-20) but falling to local rival Widener 3-1 (22-25, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25) on Saturday afternoon.

Swarthmore rebounded nicely from a tough loss to Stevens on Wednesday with a 3-1 victory over Neumann University in its first of two games on Saturday.  Senior Kearney Bangs set up the Garnet attack with 33 assists in the game as sophomore Genny Pezzola finished with 16 kills.  Senior Johanna Bond and sophomore Lisa Shang led the defense with 12 digs apiece.  Swarthmore won the match in four games (16-25, 26-24, 25-12, 25-20) rallying back after losing the first game.

Game two would be a local rivalry when Swarthmore went toe to toe with Widener University.  The outcome wasn't what the Garnet were hoping for losing 3-1 to the Pride.  Each game came down the wire as Pezzola, Bond, Shang and freshmen Kat Montemurro and Allie Coleman combined for an impressive 62 kills.

The Garnet (8-4) will be back in action on Thursday September 24th when they open up conference play at Bryn Mawr College.  The girls attack the net at 7 PM.
