Garnet Coaches Participate in SRS World of Work Program
SWARTHMORE, Pa. -- On Thursday, May 1st, 2008, Swarthmore's Harleigh Leach, Head Volleyball Coach and Eric Wagner, Head Men's Soccer Coach participated in the annual World of Work program sponsored by the Swarthmore Rotary Club. The program is designed to give students an opportunity to learn from local business people and educators how "school related skills" are involved in the world of work.
A dozen fifth grade students from the Swarthmore Rutledge School took a tour of the Swarthmore College's athletics facilities led by Leach and Wagner. The students were introduced to the "workplace" of the Garnet Athletics staff and faculty, and had the opportunity for a question/answer session with the two coaches.
Following the tour the students gathered in a team classroom in the Lamb-Miller Field House for a brief exercise in administration of collegiate varsity sports. First, Leach handed out a copy of the form that the Garnet coaches use for planning road trips. Then she guided the fifth graders through the process of calculating all the information needed for a typical road trip. Each student had a chance to fill out the form for themselves, as a way to get an "inside look" at the working environment and one of the duties of college athletics coaches.
This was the fifth year both coaches have participated in the annual program with SRS.
