Johns Hopkins Grinds Out 64-58 Win Over Garnet

BALTIMORE – Andrew Farber-Miller scored 14 points as one of three Johns Hopkins players to reach double-figures as the homestanding Blue Jays earned a hard-fought 64-58 victory over the Swarthmore College men’s basketball team on Tuesday evening. Freshman Will Gates finished with a game-high 15 points – 11 of which came in the second half – while Ryan Carmichael scored 14 points to lead Swarthmore (2-11, 1-5), which stayed with the Blue Jays until the final buzzer but were once again done-in by poor shooting (35 percent) from the field.

Gates Big Day Not Enough as No. 13 Franklin & Marshall Crushes Garnet 75-51

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Freshman Will Gates scored a game-high 27 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Swarthmore men’s basketball team (2-10, 1-4), but No. 13 Franklin & Marshall saw three different players score above 17 points, as the Diplomats cruised to a 75-51 victory over Swat on Saturday afternoon from Tarble Pavilion.

GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Five different Gettysburg players scored in double figures to pace a potent offense that shot 56 percent from the field, as the Bullets defeated the Swarthmore College men’s basketball team 80-63 in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday evening.

LEXINGTON, Va. – What a difference a day makes.

Just 24 hours after the Swarthmore men’s basketball team struggled to find any rhythm in its first game in 24 days – shooting just 28 percent and going 1-of-17 from behind the arc – the Garnet came to life against Drew University, with the Swat offense connecting on a season-high 10 three-pointers and the defense forcing 17 turnovers as the Garnet (2-8, 1-2) defeated the Rangers 76-69 on Sunday afternoon to capture the consolation title at the Washington & Lee Tournament.

Freshman Will Gates scored 29 points – behind four three-pointers – while pulling down a team-high seven rebounds to lead a balanced Swat scoring attack.

Generals Drop the Garnet 59-48 in Washington & Lee Tournament Opener

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Swarthmore men’s basketball team made its way back onto the the court after a 24-day break from action in the Washington and Lee Tournament in Lexington, Virginia. Swarthmore senior Danny Walker and junior Ryan Carmichael each netted 14 points against Washington and Lee (7-2, 1-1), but the Garnet (1-8, 1-2) still fell to the Generals 59-48 in the tournament opener.

Garnet Lose Heartbreaker to Washington in OT, 80-70

CHESTERTOWN, Md. – Senior Danny Walker hit the game-tying lay-up with 1.5 seconds left in regulation to help the Swarthmore College men’s basketball team rally from an eight-point second half deficit to force overtime, but homestanding Washington College scored 20 points in overtime as the Garnet lost a heartbreaker to the Shoremen 80-70 (OT) on Wednesday evening.

Cold-Shooting Garnet Downed By Widener 66-44

CHESTER, Pa. – Widener’s B.J. Smith scored a game-high 11 points and pulled down a game-high nine rebounds to lead a balanced scoring attack that saw 12 different players score as the Pride defeated the Swarthmore College men’s basketball team 66-44 in non-conference action on Monday night from Widener University.

Stockbower, Gates Named Centennial Conference Performers of the Week

LANCASTER, Pa. – Junior Kathryn Stockbower of the Swarthmore College women’s basketball team and freshman Will Gates of the men’s team have each been named the Centennial Conference Performers of the Week in their respective sports for the week ending December 7, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

Garnet Stun Ursinus 74-68 For First Win of the Season

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Not even a mid-game power outage could deny the Swarthmore College men’s basketball team of its first win of the season.

Freshman Will Gates scored a career-high 31 points – the most by any Garnet player in three seasons – while pulling down 17 rebounds as Swarthmore (1-5, 1-1) stunned highly-regarded Ursinus 74-68 from Tarble Pavilion on a snowy afternoon at the College.

The win is the Garnet’s first victory of the season and its first win against Ursinus since the 1997-98 season, snapping a streak of 22-consecutive defeats.
