Johns Hopkins Grinds Out 64-58 Win Over Garnet
BALTIMORE - Andrew Farber-Miller scored 14 points as one of three Johns Hopkins players to reach double-figures as the homestanding Blue Jays earned a hard-fought 64-58 victory over the Swarthmore College men's basketball team on Tuesday evening.
Freshman Will Gates finished with a game-high 15 points - 11 of which came in the second half - while Ryan Carmichael scored 14 points to lead Swarthmore (2-11, 1-5), which stayed with the Blue Jays until the final buzzer but were once again done-in by poor shooting (35 percent) from the field.
The Garnet - who were looking to defeat the Blue Jays (6-6, 2-3) for the first time since 2004 - played JHU even for the opening minutes of play, as a three-pointer from Carmichael got Swat within one at 12-11 with13:41 left in the first half. Behind seven first-half points from Pat O'Connell, Hopkins would built the lead to as much seven in the first half, but a lay-up from Gates with 1:03 remaining in the first half cut the lead to 29-24 heading into the half.
It looked as if the Blue Jays would run away with the game early in the second half, as a free throw from Hopkins' Danny Gergen gave the Blue Jays their biggest lead at 38-28 with 14:59 remaining in the second half.
But the resilient Garnet fought back - responding with a 12-2 run to tie the game. Back-to-back three-pointers from Danny Walker and Carmichael made it a 40-40 game with 11:03 left in the game. Swat finished 6-of-16 from behind the arc.
With game knotted 40-40, the Blue Jays offense came back to life and took control of the game for good. Hopkins responded with a 14-4 run over the game's next nine minutes to put the game out of reach. O'Conner's fastbreak lay-up with 1:55 brought the Blue Jay lead back to 10 points. Swarthmore out-scored Hopkins 9-6 in the final minute of play, but it was too little, too late as JHU held on for the 64-58 win.
The Blue Jays sealed the game down the stretch by hitting 10-of-12 free throws in the final two minutes of the contest.
Freshman Jordan Martinez scored nine points for Swat - going 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
The Garnet finished with 18-7 edge in second-chance points, but the Jays finished with 30-22 advantage in points in the paint.
The efficient Jays finished the game shooting 47 percent from the field.
Swarthmore returns home on Thursday to battle Dickinson. Action is slated to begin at 7:00 from Tarble Pavilion.
