SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Junior goalie Katie Ashmore made nine saves while facing pressure all game long, but three second-half goals by Elizabethtown proved to be the difference as the Blue Jays earned a 3-0 victory over the Garnet (2-3, 1-0) on Tuesday afternoon from Clothier Field Stadium.
ST. DAVIDS, Pa. – Freshman Kate Teleky scored for the second consecutive game while senior goalie Gina Grubb recorded 14 saves, but it was not enough as the Swarthmore field hockey team (2-2, 1-0) was defeated by Eastern 3-1 on Saturday afternoon from St. Davids.
BRYN MAWR, Pa. – Junior Sara McCabe and freshman Kate Teleky each scored two goals as the Swarthmore College field hockey team (2-1, 1-0) opened up Centennial Conference play with a commanding 7-1 victory over rival Bryn Mawr. Junior captain Sophia Ferguson, junior Devon Novotnak and freshman Catie Meador each tallied a goal and assist for the Garnet. The victory is Swarthmore’s largest since defeating the College of Notre Dame (Md.) 11-0 back on September 9, 2006.
Freshman Catie Meador scored the first goal of her career in the second minute of play, but visiting Widener responded with three second-half goals, as the Garnet fell to the Pride 4-1 on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field. Meador’s goal from the left of the circle – assisted by junior Sara McCabe – put the Garnet on top 1-0 just 70 seconds into the game. But the Garnet’s offensive attack couldn’t get much going the rest of the contest, managing only three more shots on goal.
