Pride Tops Field Hockey 4-1 in Inaugural 320 Challenge Contest
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Freshman Catie Meador scored the first goal of her career in the second minute of play, but visiting Widener responded with three second-half goals, as the Garnet fell to the Pride 4-1 on Saturday afternoon from Clothier Field.
Meador’s goal from the left of the circle – assisted by junior Sara McCabe – put the Garnet on top 1-0 just 70 seconds into the game. But the Garnet’s offensive attack couldn’t get much going the rest of the contest, managing only three more shots on goal.
Widener tied the game in the 12th minute when Colleen Cormier slipped the ball past the keeper from the front of the cage , tying the game 1-1.
The Pride put the game away with a 3-goal-blitz over an eight-minute span midway through the second half, scoring goals in the 42nd, 49th, 50th minutes, extending the score to 4-1.
In goal for the Garnet, senior captain Gina Grubb recorded fours saves.
The Garnet return to action on Thursday, September 10, when it travels to nearby Bryn Mawr.
Note: The contest marks the official beginning of the “320 Challenge” between Widener and Swarthmore.
