Richard Stockton Hands No. 1 Garnet Men First Defeat, 2-1 (2OT)

BOX SCORE

POMONA, N.J. - Richard Stockton's Kyle Evans scored the game-winning goal in the 102nd minute as the homestanding Ospreys upset the No. 1 Swarthmore College men's soccer team 2-1 (2OT) on Wednesday evening from South Jersey.

Senior Morgan Langley scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season in 59th minute with an assist from junior Micah Rose to give the Garnet (11-1-2, 4-0-2) the 1-0 second-half lead, only to see Stockton to tie the game in 65th minute with a goal from Brian Thomsen.

Langley gave Swat the lead in the 59th minute.

The loss is Swarthmore's first of the 2010 season and comes just one day after the Garnet reached No. 1 in the national rankings for the first time in program history.

With scored tied 1-1 after regulation, the Garnet headed to its second-consecutive overtime contest. Following a scoreless first overtime period, Stockton netted the game-winner as Evans took a long pass from teammate Brennen Fitzsimmons and scored on a left-footed shot to give the Ospreys (11-4-1) the upset win.

Swarthmore held significant advantages in shots (26-14) and shots-on-goalĀ  (10-7) and appeared to be on its way to yet another victory after taking the lead in the second half.

Following a scoreless first half and coming off a 0-0 tie in its last game against Franklin & Marshall, the Garnet offense finally got back in sync thanks to its top two offensive weapons - Langley and junior Micah Rose.

Langley scored his team-leading ninth goal of the season when he corralled a rebounded shot by Rose off the hands of the Stockton goalkeeper and blasted the ball into the back of the net, giving Swarthmore the 1-0 lead with 30 minutes to play.

But just when it seemed as if the Garnet would pull away with the contest as it has all season, the Ospreys answered right back. Thomsen scored on a header in front of the net after a double assist, knotting the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute.

Between the pipes, junior David D'Annunzio made five saves for the Garnet. Tim Brett made nine saves for Richard Stockton.

The loss marks the first time the Garnet has lost a game in which it has led in the second half since 2006 (vs. Gettysburg).

Swarthmore will look to bounce back when it hosts McDaniel on Saturday during Garnet Homecoming. Action is slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
