No. 3 Ursinus Blanks Field Hockey
COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - Trying to make good on its quest for a 2010 Centennial Conference playoff spot, the Swarthmore Garnet field hockey team (6-9, 3-4) was unable to combat the prolific offensive outpouring showcased by the first-place No. 3 Ursinus Bears (13-1, 8-0) as the Garnet fell, 11-0, on Wednesday evening.
Ursinus had its way with the Garnet all night, building a 7-0 lead before Swarthmore took its first shot, a 31st minute blocked attempt by senior Devon Novatnak. Bears sophomore Alyssa Thren scored three times in the first 12 minutes of play, leading the Ursinus onslaught.
For Swarthmore, freshman Nia Jones placed three shots on goal while sophomore Sophia Agathis had two get to the cage.
In goal for the Garnet, senior Katie Ashmore and freshman Gabriella Capone split time, with Ashmore making six saves and Capone recording the first six saves of her collegiate career.
Swarthmore will try to right the ship on Saturday, as the team will take on Conference opponent Gettysburg for Senior Day and Garnet Homecoming Weekend. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m.
