No. 2/3 Garnet Men Battle Gettysburg to 1-1 Tie

BOX SCORE

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - A goal from senior Morgan Langley in the 70th minute helped the No. 2/3 Swarthmore College men's soccer team (9-0-1, 3-0-1) erase a second-half deficit as the Garnet fought upset-minded Gettysburg(2-6-1) to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon from Clark Field.

An assist from Newman set up Langley's game-tying goal.

Junior goalkeeper David D'Annunzio made a season-high six saves for the Garnet, who found themselves in unfamiliar territory when trailing the Bullets 1-0 in the second half. The Bullets got on the board in the 65th minute thanks to sophomore Dan McNamara’s first goal of the season, which was set up off a corner kick that was initially saved by D'Annunizio, only for McNamara to scoop up the rebound and place the ball into the corner of the net, giving the Bullets the 1-0 edge.

But just when things looked the bleakest for a Garnet offense that struggled mighty in the first half - failing to put a single shot on goal and taking only two shots in the entire half - Langley came to the rescue. The senior scored his team-leading seventh goal season in the 70th minute off a free kick from sophomore Kieran Reichart  - whose ball was then headed by senior Gage Newman  to an open Langley, who converted from close range to tie the game at 1-1, giving new life to Swarthmore.

From there, each team managed to get scoring chances, but great defensive play on each side would ultimately keep game scoreless through regulation and two overtime periods, as the Garnet and Bullets settled for the 1-1 tie.

Both goalkeepers spent the entire 110-minute game in goal, with D’Annunzio recording six saves and Gettyburg's Connor Darrell finishing with five.

Swarthmore hopes to get back in the win column when it plays host to Ursinus at Clothier Field next Saturday.  Gametime is set for 7 p.m.
