Colombo Scores Two, Ties Career Goals Record, as Garnet Women Dice Up McDaniel 4-0

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. -  Look out Madeline Fraser '94 -  Megan Colombo '11 is on your heels for a pair of program scoring records.

The Garnet senior scored two goals to move into a first-place tie with Fraser for the all-time program lead  (26) while freshmen Amber Famiglietti and Aly Passanante also found the back of the net as the Swarthmore College women's soccer team (4-4-2, 3-1) put on an offensive clinic, defeating McDaniel 4-0 on Saturday night from Clothier Field Stadium.

With her two goals, Colombo also moves just one point shy of Fraser for the all-time program lead in career points (65).

Colombo scored in the 20th and 69th minutes for the Garnet.

Swarthmore's offense was humming all night, scoring fours goals in a game for the first time since a 4-0 season-opening win over Baptist Bible. With crisp passes and on-target shooting - which included putting 14 of 23 shots on goal - the Garnet offense played one of it most efficient games of the season.

The Garnet goals came in pairs, with goals in the first half coming two minutes apart and separated by five minutes in the second.

Colombo got the scoring started  in the 20th minute, as she took an excellent through ball from the midfield by Hannah Purkey, juked a defender on the right wing and bested the McDaniel keeper, giving Swat the 1-0 lead.

Just moments later, Famiglietti added to the Garnet lead, scoring her second goal of the season on a long-range blast over the head of McDaniel's  Jan Woolley, giving Swat a 2-0 edge.

The Garnet offense would create additional scoring chances later in the half - with Colombo and Purkey each recording shots on goal - but the score would remain 2-0 at the break.

In the second half, Swarthmore put the game away with a pair of goals over a five-minute span.  First it was Passanante in the 64th minute, as she scored her third goal of the season after taking a header from senior Elizabeth Mills at the corner of the goal and converting, giving the Garnet a commanding 3-0 lead.

Then in the 69th minute, it was Colombo sealing it with her recording-tying goal, as she blasted a shot from well behind the box into the hands of McDaniel's Woolley. The powerful shot proved to be too much for Woolley to handle, as the ball popped out of her hands and into the goal, bringing the game to the 4-0 final.

In goal for the Garnet, three goalkeepers - junior Marie Mutryn, sophomore Beth Martin and freshman Kaitlyn Sipiora - combined to earn the shutout. Sipiora finished with the Garnet's only save for the game. Woolley finished with 10 saves for McDaniel.

The Swarthmore defense also played a big part in the shutout of the Green Terror, as a pair of would-be goals in the 18th minute were blocked by Garnet defenders giving up their body in front of the net.

Swarthmore returns to Centennial Conference action on Saturday when it hosts Bryn Mawr. Action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
