Garnet Win Big in Season Opener Handling Gwynedd-Mercy 7-1

BOX SCORE

SWARTHMORE, Pa. – Senior Morgan Langley (Honolulu, HI) and junior Roberto Contreras IV (Sugarland, TX) netted two goals apiece to lead the high powered Garnet (1-0-0) offense to a 7-1 season opening victory over Gwynedd-Mercy (0-1-1) on Saturday night from Clothier Field.

Morgan Langley led the Garnet offense with two goals and two assists.

Juniors David Sterngold (Muncy, PA) and Henry Ainley (San Jose, CA) added goals of their own, while Jack Momeyer (New York, NY) scored his first career goal in the win over the Griffins in the 13th Annual Garnet Alumni Classic.

The Garnet defense was highly effective and clogged the middle of the field for the majority of the afternoon, only allowing two shots over the entire course of the match.  Junior David D’Annunzio (Piedmont, CA) and sophomore Jake Tracy (Holliston, MA) combined to hold the Griffins to only one goal, which did not come until the 74th minute.

Morgan Langley and the Garnet offense came out firing, putting 2 of its first 3 shots in the back of the net within the first ten minutes.  The first goal of the season for the Garnet came in the 7th minute with a stellar put-in by Langley, assisted by junior Pierre Dyer (Bethesda, MD).  Langley would go on to get the assist on a goal by Sterngold in the 9th minute, followed by an unassisted goal by Contreras IV in the 24th minute.  Contreras would be assisted by Langley again in the 40th minute for the final goal of the first half, putting the Garnet ahead 4-0.

The Garnet kept their offensive attack going in the 2nd half, with Langley putting the ball into the back of the net for the second time in the 58th minute, making the score 5-0.

This goal would stand as the 22nd goal of his career and put Langley as the ninth all-time goal scorer in Swarthmore history.

Junior Henry Ainley connected on his first goal of the season in the 66th minute, doing so unassisted and extending the Garnet lead to 6-0.

The Griffins’ sole score of the night would come from the foot of junior Dan Schultz in the 74th minute, cutting the Garnet lead to 6-1.  Jack Momeyer would go on to put the final exclamation mark on the soccer action with a beautiful shot from the top of the box, assisted by senior Phillipe Celestin (Vancouver, WA) in the 85th minute, which would bring the game to its final score of 7-1.

Overall, the Garnet were in complete control of every characteristic of the game, shooting an impressive 41 times in comparison to the Griffins’ 2 (23-1 SOG).

Swarthmore will be competing again tomorrow with a match against the Immaculata Mighty Macs at 3:00 PM.  A live video stream of the contest will be available on the Garnet Sports Network with play-by-play commentary by sophomore Victor Brady.
