Garnet Softball Falls Short in Conference Championship Round, Lose to Dickinson 3-1

BOX SCORE

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - After two days of Centennial Conference softball, Swarthmore's championship run would come to an end with a hard fought 3-1 loss to the Dickinson Red Devils in the championship round.  Swat's second place finish equals the program's best showing in the tournament.

The win gave Dickinson its first ever Centennial Conference championship.

The Red Devils jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning after three consecutive hits including a two-RBI single.

Dickinson would threaten again in the second, loading the bases but senior Kathryn Riley would stop the threat with a strikeout and groundout to end the inning.

It was a pitching dual for the rest of the game as Riley would only allow one more hit in the next five innings and strike out seven batters.  Dickinson's ace Allison Jordan would only allow three hits and would fan six batters.

Swat would try to rally back in the sixth inning after freshman Kate Smayda would get the offense going with a single and a stolen base.  Junior Krista Scheirer would knock in Smayda with a double to center field.

The Devils would end the Garnet rally with a strikeout to end the inning and would hold Swat in the seventh to seal the victory.

Riley threw as well as she could have in the tournament, pitching 27 inning for the Garnet while picking up 23 strikeouts and her fourth no-hitter.

The Garnet finish the season at 20-22.
