Givans Goes for Gold as Swat Concludes Centennial Conference Track & Field Championships
SWARTHMORE, Pa. - Sophomore Kenyetta Givans captured gold in the women's 100 meter hurdles with a school-best time of 15.05 to lead the host Swarthmore College track & field teams on the final day of the 2010 Centennial Conference Track & Field Championships.
Givans joins the Swat women's 4x800 relay team as the Garnet's gold medal winners at the 2010 championships. The super sophomore also finished fourth in the women's 100 meter dash.
Sophomore picked up a medal for the Swat women for the second consecutive year, earning a bronze in the women's high jump, clearing 4-10.50.
In the women's 4x400 relay - the final event of the Championships - the Garnet took fifth with a time of 4:02.64.
Swat also picked up points in the women's 400 meter dash, as freshman Mariam Vonderheide finished seventh ( 1:11.84), followed in eighth by teammate Mariel Feigen (1:12.35)
Two days removed from breaking the school pole vault record, freshman Hana Lehmann finished sixth in the women's triple jump with a jump of 32-06.50, tying a personal best.
In the women's shot put, Ogechi Irondi took sixth with a toss of 36-00.00, good for the fourth best toss in College history.
Overall, the Garnet finished in the eighth place with a total of 46 points.
On the men's side, junior Chris Mayer-Bacon led the way for the Garnet, taking fifth in the men's 400 meter hurdles (57.57) and sixth in the men's 110 meter hurdles (16.50), with both times making the Swat Top 10 list.
Sophomore Daniel Ly - a medalist on Saturday - finished fifth in the men's triple jump
(43-09.75) with a new personal-best jump, ranking fifth on the College's all-time list.
Freshman Jacob Phillips made an impressive championship debut in the men' s 5,000 meter run, coming in 14th with a time of 16:02.57.
As a team, the Garnet finished in eighth place with 22 points.
Outsdie of Swat, a pair of first-time champions highlighted the final day of the 2010 Centennial Conference Track & Field Championships, as the Dickinson College men's track & field team and the Johns Hopkins women's track & field team were both crowned team champions on Sunday afternoon.
The Red Devils finished with a total of 172 points, besting defending-champion Haverford (142) for the men's title - ending the Fords'16-year reign as Centennial Conference champion in the process. The Blue Jays concluded the weekend with 190 points, narrowly edging defending champion Haverford (185).
Dickinson's Nick Karwoski (track) and John Bingham (field) were named the men's outstanding performers for the meet. Karwoski won the men's 10,000 meter run, 3,000 meter steeplechase and 5,000 meter run, while Bingham captured gold in the decathlon and javelin.
For the women, Johns Hopkins Laura Paulsen was the Most Outstanding Track Performer, while Muhlenberg's Alexandra Faust the Most Outstanding Field Performer. Paulsen took first in the 10,000, 5,000 and 1,500 and meter runs, while Faust was first in the pole vault - breaking the Conference, meet and venue records - and 200 and 400 meter dashes.
The champion Red Devils picked up four first-place finishes on the final day to win the crown. Bingham won the javelin with meet-record and NCAA-provisional throw of 198-07. In shot put, Anthony Abbate won gold with an NCAA-provisional throw of 51-01.00. In the men's 400, Sean Denson repeated as champion, crossing the finish line in a time of 48.98. Finally, the 4x400 team took first with a time of 3:20.99.
Tim Schoch led second-place Haverford's effort,winning gold in both the men's 1,500 run (3:57.56)and repeating as champion in the 800 meter run (1:53.55)
Muhlenberg captured third place on the men's side, led by gold-medal performances from Peter Rice in the men's 200 (22.37) as well as a first-place finish in the 4x100 (42.38)
Chris Rountree was a double winner for fourth-place Ursinus, winning both the men's 100 meter dash (11.06) and men's 110 meter hurdles (15.00). Also for Ursinus, Travis Youngs captured gold in the triple jump (45-08.50).
Gettysburg's Greg Minnick won the high jump with a jump of 6-06.75.
Franklin & Marshall's Nils Michaelis won gold in the men's 400 meter dash 55.83.
On the women's side, Paulsen's two golds in the 1,500 (4:38.11 - NCAA provisional) and 5,000 (17:58.30) led the way for the Blue Jays. Amelia Vallenilla also earned a first-place finish for Johns Hopkins, taking the women's 100 with a time of 12.78.h
Second-place Haverford won five gold medals on the day. Jackie Freund won the shot put with a throw of 40-07.50 to earn her second gold of the Championships. Mara Miller won the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:05.27. T.J. Lipinski won the triple jump with a leap of 35-10.50. Ana Schall won the javelin with a throw of 119-09. Finally, the Fords' 4x100 team took gold with a time of 48.70.
Franklin & Marshall's Sheena Crawley won the 800 meter dash with a meet-record time of 2:12.60. The Diplomats also captured the 4x400 (3:53.74) with an NCAA provisional time.
Faust took the title in the 200 (25.30) and 400 (56.33) to highlight her outstanding weekend while beating the venue record in the 400.
In high jump, Gettysburg's Laura Olson was first, clearing 5-00.50.
