Swat Softball Split with Gettysburg

SWARTHMORE, Pa. - The Swarthmore College softball team (9-15, 2-4 CC) split a doubleheader with the Gettysburg Bullets (12-9-1, 4-2 CC) on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 3-2 but losing game two in a 10 inning heartbreaker 7-4 on Clothier Field.

Game 1

Riley thew 17 strong innings and struck out 14 batters in the two games.

Freshman Danielle Seltzer hit a two-run homerun to center field in the bottom of the first inning to put the Garnet on top early in game one.  Seltzer went one-for-two with two RBIs in the game.

It was a pitcher's dual for between senior pitcher Kathryn Riley and Beth McCullough with only eight hits in the game.  Riley would strike out six in the game while McCullough would sit down 12 Garnet batters and allow only three hits.

In the fourth inning Gettysburg's Adrien Rahs would tie the game up with a two-run shot over the left field fence.  Swat would answer in the bottom half of the inning with a run thanks to an error by the Bullet's third baseman.

Swat would hold off the Bullet offense in the final three innings to pick up its second Conference win of the season.

Game 2

The Bullets would strike first in game two with a big two-run first inning off of three hits and two Garnet errors.  Gettysburg would add another run in the third inning to extend its lead to three.

In the bottom of the third Swarthmore would begin its comeback with a two out rally that would began with junior Kira Kern walking followed by a Gettysburg error landing Riley at second base and Kern at third.  Seltzer would come up big for the Garnet once again with a single up the middle plating Kern and Riley to put Swat within one of the Bullets.

Swarthmore would score the equalizer in the fourth with a double from junior Krista Scheirer,  single from senior Michele Perch and capped off  by an RBI single off the bat of Kate Smayda.

Neither team would be able to add more runs to the scoreboard in seven innings with Riley on the mound again for the Garnet and ace Lanie Parr on the mound for the Bullets.  Riley threw another amazing game for the Garnet, sitting down eight batters and allowing only two earned runs in the game.

Parr would strike out 11 Garnet batters an allow four earned runs.

After nine innings of play and still no decision, the game would move on to the 10th inning and the international tie-breaker would go into effect.  The Bullets would score four runs in the top of the inning with three hits and a Swarthmore error to go up 7-4.

Swat would score a run in the 10th but couldn't generate enough offense to start another comeback.

Seltzer went three-for-five with two RBIs in game two to give her four hits and four RBIs on the day.

The Garnet softball team return to the diamond on Tuesday April 6 when they travel to Muhlenberg College.  Action starts at 3 PM.
